1. Super Mario Galaxy - Gorgeous orchestral soundtrack accompanies some of the most inspired visuals a gamer could hope to observe, let alone actually get to play in. The platforming is incredible thanks to the gravity effects and level design. Every game has its legions of lovers and haters, and it's a true testament to the quality/sheer joy of mario galaxy that it seems to have satsified nearly everyone(seriously, is there anyone alive who can actually say "i don't like galaxy"). This game proves that colour is not a sin and that the most fresh experience can come from the most ancient ip.
2. Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess - The best zelda ever. Finally a return to the classic zelda formula, and it's incredible. By far the most epic and engaging zelda story yet combined with excellent cinematography and a beautiful artstyle that is dark yet still very stylized. Excellent dungeon design with some incredibly fun new items that actually can remain relevent. The varied locales - from icey peaks to deep forests - and tasks - wild west shooting, horseback fighting, canoing - make for an interesting quest that leaves you feeling like you really went through everything in order to prevail. The only thing that keeps it from hitting number one is that it is outdated even for wii standards(too much midi, no voice acting, poor textures). Not surprising given that this was actually developed as a gamecube game.
3. Gears of War - This was thee next gen game when it comes to the HD gaming experience. At it's time of release it had the most incredible detailed environments and characters on consoles by far. Not only were the visuals superb, but the sound was also fantastic(both the well fitted score and the incredible sound effects). Add in some of the most insane gore effects and you have an incredible satisfying game. All of this combined with the games 3rd person view and mechanics creates an extremely fresh and intense game.
These are the top three for sure imo. There are some other brilliant games this generation that have done great things(nintendogs and brain age have snared a wide variety of people, particularly the "non gamer", wh ile still being excellent games; rock band was a great step forward for the rythmn genre, orange box provides excellent value, professor layton mixes brainteasers with crazy adventure to great effect, and no more heroes provides such an intense and original experience) but ultimatly which deserve to be above another? it's rather difficult to pick out the best games when there are so many excellent games to choose from.
