Totally agree with FF7 there. I loved the game, but seriously, what is with the fandom? Especially female fans of the game. They drive me insane with their undying love for Cloud and Vincent which honestly doesn't make any sense. How do you love a fictional character? :?
Only fan that annoys me more in the FF fanbase are the ones who played FF7 as their very first RPG while calling all the ones before it "archaic" and "boring". I respect opinions, I just wish people would give more props to FF7s predecessors, especially FF4 and FF6. Those get way too little attention in the overall FF fanbase.

FFIV doesn't deserve anymore credit than it gets already. Unlesswe're supposed to be awe struck by a RPG that leads you by thehand like no other FF has before or after it. A development system that is nothing more than gaining experience, and give you absolutely no choices what so ever. And if you're talking about "FF2" as released on SNES then tack on dumbed down. Seriously the game was a step back for the series other than plot, even FFI gave the user more variety in it's development system and that's sad.
Don't get me wrong I like FFIV, I just don't think it deserves more attention than it gets.

What's with the FFVII hate?! Admittedly I liked 8 and 9 better, but I've actually gone BACK to 7 to re-play it I like it so much. I guess it was just the fact that it was the true start for 3D FF games. I also love Crisis core on my PSP, and the Advent Children movie.
FFVII: Crisis Core is currently my favorite Final Fantasy game though-- I love the new style of gameplay they implemented it-- it's like FFXII's, but significantly better in every way shape and form. Only works with one character though. I expect to see a slightly better version of it yet in FFXIII Versus.

All of those you listed still trumped IV in choices, what's your point? To further prove how shoe horned a design FFIV was? Congrats you did well.
Did I say the remaining FF titles weren't linear? No. JRPG are linear by design, I don't need you preaching something I know very well. What you missed in all of what i said is that FFIV takes the lead you by the hand design to it's extreme.
As for FFVII it had little individual character development, but it's dev system was still nice and allowed for many flavors of play styl and the plot was filled with some holes but still very nice. I've watched you piss on this game in the past, we will not agree on this subject.
i agree with the ff7 criticisms... it's all style and no substance. most people are blinded by the "coolness" and "badassery" of the character designs when in fact the characters are one dimensional and lame personality-wise
still, i enjoyed the game very much
I don't know if you can say that a game doesn't deserve nostalgia. I mean its the persons decision whether or not they are nostalgic over a game. However Final Fantasy 7 is definately overrated. As overrated as the FF7 is it is not as overrated as Final Fantasy 6 or 4.
1998 was squares best year easily.
That list sucked. Seriously, who talks about most of those titles?? And for their time, they were fun. You can't compare games of yesterday to today. But you can't say that yesterday's games are better in everyway to today's games either.
Powerpad? You mock something like that with the Success of the Wii?? So sorry the editor sucked and couldn't beat the game on his/her own. Don't be so fat and lazy.
Final Fight? TMNT, Marvel, Those games were a blast. Don't forget golden Axe and simpsons.
FF7 deserves nostalgia, but probably not to the degree it gets.
I haven't even heard of some of the titles they listed... Most of those seem so out of place against a title like ff7.
Looks like they just like to make top 7 lists for the hell of it. I'm sure adding FF7 in there was a good way to get some site clicks.

FFVII may have been better than FFIV, but FFVI stands far above FFVII in everything except graphics.
[QUOTE="tiger35010"]am i the only one that thought FFVI and FFV wasn't as good as FF7??EPaul
nope
Double Nope

I have to side with RPGamer on this one. But mostly I'd like to touch on the topic of JRPG's being linear. Many JRPG's, even to this day, still seem to lack one major thing that most of the FF series offered from I to IX... Freedom to explore. They gave you a sense of exploration in a huge world. They almost felt open ended as once you went beyond a certain point, you were pretty much free to traverse the world... Exploring. In VII, VIII and IX, these worlds seemed to be much larger.
VII added an element to the game that actually added to the game, in terms of giving you the desire to level and find new materia. Far too often I hear the word "grind" and while I will not say it wasn't in VII, I will say it was less of a grind leveling your characters while exploring. Seeing your characters and the materia they used grow was very addictive and dare I say fun?
I don't care what anyone says about VII's characters, I liked them! It's characters, world, story and music touched me in a way that only one other game even comes close... FF VIII. No one can take that nostalgia away from VII on a personal level. Sure, some may feel they've played better games but everyone's experiences are different. While no game is perfect, I don't think anyone can realistically stand there and say VII didn't deliver a memorable experience.
