Using various media and smaller sites, here are, so far, the top genres across PC/Xbox One/PS4/Wii U (expn/limited editions excluded)(Mobile, handheld and Steam excluded)

(These are by number of titles by genre)

FPS: 65

Driving games: 36

Rpgs: 32

TPS: 23

Sports: 22

Action Adventure: 14

Other: 71

In comparison, starting from the beginning of last gen to the same point in time in 2008 (excluding 360 year head start) FPS was at 53. If you include the 360 year head start (combined with post 360 launch PC, it would be 71. This is interesting because in the next couple months the number will be reaching around 71, and then by December first it will be over 71 by a good margin. While I did stop until August of th 2006-2998 time frame, the confrimed 2015 announcements will already have more FPS by the end of this year.

It looks like, at least SO FAR, another generation dominated by First Person Shooters. Especially in the AAA and AA space. So far this gen FPS is tracking ahead further by quite a bit, the time when FPS was peaking and it was all over the place in PC and consoles.

Oddly though, TPS are down by around ~7 points.

Driving games have increased by ~8 points.

Action Adventure is down by ~15 points.

Sports will be a bit lower by around ~10 or so due to a lack of "alternate" type sports games.

RPGS decrease by 9.

I'm confused, is this retail only? What does "best" genre mean? Why didn't you list platformers, and if you did, why is it in other?

Also lol at action adventure, that's way too damn broad of a topic.

What are those numbers?

Average on MC?

Total numbers of game by genre?

I'm glad for the boost in racing games , but i can't make heads or tails from this.

And what does limited edition excluded mean?

Because it's too small.

Also I have no idea why you are confused, I didn't say anything about digital or retail so it includes both.

That limited editions.... Are excluded? (MKX ultimate edition with statue is an example, it's still the same game.)

The title says Top genres, and of course, best selling should be a reflex looking at this list. FPS won't be dying anytime soon. Driving seems to be the runner up so far, but output there seems to be shrinking.

yes. Exactly.

65 FPS, 36 driving games, etc.

FPS is once again for better or wosre, the biggest genre this gen so far, outpacing the starting years of lat gen, where FPS and clones were taking off.

I'm saddened that Action Adventure has lost some points as that is one of my favorite genres. I'm happy to report that I only own one FPS game this gen; Destiny. Last gen wore me out on the genre to the point that between 2009 and the launch of PS4, I didn't bother with any FPS games.

Okay, good analysis. But here's a question, where did you get the data from? Could you share your sources?

Well racing games are picking up.

I'm glad only for that , but i hope they don't stay in the Semi-sim or sim genre.

Pcars and Drive Club are good games , but when GT7 comes i won't look at any other sim untill i find The Escudo and The Pope Mobile.

Wish Burnout came back and Motorstorn or just something that is not boged down by car manufacure companies.

I said above. Everywhere. gamefaqs, Moby games, GR, GT, GS, Allgame archives (sadly main site is down), VGCL, Amazon, Gamespot, Official websites of console holders, a few smaller websites.

This allowed me to find as many games as possible. If I'm missing any its a very very very low margin.

You got worn our of FPS BEFORE 2009? Seems a bit odd, as thats when it was starting to get nuts in pure numbers.

But anywho, Action adventure will probably get some attention. GTA V shows theres still a big market, and Watch dogs shows some new IPS can work. I don't know how much they will pick up though.

@TigerSuperman: Yeah, the last two FPS games I bought before PS4 were Killzone 2 and Chronicles of Riddick on PS3. I never got in to militaristic FPS games beyond the Bad Company games.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, although, the SW trolls are just gonna say there's stuff missing from your list and ignore it.
Of course they wouldn't make a better one themselves, since they contribute nothing...

Anyway, it makes me sad that the two genres that I dislike the most (FPS and Racing) are the most prevalent ones. I also wonder how many of those 32 RPGs are for the Wii U. I'm guessing 2 or 3, at best?

How many people are playing those large number of indie platformers? How much of an impact do they have? Virtually none. Plus, this isn't about indies.

FPS currently is tracking faster during the same timeframe as last gen. Considering FPS were going wild at that period, this is very interesting. Possibly because of people playing it safe combined with the genre still selling, even with some big franchises getting a decline. Leaving devs to think there's still a market to grab.

If you include the 360 head start (and the PC games in that same period) the number would be higher than now, but by the end of the year, this gens number will even be higher than that. it's a pretty big increase.

You're projecting your issues on me. You only pretend your stupid when in my thread, but know what people are doing with the same topic by someone else. Clearly you feel down on yourself, and want to take it out over the internet. But you only make yourself look worse.

I'm sure you can type ".com" next to gamefaqs by yourself.

Look at all thsoe sources where I GOT LISTS of games, to come to the conclusion in the OP.

Are you freaking dumb as hell? You usually aren't this dumb, the sources are literally those websites above. Right there, HELLLLOOOOOOOOOO. When through all those lists and counted and blah blah! Helllooo!?!?!!

Whole point of IP is that I counted the games that were released. Try to keep up.

Stop the worries. There are alot of variety, especially if you add the indie market (2d platformers, shoot em up, fighting, strategy, rpgs, puzzle games, point and click adventures, etc...).

I wonder how TigerSuperman is able to handle all of these meltdowns....
on topic, i'm surprised by how many FPS is out there. Need more RPGs.
