Can Joel and Ellie's relationship survive?

For those unwilling to click the link, here are the main points:

Here are some alternatives that could also be interesting for the sequel:

  • Same universe, but characters that we've never met before on a very different journey.
  • Charting the birth of the fireflies and how Marlene came to lead them.
  • Following one of the other characters in The Last of Us, such as Bill or Tommy.
  • Exploring the 20 year gap between the death of Joel's daughter and before he met Ellie.
In my opinion, the 20 year gap sounds like the most interesting option to me. We get to see exactly how the quarantine zones came alive and I was especially interested in what happened to 'Ish" in the sewers.
If they did continue with Joel and Ellie, no way their relationship survives. I'd hate Joel if I was Ellie and found out what he did.

So Fear the Walking Dead for Last Of Us?

Could work. Will most likely get it day 1 regardless.

Yeah sure why not. TWD is great.

Although my comparison had more to do with the article stating that TLOU2 will be in the same universe and timeline as TLOU but from a different perspective, similar to how FTWD is to TWD.

Day 1. Although, I'd wish they would do a prequel showing how... (SPOILERS): Joel survived in a period set after his daughter died/ before he met Ellie. AKA.. what happened during those 20 years.

Some games just don't need sequels but if Sony are going to try and get NG to turn TLOU into a franchise as they need something because Uncharted 4 is the last one and they don't have anything else, well go ahead then and let's see what they do

I agree. I found myself wondering how Joel is such a badass at fighting when pulling off some of the more elaborate moves.

there is a game that would probably be better left without a sequel.

a new story in the same universe? perhaps.

but using ellie and joel again, I cant see it as a good idea.

Joel and Ellie if used should be Non playable. Using them again would ruin the magic of that ending.

Fear the Walking Dead is pretty good, so it could work the same way for TLOU2 and The Walking Dead was as close to a TLOU t.v series as you can get. Plus Joel was also in a group of people who ambush innocence people since he mention this to Ellie and I like to see what made Joel kill civilians and also how Bill/Joel come to be cool friends.

I really want a Last of Us 2, but I also don't want it to follow Ellie and Joel. Their story is told, and it's told well. Time to move on.

Give me new characters set in the same world. Heck, why even confine yourself just to America? Show us how other parts of the world are dealing with the outbreak. I'd love a Last of Us 2 in London.

Please no story continuation.

I hate it when perfectly finished stories get a weak continuation because of the success and need/want for a sequel.

I'm perfectly fine with TLOU2. But please no Joel and Ellie.

The Last Of Us 2 set in London may be too similar to one in America I think. Set in an Asian country like Japan would really be different. There need to be more settings in the East. Many people missed the gem that was 'Sleeping Dogs' because it's set in the East.

When I first played through The Last of Us, I was dead set on thinking that we should not see a sequel with Joel and Ellie.

I'm playing through the Remastered version currently and I had the thought again about a sequel. Now I'd love to see a sequel with Joel and Ellie.

I'm in the minority on this one, but it could be huge to see what happens to them next. Their story in The Last of Us finished and tied up nicely, they did not. They still are together, traveling, with a newfound thought of distrust within Ellie. I love obscure endings and I'm not saying I want a sequel for clarification, but there is so much more story that can be told with them. So much more drama between them and their journey. We've seen one game with them, but that's only one chapter in their lives.

If we were to get a game with them again, I'd be pumped. If we were to get a sequel, then that's okay too and I'll still be excited. I just know I don't care to see a prequel with the Fireflies, the stations, or Joel's life in those 20 years. Continue and grow things, don't try to force the story in the cracks like so many things are trying to do.

I don't see why we can't get a sequel with an older Joel and Ellie. And Ellie eventually finding out about Joel's lie.

The Last of Us was a great game. They need to fix the AI and build upon the gameplay of the original, which had way better gameplay than cover based shooting and scripted events of Uncharted.

I think they should do one another 10 years into the future where everyone has forgotten what society is and people group together and fight in arenas where two men enter and one man leaves...

I also don't want a direct sequel to Joel and Ellie. The ending's great the way it is. They should just be referenced or talked about in a journal in the following games.

I do like the idea of a different perspective with a new character in another part of the world like World War Z. Or maybe playing as one of the fireflies.

I would love to see Ellie again...not so much Joel, not because i disliked him as a character, but i think it would be cool to see Ellie several years after the first game now all grown up.

More than anything, I'd want the same tense gameplay and mechanics of The Last of Us in a more open ended setting and much less forced story. That would be ideal. I want them to really build on that game's encounter system.

When you put it like that, it's hard to disagree lol. In my events that unfold after the ending:

Joel becomes overprotective and Ellie eventually finds out that Joel lied to her and killed her mother-figure 'Marlene' (In a sense he becomes the antagonist)

Ellie ends up killing Joel whilst crying because she truly does love him but knows that he is toxic for her.

Because TLOU is a combination of some of the shittiest gameplay mechanics the "cinematic" genre has brought and to b honest when I am saying its worth a youtube watch I am being really generous because lets be honest, the story itself is incredibly predictable and all characters aside from Ellie are really bland.

An interesting pet idea I've entertained for a while, would be if The Last Of Us was an anthology series, the continuing thread being post apocalyptic and that instead of "Not Zombies", the next game would be about "Not Aliens". But from a human "realistic" perspective, just like Last of Us did.

I've had that thought in the back of my head ever since NaughtyDog consulted with NASA or whatever a year or two ago.

I think you're being too harsh. The gameplay mechanics actually forced me to have to play the game it was meant to be played. Every bullet counted and few games make you feel that way. If you didn't like the story then that's your opinion. I predicted a few of the parts myself but to say all characters were bland besides Ellie is just wrong.

No! pretty much any games, unless you talking about ISO games!
