All these games are exceptional at what they attempt to do. Galaxy 1 was both fresh and amazing from a level design perspective (whereas Super Mario 64 was fresh and groundbreaking but the level design hasn't aged that well; neither has the controls); Galaxy 2 took Galaxy 1's formula to the next level and tightened up the experience; Super Mario 3D World combined the Galaxy and 2D Mario formulas in an incredibly satisfying way and has some of the most inventive level designs in the series; Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are pitch perfect 2D platforming classics that gave the series and platformers in general a new level of depth.

Galaxy 2 is probably technically the best one, but I can pick up and enjoy Super Mario Bros. anytime and still have fun with it.

Top two are easily Yoshi's Island and Galaxy 2.

The others could really be any of them.

It would lose all it's charm. A large part of why it was such a great game was because Square were so limited and had to use actions of characters to tell a story.

Not counting any Mario spinoffs...

.... and to be fair, I do feel that NSMBW and NSMBU stand toe to toe with SMW and SMB3. They're just not as inventive, not as charming, and they don't have nostalgia hooks piercing into my soul.

Yoshis island is a gimmick. It runs on a different principle than Mario. I know it shares the title but IMO it is more of a spin off.

Mario 64 controls better than Mario Galaxy. All of these games are great but the finesse of Mario got dumbed down a bit....and then picked back up some with 3d World.

I'm sorry, but Mario Teaches Typing is the clear #1. How you could leave it off of any top 5 list is beyond me.
