The Link!

So we are doing our best to deliver a vision of grand global colonial warfare retelling the story of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space. We imagined the next generation of immigrants moving out to the new frontier of an inhabitable planet. Rather than taking a traditional sci-fi approach to that we wanted to look at how that would happen practically, what the ships would look like and with machines that were designed for excavation and construction , demolition and working the land, and what happens when they are turned into instruments of war.

I'm curious if they'll keep the bots in the multiplayer though and how the campaign will link to.

Agreed, I'm hoping they have something to keep me playing it this time around because as much as I loved it I stopped playing it pretty quickly. It's still fun for a quick blast but it doesn't have that longevity to it which is a shame.

Great news. The lack of campaign is why I skipped the first one. I'm not much of a MP guy.

I don't think shallow is the right term.. That usually meant it has very simplistic gameplay with out much complexity.. It was bare bones in content I think would be a better description.

And that's a positive? The original game should've had one. If it did, this article wouldn't have been written and there would be nothing to say about Titanfall 2...

Here's a plan. In the next Destiny game, there will be 10 minutes of actual gameplay. In Destiny 3, there will be hours of gameplay!!! What an achievement. IGN/GS shouldn't forget about the amazing fact that Destiny 3, a video game with hours of gameplay. Wowzorz.

Guaranteed to be shitty tack-ons, like Starhawk or CoD sp campaigns.

I'm interested in a Titanfall campaign. The first game would have been a whole lot better with one.

Titanfall is probably my favorite shooter of the this generation. If a campaign will bring more players then so be it. Gamers will be pissed they passed on this gem.

The first one had rock-solid gameplay, but there was no meat on the bones. I think they had a great concept, though. I ADD'ed out on Infamous SS and never really picked it back up again. If they can address the content and make different game types more appealing for a rotation, I could see 2 holding my attention. Definitely helps to have a campaign.

I thought Danny O'Dwyer explained Titanfall lasting appeal issues, simply put you pretty easily unlock everything early and have nothing to work towards after a while. Only thing there was to grind was prestige.

Cool, loved the first one. Development of the multiplayer should be easier considering they can build upon the foundation laid out by the first game, so this gives them more time for the single player campaign which they have to do from scratch. I wonder if the campaign will have coop or not, that is my main curiosity at this point.

Nice addition to flesh out the lore and atmosphere they created. Titanfall stood out because of the gameplay, the movement, the way you traverse in the game. Once you play it, any shooter after it just feels slow. That's what made the game really good. Titanfall is still a must-play game. I think it's still one of the best shooters that came out so far this gen. I prefer single player games but Titanfall's multiplayer is very welcoming and is very enjoyable. I think they just wanted to get the multiplayer and gameplay right first and foremost, which they succeeded. I guess this time they have more time to develop a story so hopefully it won't be tacked on. But I think even if the story end up being not that good, hopefully the gameplay is still familiar so those who skipped the first one will finally know how great Titanfall is.

The first one had a horrible campaign. You were supposed to pay attention to events in tiny windows on your screen whilst trying to play an online match, lol. Nobody ever saw those videos.

But I really did like the setting in Titanfall and thought it would be fit for a campaign. So I've long wanted one. However, that has faded over time. I'm kind of over AAA shooters, futuristic settings and short campaigns in FPS.

I'm sorry but if that's the case you simply made a game not worth playing.

Guess I will stick to Doom and Shadow warrior 2 for my FPS SP fix.

I'm just hoping Titanfall 2 adds more Titans this time around. In the last one, I pretty much just use the Atlas through out the game for the most parts, Atlas was the best titan in the game, but it got boring using the same old titan with barely customization which by the way needs way more titan customization and yes, a true single player as well.

@Zero_epyon: Titanfall has potential to be a good single-player FPS - but Respawn's lead developers worked on Call of Duty and that leaves me a bit skeptical.

The COD series went downhill, that's for sure.

But the first couple of CODs had amazing campaigns. Up until World At War I would say, after that it became lackluster and always ended with QTE boss fights, how utterly lame.

People need to come to terms with the fact that not every shooter needs a single player campaign, and the whole notion of "no SP = no buy" is completely ridiculous because MP-only shooters have been around for nearly two decades now. Counter-Strike and Battlefield 2 have no campaigns and they were much better off for it, and a lot of the campaigns to these kinds of shooters rarely rise above feeling like an afterthought.

In other words, I hope they're making this campaign because they actually want to, and not because they're trying to cater to a group of people who want a single-player shoehorned into every shooter.

My fucks given are non-existent in that regard.

