But games have to be controlled, and if the new method used to control them doesn't improve anything over current controllers, why shouldn't I call it a gimmick?

I missed the part where I said you can't call things a gimmick, and I'm sorry if I implied that. I do see where you're coming from when it comes to the Wii U's controller. I too am skeptical, but I think Nintendo has the resources and power to make it work.
Then again, I dislike judging hardware before I even get hands-on time with it. When it comes to next-gen systems, especially since gaming is so mainstream now, it's difficult to say how exactly this controller will effect the industry, if at all.
I admit I may be prematurely judging the Wii U. And who knows, maybe I'll end up liking it more than Sony or Microsoft's next gen offerings. But for the time being, I remain skeptical. Sorry if I seemed overly-aggressive, I got a little caught up in the discussion.
Eh? You have nothing to apologize for.. Nintendo fans are quick to get on their knees for the company they worship, and most of them will openly admit to it. Thing is, when it comes to next generation console hardware, I immediately look at Nintendo's first because they always have the most interesting things going for them.
I'll admit that the Wii has it's faults, but I don't think what it carried under it's hood was the issue. The Wii definitely suffered from lack of third party support, and I'll be the first to admit that. However, the Wii was a fantastic console and probably the most overlooked by critics and consumers alike.
