I happened to be at the local gamestop buying Mass Effect when I saw a guy put a PS3 on the counter to trade in for cash. The clerk offered him $198 for it, this is when everyone around gasped!! The guy must had been down on his luck because he reluctantly took the offer. The clerk taking pity on him finally gave him$230 for it without games etc and one controller. I guess my question is how is it that these stores calculate value? If a system still selling for roughly $400 doesn't even bring half of that in trade in? I believe the $230 the guy got for cash was really the store credit value which is usually more than the cash value. But if I had $200 on me at the time I would have interruped that transaction and came out of Gamestop cheesing!!
GameCrazy is somewhat better (usually), but only the desperate and/or clueless actually trade in games or consoles at those stores. Private sales/trades/eBay FTW!
edit: sometimes you can get coupon deals for % more on 2-4 trade ins which might make it worth it, but you have to search for them.
I hate when I see that usually it's someone selling something stolen or they are an addict. I had a friend recently try to sell me his guitar, I refused to buy it because I know how much he loved his guitar and I knew where the money would go.
