Using various media and smaller sites, here are, so far, the top genres across PC/Xbox One/PS4/Wii U (expn/limited editions excluded)(Mobile, handheld and Steam excluded)
(These are by number of titles by genre)
FPS: 65
Driving games: 36
Rpgs: 32
TPS: 23
Sports: 22
Action Adventure: 14
Other: 71
In comparison, starting from the beginning of last gen to the same point in time in 2008 (excluding 360 year head start) FPS was at 53. If you include the 360 year head start (combined with post 360 launch PC, it would be 71. This is interesting because in the next couple months the number will be reaching around 71, and then by December first it will be over 71 by a good margin. While I did stop until August of th 2006-2998 time frame, the confrimed 2015 announcements will already have more FPS by the end of this year.
It looks like, at least SO FAR, another generation dominated by First Person Shooters. Especially in the AAA and AA space. So far this gen FPS is tracking ahead further by quite a bit, the time when FPS was peaking and it was all over the place in PC and consoles.
Oddly though, TPS are down by around ~7 points.
Driving games have increased by ~8 points.
Action Adventure is down by ~15 points.
Sports will be a bit lower by around ~10 or so due to a lack of "alternate" type sports games.
RPGS decrease by 9.
