...have you played Shattered Memories?

Like, seriously. Have you?

I finished watching some Gametrailers show and everyone there talked about how amazing Heavy Rain's mature storytelling is. Alan Wake is also mentioned yet a little game, released by a hype-free game developer, called Shattered Memories seems to have never happened.

What the hell is wrong with these idiots? From gamers i kinda understand, we cant buy every good game out there so we end up talking about what we can afford to play. But why is the game with one of the most surprisingly clever and engaging characters and narrative to come out this gen being COMPLETELY ignored by the press? And the few who talk about it seem to have given it no thought whatsoever.

You may love or completely hate what it has to offer as a SH game but the storytelling is more than worth mentioning, yet, it never is.

Its head and shoulders above your typical story-focused videogame, its cheap and its out on PSP, PS2 and Wii. I urge you to experience it (on Wii if possible) and look up some of the amazing theories floating around the internet.

It really is something rare; Videogame storytelling that doesnt treat gamers like dumb, mouthbreading teenagers. Something that keeps you thinking and realizing important things even after you finish it.

Maybe if they re-released it on the PS360, the terrible dedicated-press gaming is stuck with would have given it half the attention it deserves.

Such a shame.

Well definetly the fact that everything else in the game failed in people' s eyes don' t help. In order for a story based game to be fully realized everything, even gameplay has to be good. Look at Alpha Protocol it has a great story that definetly changes with each choice however since the game was sub par most people would prefer to ignore the game, story included.

I don't consider Heavy Rain the epitome, but I did very much like the story despite the flaws. That being said, I would easily say Shattered Memories had a better story by and far, if not one of the best stories in recent memory (erm, no pun intended I guess). What bugs me more is people that complain Shattered Memories isn't a true Silent Hill game. I fail to see how that is, considering it perfects the concept of what Silent Hill is supposed be better than any game in the series since Silent Hill 2 :| But uh, thats a different subject entirely. But yes, the story in Shattered Memories, is simple on the surface, but presents a deep and actually meaningful message. I like it. A lot.

I generally find the gaming "press" to be idiots anyway... GS editors excepted of course, love you guys ;) Haven't played Silent Hill yet, must do shortly. Too many 360 games to be playing tho...

People's eyes? um, its a 7.9 in Metacritic and an 8.0 game in GS. And dont talk about gameplay affecting how people see the story when Heavy Rain gets compared to a David Fincher movie. Gameplay is great too, btw.

Theres a big, yet still subtle difference between good story, storytelling, dialogue, and to a lesser extent voice acting.

I'd argue something like Dragon Age has a very mediocre story, but great storytelling. The Witcher i think has a great story, but not the best storytelling. As for the moment, im playing Starcraft 2 and i havent gone enough of its story and story telling to judge, but is got great dialogue.

Can you seperate Silent Hill's story from its story telling? From what i've seen its story telling isnt so great, though it has a great story.

It's a really badass game, for sure. There were two moments where I just exploded on how awesome the game was: The car scene; (You know which one I'm talking about!) and the plot twist. Gametrailers had a segment of one of their podcast about it saying how awesome it is, but they haven't talked about it sense, which is a slightly annoying. I haven't played Heavy Rain or Alan Wake yet, but I can already tell that SH:SM holds up extremely well, at least story wise.

I've been wanting to get that ever since I heard Zero Punctations review on it. Wish they released a Silent Hill collection or something, or I'll just have to go back and buy a PS2 one day to play it.

Shattered Memories has both. It also has (IMO) some of the most convincing voice-acting performances this gen. The fact that the dialogue is great also helps.

I should really try shattered memories out.

Heavy rains story and storytelling are poor, plotholes everywhere, leaps of logic that make no sense, terrible voice acting. We have seen it in movies everywhere done 100 times better.

Alan Wake has much a much more fleshed out and unique story.

You should definitely look up some of the interpretations SH fanatics had of SM's ambiguous story. Read GAF's official thread. I was shocked with some of them.

Yeah, I'm just saying involving why people bought the game. Scott Shelby character is really stupid, but damn he's one of the most badass characters this year.

I thought it was a good game, but had some serious plotholes and annoying story elements. It was just not your typical game so I liked it. As for Shattered Memories, I have been wanting to try it, just not for 50 bones.

Don´t get me wrong,I enjoyed HR a lot,but as you very well stated some plotholes were unacceptable and the some storytelling decisions were pretty poor as well. I honestly enjoyed Fahrenheit more, even with those nonsensical final chapters it has.

I also don't recall me accusing you of ever calling it a bad game or calling the story terrible, but I just found it funny you would ask people here if they've played SM when you are self haven't even played the game you're comparing it to.

Considering HR has multiple endings and such, I'm curious as to whichvids on youtube you watched or read up on that helped you "know the story" ... or maybe you're going to give me the infamous "I played it at a friends house"?
