Seems like a video game. Actually, forgot about this game entirely.

But it's here. it is now. Here we are.

http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/torment-tides-of-numenera-review/1900-6416631/

Torment wants you to dig through its hamlets and delve into its dungeons on your own. It isn’t about cutting down waves of foes, it’s not about being the one true hero, and it’s not wish fulfillment. Narrative is an end in itself. Story is the everything, and the play that backs that story, while minimal, gives the experience a weight that’s too often lost in other games. Torment defines itself as codified opposition to current trends, but that’s also not all it is. Using pools of points to set limits on its players and driving player expression through curiosity are novel additions to one of gaming’s oldest genres.

Taken together, Torment is far more than just a phenomenal role-playing game. It’s a challenge to restore the depth and nuance for which the genre was once known.

I really need to focus on playing this at some point.

I got a few hours in before Zelda came out, so I might just start again in a few weeks.

I was considering buying this but then NieR:Automata (pre-order) happened...

One day perhaps. The premise is really cool.

It sucks that people have been putting the steam reviews aggregator on some pedestal. It's not long ago that Valve had to change the colour of the text of 'mixed' to yellow, because it was in red text before.

Because if the review is not a joke post. Steam reviews are all about how well a game runs, whether or not it has Uplay. How long the game is. If it's 'worth $60' or 'too expensive for an indie game' or whether or not the developer did something the owner doesnt like in spite of them liking the game or crystal balling that the multiplayer will be dead in a month. Then with a final note telling me to pick it up on sale and nothing telling me about the mechanics of the game.

I like him but he is not always correct. his Doom review was worse. as he think game is not good because its not like doom 3 and its like doom 1 and 2 and he trash doom 1 and 2 and praise doom 3.

he think titanfall 2 is best SP FPS since half life 2 (lol if you think FEAR, STALKER, Crysis, both Metro games, Doom doesnot exist)

He praise BF1 SP

beside i have watch this review hour ago. i thought he was going to thumb it down because he trash the game for having xray vision, third person but he give thumbs up because he enjoy coop.

I understand some of the points he makes, and agree with a lot of it, regardless of his quantification his no nonsense attitude is somewhat admirable and occasionally quite effective in highlighting how ignorant and risible many modern reviewers are. He's clearly older, at least least 30 and has a history in the meduim, while many of these newer reviews are 20 somethings latching on to whatever is popular pop culture or social movement of the moment. In general, young people are a disgrace.

He's done himself a great disservice here though, almost immediately following up a (half hour?) attempt at an essay on why modern gaming is in a state with a video instantly throwing all that to the wind, puckering up and accepting one of the most cynically bastardized IP's around.

At least he's not Greg Miller.

@illmatic87: yeah steam reviews are simply awful. The only way that I use them is to browse for a couple of long, clearly serious and well thought out reviews, and just consider that handful of gamers' points. Because the rest of it is mostly nonsense

Hell yeah. Sounds like an immersive, rewarding experience. A good break from the shallow high-profile games we see a lot of.

Those preferring a mindless hack n' slash experience need not apply.

Complex RPG.

Vs teenages going through little dungeons talking about their problems.

Christ.

Then there is Nier... which has nothing to do with the RPG genre barely.

I was super hyped for this till I read a preview saying you're encouraged to avoid combat to get through the game. Sounds more like a visual novel or an adventure game than an RPG though I haven't read the reviews yet. I'll have a look later.

I was kinda excited about the PS4 version of the game, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $50 for an indie. I'll get it when it drops to $30.

I don't get this mindset - who cares how it is published. It's a huge, full fledged game with rich player choice and great artistry - if Bioware had made this exact same game would it have been worth $50?

I've played a couple of hours. Superbly written, outstanding art, and a freakishly amazing setting. Numenera was the ideal choice for a Planescape: Torment spiritual sequel and, as a spiritual sequel, this game certainly does not disappoint. Its one flaw, so far, is that Numenera, while amazing as a setting, lies on the weak side when it comes to character customization and battles. It's just too simple for its own good. But, then again, that may be a good thing for lots of people who want to try out this game or its tabletop sibling.

Also, here's some irony for ya:

While I intend to get my deep roleplaying fix from this video game, my weekly D&D session is a mindless kill-that-thing-for-the-XP-and-take-the-loot hack and slash kind of game. Mind you, I am loving every second of both, but that goes to show you that both hobbies are far more versatile than some people may think.

If it's anything like original, which the review more or less flatly states, you'll be reading 80% of the time.

Not for everyone, but it sets it apart from the rabble. The story itself is some deep shit in Planescape Torment, need to be really pretentious to get it.

I am loving it so far, I have the last battle to do and I will be done.

Some of the best writing in years, infact might be my favorite writing since Mask Of The Betrayer and Planscape Torment. The combat needs some work but it does have some cool ideas, some stuff works well in the combat and others not so well.

I also love the art design and the game world design, I find myself exploring every inch of the game and also talking to every single person as the dialogue is so well written and interesting. All the great writing and the game world has just totally pulled me in.

So far it has the best writing of the cRPG resurgence but also some of the weakest combat (thankfully you can beat the game with doing as little combat as you want). In the end it is right up there with the other modern crpgs I have enjoyed such as Divinity Original Sin, Pillars, Tyranny, Shadowrun Hong Kong and Wasteland 2.

Yes it has alot of reading but if you allow yourself to be pulled in, it is quite the experience. Despite a slow start, it really has pulled me in as I said above.

No because people would complain about cut content and that the game is only 20 hours long.

Seems to be getting a mixed reception from blessed Steam users.

Not matter, Pillars Of Eternity finish must.
