1. High launch price

The PS3 originally launched with a price tag of $600 and $500 for a stripped down version. Sony can't afford to come out with yet another high priced console next generation.

2. Difficult Development

The PS3 has been the hardest and most expensive console on the market to develop for. While they have released new tools for developers to make things easier it still was a huge mistake on Sony's part.

3. Multiple console variations

20, 40, 60, 80, 120, 160, and 250 GB models of the PlayStation 3 have been released. This is just ridiculous they need to just stick to one version.

Oh yeah and a new controller design would be nice. While I like the dualshock controller it's over a 10 year old design and it's time for something new.

Console variation isn't a big deal.

The other points I agree with, especially the difficulty of developing for the system.

I disagree on two points. 1.) Multiple console variations hasnt hurt Sony this generation really. How can they not "afford" to be able to do that next gen? Honestly, havent the extra SKUs helped Sony to get by this generation? Like lower the price of 40 GB console, then "adding the value" of 80 GB, then now the new PS3 Slim. 2.) The Dualshock is a fine controller. I hope Sony keeps it.

By the end of this gen and going into the new gen they need to have backwards compatibility. Something that is going to be difficult if they don't use a version of the Cell once again.

By then PS3 might be $100-$150 though :P

They should also make sure their online service is fully integrated from the start, the same way Live is. If you think back to how poor it was at launch in comparison to how it is now, you'll know what I mean.

There ARE some things they got right that they should keep, though. The ability to upgrade the HDD yourself should remain, as should being able to use pretty much any headset, bluetooth OR USB. I also think they should keep it fairly open. I love that I can copy my media to the hard drive through an external HDD or flash drive. I can even copy stuff to and from my phone. Also online play should remain free, although I think Sony will charge for it next gen.

I agree with point's 1 and 2 completely. Multiple console variations isn't that big of a problem. All someone has to do is five minutes of research and then will figure out the different consoles. I also love the dualshock controller and have grown up with that so I hope they stick with that design.

Top4 pros.

1. HDD swapping

2. BR

3. Wifi

4. Free online

Top4 Cons.

1. Cell

2. Price

3. Controller

4. PSN

If they could fix the cons... Would be a great system. I just hope they keep the pros.

I agree with points 1 and 3.Nobody wants to pay a gazzilion dollars for a console. And having a million different consoles is a waste of money in my opinion. But its still too early to tell anything.I think Sony is looking at the mistakes they made with the ps3 and Im sure they will try to do things differently for the ps4.

Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Imagine if Sony decided to use that boomerang design, that would of been awful. That is why i say stick with the dualshock. It is a great controller and don't risk messing things up.

Well, if Sony was smart... They could keep the old controller and release a new version that rips off the 360 one... And have them both on the market. Who says you only need 1 version of a controller? There is not limit with console versions.

The only major mistake they made in my book (besides incredibly executive arrogance early on) was the absolutely ridiculous price point. Keep any new system at $400 or less at launch and you should be ok in my book.

From what I heard, people who handled the boomerang mockup said it was more form fitting to the hand and more comfortable. I would rather have comfort and weird looking than uncomfortable and normal looking.

Just from what it looked like I would think it would be uncomfortable, I guess I thought wrong. I don't find the Dualshock uncomfortable at all though.

They keep chopping and changing features though. Some are backwards compatible, some aren't. Some have wireless, some don't. Also varying amounts of USB ports, microcard slots, etc. It's probably standardised at this point but for the first couple of years it was constantly changing which just seemed silly.

Oh true point taken. They seem to have it leveled out as of late but now I see what your saying. Never really looked at it that way and now I look back and do notice how much they have changed. Still think the other points are more important but is something for Sony to look out for.

I'm a fan of the difficuly development cycle. I also think if PS3 did come out before 360 with a cheaper price tag - the numbers today would be different. Then again I could be wrong.

I am indeed a fan of the difficult development process though. Do you think SONY was like, OKAE WE GUNNZA PURPUSAELY MAEK DIZ CELL LIKE PWUPA ARD' TO DEWELUP FOR SO WE MAEK LEZZ MONIES!

It's just the combination of SO MANY mistakes - that made this a mistake. If they do everything right next gen, they could afford to take a risk with a similarly similar concept.

Most likely they will base it on the cell though, they might change somethings around like how it works and switch to the modern techniques - but this will mean carrying on knowledge from the PS3 dev cycle to PS4.

Who knows.

no backwards compatablilty / cutting of BS after one year because "our library is big enough" I know people still using a PS3 for GTA:San Andreas, and have known more people who WERE going to buy one, but didn't when they heard that the BC had been eliminated from the feature list.

i think the main thing is getting it out at a reasonable price, with a great launch lineup. the ps3 had neither of these things, besides resistance and heavenly sword it was lacking for a long time. if they do that then everything should work for them, and they could easily pull off a ps2 success story again.

When PS4 will come out it should be no more than $299. The only reason why PS3 didn't do so good this gen is the over the top price of $599 when it first came out.

I'll tell you one thing I want Sony to do: stop making such grandiose boasts. In fact, this goes out to every company. If you make a claim, I expect you to deliver on it...to the letter. The first company that claims their console will do every game at 1080p60 locked (and by that I mean the full 1920x1080 @ 60Hz progressive), I'm going to hold them to their word. Whatever happened to taking a company to task for false advertising, anyway?

I agree with most of your points. They should also lose the attitude they had with the PS3, "people will buy it even if it has no games", "people should get another job just to get a PS3", .......

Considering the cost of hardware (especially custom hardware) when it first comes out and economies of scale aren't in place, that's unlikely. Nintendo gets away with it by setting their bar almost embarrassing low, allowing them to use cheap parts.

1. Lower launch price

2. More games available at launch

3. New controller (not realy a mistake, but they NEED a new one) - Sorry, but it's about time to push the old Dualshock design aside and come up with something new Sony. I was looking forward to the "boomerang" for the PS3, but then they reverted back to the old style. :(

I actually prefer the Dualshock actually, and I've been playing with a 360 controller for almost 3 years. Added to your list, they better have BC mandatory for next gen.

And that was arguably the most expensive component of the thing, and even then it probably wasn't terribly expensive since ATI was making PC cards off similar tech. And a slightly-modified DVD drive with a and a commodity PowerPC CPU weren't what you would call expensive.

the dual shock i s the best model of a controller you can find, if sony change it for the xbox model it will be a sad day in gaming history

what difference does it make to gaming if sony change their controloler?none at all. its not the end of the world.

ps i prefer the 360 controller.
