A lot of good console games this gen offered many hours of entertainment. But among those, which are the ones that you believe deserve to be at the top of the best value for money list?

For me, 1.) White Knight Chronicles at about 1000 hrs play time. 2.) Saints Row 2 at about 250 combined overall hours played. 3.) Halo 3 at like 200 hours played on split screen alone. 4.) Black Ops at about 150 hours between combat training and online. 5.) FFXIII at about 120 hrs to platinum I paid the full 59.99$ for all (except Halo (duh)all others are PS3).

I don't game much on consoles so listing pc games here.

  1. The Orange Box - You get 4 of the finest sp gaming experience ever and one of the best mp games ever team fortress 2 which i have sunk over 700 hours in!
  2. Starcraft 2 - A decent sp with nice mission variety and innovative campaign mechanics and one of the best competetive mp experience available not to mention the powerful editor allows totally different games to be made with it and provides tons of free content generated by the community.
  3. Heroes on Newerth - Its premise is simply but really mastering all the intrigues of this game takes time and their are plenty of diffrent classes to choice from each with different play styles and build orders to experiement with.
  4. Bad Company 2 + vietnam expansion - The best online modern military shooter this gen by far.
  5. Left 4 Dead 2 - The sequel to the best co-op game with even more weapons and zombies!)

Red Dead Redemption - Nice long single player campaign, with tons of side things to do, and a crazy awesome time in Free-Roam multiplayer or competitive as well, especially with friends. Definitely worth it and so is RDR Undead Nightmare

GTA IV - While it may be disappointing for some expecting as much to do as in San Andreas, it does offer quite a bit, I put about 60 hours into 100% the game on my one save file alone, not to mention the countless hours I've spent online and messing around. The Episodes from Liberty City really add a lot more fun things to do, and offer a real deal when it comes to DLC (Especially compared to $15 map packs :P) get the GTA IV complete edition to get them all bundled.

Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 - I've put in tons of hours playing this series with friends in the computer lab at school, great games.

Just Cause 2 - Huge map and tons of ridiculous things to do along with single player

Orange Box - Half Life 2, HL2 Episode 1 and 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal...enough said

(Also, L.A. Noire is supposed to be pretty long, but I haven't started it yet to really say enough about it :P)

demons souls - put 200 hours into the asian import, not to mention the US localization.

3d dot game heroes - 30 hour game for 40 dollars.

a lot of the shmups I play. its very easy to sink a couple 100 hours into all cave, treasure, and g.rev developed games.

Picross 3D, if the DS counts as a console. Other than that, Uncharted 2, Oblivion (I guess, I have the PC version) and Mortal Kombat is looking like another one.

Orange Box

Fallout 3 GOTY

Demon's Souls

Resident Evil 5 (strictly for the evolving inventory that you can use both offline and online)

Left 4 Dead 2 (not most valuable for everyone, but I have a fetish for zombie games and this one is very gory and very fun).

my list would just be my top 5 of the generation. value to me is simply buying a great experience rather than how much time the game sinks. but for people who do take that sort of thing into consideration, heres a valuable equation:

value=[(personal rating of game) x (hours spent playing)]/cost of game

:P

yes, dividing by zero destroys the formula's horrifying mathematical precision.

Value for money? Honestly I think it's better to treat games for the worth they give you in experience. But hey if you're that strapped for cash, then look no further than The Orange Box.

probably the XBLA/PSN games, they're cheap but lots of fun and some of them I can play for as long as I play a more expensive retail game, some of my favorites are games like Rez HD, Toy Soldiers, Dishwasher 2: Vampire Smile, Flower, and Blast Factor

To be clear I was addressing the first part of your post. The Orange Box is a good value, but only because the games are good as well as plentiful.

It actually didnt take me long to complete at all. I beat the game 3 times the first week it was out.

I have gotten over 1000 hours out of the 3d Ninja Gaidens. The battle system is that good. They are meant to be replayed multiple times, along with the mission modes. I never get tired of the gameplay. I still play through Ninja Gaiden Black every few months and its a 6 year old game.

Ah yes, it was kind of forgotten since Nintendo discontinued it (and the Wii doesn't exist in SW). Definitively great value.

1) Yakuza 4: Besides the main story path the game is jam packed with content and side missions.

2)Demons Souls: Really rewarding gameplay and intense exploration plus lots of weapons and magic to find and unlock.

3) Valkyria Chronicles: Exciting battles and allows for strategy with amazing replay value.

4) Uncharted 2: The closest a game has gotten in combining a movie and game experience in one amazing package, not to mention the online play which is surprisingly good.

5) LA NOIRE: Only half way through the game and already I feel I got my money's worth. Seriously a title not to be missed, just driving around in the the game is rewarding, feels like you've gone back to the 40s! The devs definitely did their homework and it shows.

Rock Band, Halo 3, Forza Motorsport 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and I can't really think of a 5th game on any platform that really stands out from a value-per-dollar perspective.

Fallout 3 GOTY in my opinion. The game itself with all the dlc for just the price of a regular $60 game.

-The Orange Box
-Halo: Reach
-Fallout 3 GOTY
-Forza Motorsport 3
-Mortal Kombat (I know wierd choice but it's all there- Story Mode/Ladder Mode/Challenge Tower/Mini-games/Online MP/Tons of unlockables.)

I'd also mention the excellent Metroid Prime Trilogy, but production is over for that, and you wont find it for less than $80-$100 these days. Back when it was 50, it was an amazing deal.
