What games have you found to have the best artificial intelligence?
I really enjoyed Shenmue 1 & 2 back in the day on Dreamcast, i mean it's perhaps laughable now but back then it blew many people away.
Dead Island's Zombie AI is pretty good for it's time, however normal NPC AI was bad lol.
Crysis yes that should be in anyone's list, including warhead.
Not played Isolation.
Quantum Break is a flop on PC.
The AI in AI Wars is pretty damn epic.
How is Crysis AI good?
It's basic but it's very good in terms of pathing, tracking and flanking.
How is Crysis AI good?
Go back to 2007, make sure you buy a 8800GTX and a Core 2 Duo, load up Crysis, nothing like it.
Today though you can mod it...
Agree on your list but I would put Thief, Left for Dead 2 up there. Max Payne 3 also had some top notch AI. Quantum Break I have yet to formulate an opinion on it. Player can look very op and the enemy with artificial power seem to do one thing predictably break out of your bubble trap in one way.
Meh... it was buggy and the AI is slow to react. Crysis 2 is even worse, never played 3. Something like Halo is much better, Killzone 2 has the best AI i've seen.

HALO... is this a joke?

No, it's pretty good.
@mjorh: FEAR is a pretty good game, you should try it! For a pre 7th gen game it's pretty amazing technically.
MGS2/3
You're going to get laughed out of the thread, but I do very much enjoy the AI in these games.
A lot of peoples opinion of what good AI means is tied directly to how realistic it is. For me though, good AI is a matter of how well it lends itself to the type of game you're playing. It may not actually be good AI by any strict definition, but if it makes the game that much more fun then I'm down. It's similar to how dude laughed at Chozo above for mentioning Halo, but hey, that AI in Halo was pretty damn fun to play against.
MGS3 and especially MGS2 fit the bill on that. Also, MGS2 has some legitimately cool ass search procedures compared to most stealth games.

Yeah i should give it a shot, so curious to see what's the fuss about AI in that game.
It's a horror game tho , might not be able to finish it lol

We don't agree on everything but this is spot on for how I see things. Knowing that MGS2 is a 2001 game it's simply unbelievably amazing what the game did in terms of AI.

Yeah, for its time it was just holy shit amazing stuff. And even now there are many aspects of MGS2's AI that I'd like to see in more games.
Most importantly though, it was just fun. It was challenging when it needed to be, but it also left a lot of room for experimenting, goofing around, and just a shit ton of replay value in general.
My picks would be:
1. Alien Isolation
2. F.E.A.R
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R
4. Crysis
5. (toss up, can't decide) Thief & Metal Gear Solid 2
Honerbly mention: Halo, Halflife 1
All Thief games' AI was ahead of its but now you can see some patterns due to which AI becomes a bit predictable. But it's not dumb. It's still smart. From what I've played I think Quantum Break also has pretty solid AI. FEAR and Starcraft 2 are easily the best. Path finding in Starcraft 2 is perfect and every unit (controlled by computer as well as player) is extremely intelligent. As for FEAR, we all know it's absolutely brilliant.
Crysis and Batman Arkham City.
Haven't played F.E.A.R , which majority of ppl claim it to be the best in terms of AI.
You haven't played FEAR? Lol WTF bro? It's one of the best shooters ever made, with great horror, enjoyable story, fantastic graphics, amazing AI and the BEST gunplay in FPS TO DATE. Play it ASAP.
@Cloud_imperium: Well, i was just 12 back then ....cut me some slack *sobs*
Alright, i'll grab it on Steam :D
Now you have become a manly gamer.

lmao , is it too scary? if so, then i can't beat it lol
No it's not. It's a shooter primarily and it focuses more on action. There are times when the game switch gears and becomes a bit creepy but it's not like Amnesia or Silent Hill. You can play it.

I came in here to say FEAR. They are extremely reactive and smart, but act realistically. Like, ambush them and they will freeze for a second or two before getting their shit together.
Also the Thief games. They have some flaws and exploits, but are still really advanced. More advanced than a lot of modern gaming's AI. It makes the games really challenging and tense.

Alright, i'm sold on!
Thanks.
Some might laugh but The Division actually has pretty good AI?
Yes most of the enemies are bullet sponges but I saw many times them flank me and use those big sponge elites coming for me to their advantage.
1942: Pacific Air War - When you're warned not to dogfight with a Zero, take it seriously. A patch of the game AI made the Zero very tenacious in a turning fight. It outmaneuvered all Allied fighters. Better not be caught in low altitude (no way to zoom away in a dive) or you're going down.
Far Cry 4 - A good combination of bold attackers and those who take cover. I love it especially when I attack from the air. Enemy AI would take cover inside buildings, under trees, or anything else that may provide cover. They pop out to take a shot and then head back to cover. Armored troopers intentionally go out into the open as bait. When I attempt to take them out, the non-armored troopers lash out with small arms fire and mortars if you fly low enough.
FEAR, you needed that slow motion or you were gonna get F'd in the B
anyhow, there's like weird AI traits going around for some games where the enemies know if you have their cover area targeted for the moment when they pop theird heads out, so if you're aiming down your sights they won't unveil themselves to you, but the moment you pull out your zoom they know to pop their head out again, it doesn't just seem coincidental but like the AI is specifically designed to do this at times... cheap shit AI, I hate this feature most of all
It's a bit sad that if enemies try to flank you it's already considered good AI.
But generally speaking Starcraft 2 actually has good AI, cpu is actually quite good at adapting
Splinter Double Agent (in DA, I felt like guards have random moves, one guard turns his back and moves away then, he suddenly, after 2 seconds turns his face to me, WTHeck?), Metal Gear Solid V Phantom Pain (I get spotted sometimes from distance or making small noise), Dishonored (how many times have I reloaded my save to try again to not get spotted?), Divinity OS (battles lasted for an hour or two for me, sometimes), Dark Souls (for ex. when you open Artorias' door, you'll encounter various undead, some of them (even though they're weaker) knew how to trick me, most of the game plays like this).
Agree on your list but I would put Thief, Left for Dead 2 up there.
Why Left 4 Dead 2? If the thread was about the worst AI ever, that game would've come to mind.. Both survivor and special zombie AI are probably the dumbest AI I've ever seen in a video game.
Crysis and Batman Arkham City.
Haven't played F.E.A.R , which majority of ppl claim it to be the best in terms of AI.
I love the Batman games, but where is Ai that good?

In Predator mode.
Tbh, AI has never been THAT compelling to me in any game.
