Mario..pac man....Pikachu(although he doesn't count..he gets his fame from anime)...MC is popular but not at mario level.
LOL @ people saying Link. Ask random people who Link is and they'll be WTF. Link is not a mainstream iconic figure. He's an iconic figure for the HARDCORE market and Nintendo fans.(hence why he wins every GF character battle).

I'm gonna have to agree. I don't think Master Chief has hit that level. My parents would not know who the hell he is, but they know Pac Man, Mario, and Donkey Kong.

The thing those three have in common? They have all been around for a very long time. That seems too be the deciding factor in popularity. MC could be the most popular character introduced after the 90s though.

Yeah, but to me it seems that the popularity of a character and how well it's known to non-gamers are pretty related to one another. I would be hard press to find more than a handful of adult non-gamers that know who Master Chief is, not the case with the other ones listed.

That's.....not my point. In the second part of my post I was trying to say "what character introduced after 2000 is the current most popular".
^^ 13+ means the person is at least from 1995 or lower, the start of the N64/Ps1 which was a BIG step up the industry. NO 10 year can tell you the "good" times he had with Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy 7, so he obviously doesn't know how big these characters were and even now still are.

Even my grandparents know who Pikachu and Mario are, my mom used to play Super Mario bros for NES and still can PWN me on speed runs.
The anime COMES from the game, so he's technically a video game character, actually he's a video game character on all fronts. Pikachu is not only well known from the anime but from Pokemon Yellow and the HUGE ammounts of advertising Nintendo did back then for the first pokemon games, the anime being one of these marketing schemes.
Mario, Sonic, and Pacman are my guess as to who people recognize most. I mean seriously, you can't deny any of them of that. Sure, Sonic and Pacman may not be in AAA games anymore, but they were pioneers (Pacman especially) of the gaming industry along with Mario. Master Chief is working his way up to that level though. I still wouldn't put him up in the Top 3 though, he doesn't deserve it yet.
these are the most popular and well known, just go up to a little kid and ask him who master chief is or who link is, they'll most likeley know the characters above since they are the most well-known, but in the gamming community I have to say that the most popular are Mario, Snake, and Master Chief/Cloud not to sure.
Do this test, if your mom cant recognize them or cant name more that Mario(who is basically bigger than Mickey Mouse now) then they arent that famous, Master Cheif? No one in my family knows him, and if they do they just say Halo guy.
