I agreed with gears of war because introduced us to first true "next gen" gaming experience back in the days. Not only was the single-player game loaded with plenty of EPIC "oh **** moments and amazingly gory chainsaw battles, but it also brought "online co-op" into the mainstream like no console title before.

Im gonna name mine and then look... no particular order.

Assassins Creed

Mass Effect

Little Big Planet

Uncharted

Crysis

Now I shall look...

EDIT: Ahhhhhhh!!!!! How could I exclude GEARS!!!!??? silly me. Bioshock is a nice pick too, I wont complain. This list is pretty much right on, but you could substitute a few new IP's and not ruffle any feathers.

Why do people post links to places like pagesportal or n4g? Why not just link to the actual article? Like this: http://beingnerdy.com/xbox-360/top-5-new-ips-that-absolutely-define-this-console-generation

On topic, all 5 are noteworthy for this gen, but saying just 5 is hard, since there are alot of franchises that hold value for defining this generation.

I'd say Gears.... Mass Effect.... Bioshock..... Uncharted..... & ummmmm...... I'm drawing a blank..... Assassins Creed, perhaps? My number 1 game to define this generation would be Gears.... not only is it a terrific game and franchise.... but it was the first "OMG game" to arrive this generation. Though Kameo was impressive too, especially when you consider it was a launch title. *edit* WOW... I CHOSE THE EXACT SAME 5

Nice list, at least as far as Bioshock is concerned and maybe Unhcarted 2, although I don't personally have much interest in the game.

For me:

  1. Bioshock
I don't like shooters, especially FPS ones, but this one was fun. I guess I like survival horror genre, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of the game.
  2. Valkyria Chronicles
One of the games that made me want to get a PS3.
  3. Mega Man 9
Some might not think it, but it's a system seller for some of us. Thankfully it was on all three systems. The thought of a brand new MM game in the 8-bit style was very appealing. Very hard and surprisingly fun. I don't think nostalgia plays a role for me because I like the old s regardless of the actual game's age.
  4. Batman: Arkum Asylum
Fun, looks pretty good, and I don't normally like licensed character games, but I really liked this.
  5. Donkey Kong Country Returns
the generation we finally get a real DKC game after the amazing, fun, great-looking SNES series.

It's hard to distinguish "new" IPs anyway since they're so cookie cutter and generic nowadays anyway, so they might as well count.

Ok, so if they absolutey must be: Bioshock, Motorstorm, Portal, Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Souls.

I feel as thought Batman Arkham Asylum might as well be considered a new IP. It's not part of any old series of Batman games. It was its own thing, and Arkham City is continuing this new series, and it has nothing to do with other Batman games like the Wii one.

Gears Of War and Mass Effect are obvious choices. The rest I don't agree with. AssCreed did nothing but bore people. UC didn't really change anything. Bioshock could be there, it's more of a follow up to System Shock though. I'd put Company Of Heroes on the list, it directed RTS away from the resource collecting. And maybe Crysis for really pushing the technology for its time.

Not really. Every TPS has copied the over the shoulder view. I said it wasnt from this gen which i pointed out so it wasnt much of a failure when i know the history already.

Elder Scrolls is not a new franchise, the first Elder Scolls (called Arena) was out in 1993 if I remember well and it was awesome.

Suprised that no mention for Dead Rising, MIrrors Edge. Would Super Mario Galaxy be defined as a new IP?! Mario is a old character but the level design in the game was innovative and new.