I want Titanfall to be a better multiplayer game. Not just in terms of content, but maybe more to the skill ceiling of that game as well. The map designs need to be a bit more crazy, they can do so much more with the mechs. The first game is a good multiplayer game (7/10 type game), but you throw in how little there was to the mp, and how little there was to the skill ceiling and it slowed down quick. Though I can still get into attrition matches on PC today.

Also please get rid of the stupid aim assist for gamepads on PC, k thanks.

Not just for shooters, and it's not why people play them, it's about why people keep playing them; it's behavioral science, mainly dealing with reward ratios and scheduled reinforcement. The video I talked about form The Point, Destiny: The Hardcore Gamer's Slot Machine, it brought up an article written in Gamasutra called Behavioral Game Design that discusses reward ratios and schedules reinforcement effects a continued and engaged interest in games. Titanfall was a pretty awesome game worth playing, however it lacks reason for gamers to keep playing after a while. Whereas games like the COD games have a plethora of guns and modifications other things to unlock through a contingency ratio of experience. Variable reward schedules like those found in Destiny tend to be the most engaging with players, which is why games like grindy RPGs are like MMOs with random loot and rewards tend to be super addictive on top of their contingency rewards ratios (I.e. the expected rewards one can expect from certain actions, like knowing killing certain enemies gets you certain XP). Of course, such manipulative tricks still need good game with which to hide. Most of these games that are addictive are at their core good games, so no having these manipulative tricks isn't the first and foremost thing to make them good, it's the trick to keep them engaged and to keep coming back.

I remember games like Day of Defeat, Counter Strike, RTCW and Enemy Territory having long lasting communities.

These games were never about unlocking any stuff. But I get what you are saying. I heard so many people say: "Ugh, Titanfall should have more weapons" "Lol, look at how little there is to unlock in Battlefront"

It even goes so far that the most basic stuff to support your team in Battlefield (healing packs and defib) are locked behind an unlock. I get this is what today's online FPS player wants. It's not what makes a good game to me though.

Titanfall's main problem was dividing its already small community with DLC and the new game modes taking a very long time to get into the game, while other game modes were simply taken out. It was just very bad design choices by Respawn.

@R4gn4r0k: yeah, I know what you mean, I remember being addicted to games like Counter-Strike for a long time, the only reward then was the euphoric response good win from good teamwork, good competition. In many ways though these games of today aren't for those that don't put in the time to be good or to work toward that competitive edge through strong familiarity with games. In this modern mutation of games toward progression it ensures that even a modestly skilled player can achieve some level of reward from engaging with it, which doesn't just benefit the individual but actually has the benefit of helping grow the gaming communities. Plus, back when I was into Counter-Strike, that was a day when I only needed to go out and find a decent online game to play once in a blue moon, and those who played the online portions of games tended to just be those people who were really interested in such games. Now it seems like every game has an MP feature that attracts a lot of causal players, many who I imagine don't want to put in that kind of dedication that makes it like super competitive Counter-Strike. And that's fine by me, I like a nice competitive game sometimes and other times I like to sit back and enjoy it like it's just another game of GoldenEye 64 with me and my boys back in the day. These games despite their casual appeal can often still appeal to a competitive league of gamers. Titanfall is no different, I'd even imagine given its responsive design and solid mechanics that this game is very well suited for competitive style gaming.

Anyhow, I wouldn't know about any player issues from launch, I got my Xbox One in late 2014 when the Definitive Edition for Titanfall and all it's DLC went for like $12.50 or something like that. I liked what was there though.

It was a different situation on PC and Xbox One. The PC community started dying faster because it was smaller and as I said: Respawn started cutting game modes.

"the only reward then was the euphoric response good win from good teamwork, good competition."

And that is still what I look for in an online FPS. A kill should feel good because you are better/more skilled/faster than another player. Not because you get "+50XP". In fact I hate that screen pop up. It won't let me focus on the battle at hand. It's all about individual gain, not helping out your team.

I've had joy from unlocks and perks and whatever. But it all just feels so shallow now. I like to play Insurgency these days. Two sides, each with their own weapon set... reminds me a lot of the good old days. No XP, no unlocks. Just you, your weapon and your team.

Titanfall is probably my favorite shooter of the this generation. If a campaign will bring more players then so be it. Gamers will be pissed they passed on this gem.

Titanfall didn't even need a singleplayer to succeed imo.. It was just the fact that the multiplayer, though good, was extremely barebones.. With limited maps, modes, really no competitive play/match making.. If you want a only online fps to succeed, you have to go a moba model with constant updates and strides to competitive play.

The first and SO were most fun games I played in 2014, so if they can make more fun with T2 I'm good with it.
