yeah i totally agree with super star wars being on that list, those games are... soooooooooooo soooo bad... and everyone just keeps talking about how great they are, its insane
and btw whats the deal with world class track meat being on there, ive never played it, but lol that looks like the most fun game ever lol
am i the only one that thought FFVI and FFV wasn't as good as FF7??tiger35010
I would to if I had no taste.
The way I see it... You can look back and rip on any old games for flaws that seem more apparent now than they did back then. Or you can remember them for the experiences they gave you at the time. I prefer the more positive approach.

the problem is that this refers to games that people today wont stop talking about, saying how great it was and that its still better then todays games, and when you do try the game you end up thinking.... all the hype all the perfects and 10s and screams at how this from 10 years ago is better then todays games... for THIS?!?
I dislike negative articles. Nostalgia is personal experience, not some objective critique to tell people "don't" feel that way. Whatever...I probable reading too deep in this.

A number of people have been saying FF7 isn't the Jesus of RPGs for a long time now. They were just ignored because the game was such a success. But now, many better RPGs AND FF games have come and people still continue to worship and compare them all to 7...as if 7 is the RPG all others must compare and try to live up to.

*shrug* Final Fantasy VII was the first to break through into mainstream.
And it was awesome, in so many ways.

The truth is, there are still some elements that haven't been surpassed in today's games, which is probably why VII is still held up on a pedestal. Also, keep in mind, VII did many things right for it's time and in the end as a whole package gave players an experience they had never had before, leaving an over all impression on them. Comparing that whole package to today's games which in many cases only have a portion of that expected whole package can leave one wanting more.I totally agree and have been saying pretty much what they say for YEARS now. My experience has been the only people who worship and keep hyping FF7 are people who have never played an RPG before. It isn't even close to the best FF game. While FF7 is a solid game, and pretty good, it has become legendary an undeservedly so. Mainly because of the Massive number of mainstream/casual gamers the PS1 attracted, who never played RPGs before (or even videogames) and this was not just the first big RPG for the consoles, but the first for THEM.ZIMdoom
Does that mean people who enjoyed the game shouldn't feel nostalgic about it?

Apparently not. I realize that many cut their first teeth on VII but that excuse is used way too often for those of us that enjoyed it.[QUOTE="st1ka"][QUOTE="Terami"]The way I see it... The irony is that you needed to point out FF7 in the thread title, when it's popularity means you are clearly wrong.leejohnson7

This is one fo the few times I must agree with you. Being a fan of the series since it was first released in the US (FFIII), I can never get those legions of frothing FFVII fanatics. I think the only ones worse are the FFX ones.
I dislike negative articles. Nostalgia is personal experience, not some objective critique to tell people "don't" feel that way. Whatever...I probable reading too deep in this.

Exactly what I was going to say. Nostalgia is not about how good something is, it is about how well it captures the emotion of times long gone.
For instance Dr Mario is very nostalgic to me because it reminds me of the Christmas when we first got the NES (it came packaged with Dr Mario) and the fun me, my brother and my father had during the holidays playing that game. While there were better games I have played on the NES none of them evoke the same sense of nostalgia that Dr. Mario does.

What would everyone replace it with? (just fyi, I loved VIII more than VII so I already took it off it's pedestal).

Dragon Warrior on the NES would be my first RPG and I don't feel very nostalgic towards it.Dragon Warrior on the NES would be my first RPG and I don't feel very nostalgic towards it.Terami
Okay, but I'm not saying it's a necessity to be nostalgic. However, you can see someone saying, "FFVII is a nostalgic moment for me. It was my first RPG ever."
i personally feel it does deserve nostalgia, and disagree with most of the criticisms
this is mainly due to it being the first FF game i played, it was probably the only ps1 game i paid over £40 for as well, but to be fair no other RPG got the kind of marketing this game had, it might not of been amazingly groundbreaking for the genre, but id argue that it was grounbreaking in letting the genre have a global appeal

Yeah, I can agree with that. I consider Shinning Force I & II very nostalgic as they were my first strategy RPG's and although I have enjoyed many others since then, I still regard them as my favorites.lol wow i've been saying this for years, and yet every one was againest me.
ff7 sucked compared to past and future atempts at the fanchise.

And Da Vinci Code was one of the most successful thriller novels in history.
Hype and marketing can make big sales happen, even when a product has nothing else to stand on.
I don't agree at all. I've played many RPG pre and post FFVII (including the previous FF titles). It is one of the best the franchise has to offer, and to watch someone claim FFIV to have more depth in any shape is laughable (the game had more depth in plot only over the ones before it, besides that it was by far a huge step backwards for the franchise in terms of it's gameplay).
Honestly FFVII was the only title on there that carried any sort of popularity nowadays, and it made the list just seem like a poor excuse to piss on FFVII.
Final Fantasy 7 is 10 year old for christsake, i think that negates any argument about it, the fact people till go on about it so much proves it was revolutionary, and Final Fight doesnt deserve nostalgia? the journalist who wrote that article is on crack.
What next? Sonic, Super Mario Bros, Doom, Elite, Zelda, Diablo, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil ect, are all mediocre?
Yeah FF7 is poor in comparison to games today in most aspects, but like i said its 10 bloody years old, it was mindblowing at the time, the GTA4 of its day
Im sick of this cool to hate mentality, and this modern culture of ragging on stuff, people think it makes them cool or clever if they hate on something popular, if that guy who wrote the article had any kind of integrity in my opinion he wouldnt have mentioned Final Fight or FF, as they are both extremely important defining moments in popular gaming culture.
You can admit you dont like a game, because your not into the story ect, but you have to respect it, i dont like Zelda games that much, but im not about to say they are crappy, because i know they are imensly popular and well made games.
I dont like WOW, but im not going to turn around and say it s a pile of crap, its doing something right to have so many players, and the infastructure running the game is phenominal, it would have never of worked 5-10 years previous.
But you know, whatever, props to the guy for saying Final Fantasy 7 is overated, you have to have a pair of brass balls to say that.
Id stake money on it though that more gamers would say he is wrong than right.
