In response to talk about trimming the South Park game down and removing content as part of DLC he said "Fvk that"

During a Comic-Con panel yesterday attended by Polygon, Parker said the script he and Matt Stone wrote for The Stick of Truth ballooned to 850 pages, which was too long to be realistic.

Parker explained that his team was urged to "cut it down, cut it down, cut it down," and instead use this extra content as DLC. This drew jeers from the crowd, Polygon reports.

"And I agree f**k that," Parker said.

Good to see they won't be buckling and compromising their game just for DLC.

Yep. I do love how the industry actively goes for cutting down games and selling those portions as DLC

Its a shame Obsidian is making the game though. It will be buggy and be mediocre at best. Another game destined to get very mild praise and be forgotten in just a month after release.

It's absolute garbage. Can't believe they're so transparent to South Park writers about cutting portions of their game out of all people.

That makes me happy. They always stand up for what they believe in. But, your right this shows where companies are heading with games with regards to DLC. Would like more developers to follow this example but aside from indie developers I don't see that happening.

Thats the funny thing about video games too. I've never heard anyone complain that the movie they went to see was hour and a half instead of three hours long and saying they feel like they wasted their money because of it.

So, in order to take a stance against common industry practices, they've just dumped a significant portion of their work and will never let it see the light of day?

Or did they manage to pack it all into the game? If the former is true, then I'd rather they just released extra bits and bobs as DLC. Some content you have to pay for is better than absolutely no additional content at all..

I love when people selectively quote things out of context instead of taking two extra seconds to read the entire tiny article and think about it logically.

The team wanted to cut the game down because the material Matt and Trey presented couldn't possibly be done and have the game released in a reasonable timeframe.

Instead of releasing it as DLC, they aren't releasing it at all. It's just getting cut.

Won't be compromising their game just for DLC? No...you are just getting a tiny fraction of their concept and won't ever see the whole idea in game form.

I'd much rather play an 8 hour game that makes me feel like the developers were able to deliver the best and most pure experience they wanted and intended than a 100 hour game full of padding and time-wasting that does nothing to offer a better experience...only a longer one.

Seriously, it may seem like I'm making that up, but some of my best gaming experiences in the past 20 years have been from games that are 8 hours or less. Journey? Mark of Kri? The original RE titles for PS1? First 3 Silent Hills? Hell, I loved the hell out of Heavenly Sword despite that game being only 3 hours or something. Why? Because i felt like I was part of an experience/story and that I got what the developers were trying to do and they pulled it off perfectly. Games like that I keep, and come back to year after year to relive and often still enjoy them many years later.

100 hour games I often finish, think "that was amazing" and then for some reason forget about them a couple weeks later never caring to ever come back and play it again.

I think it depends on the style of gameplay. Certain genres just couldnt stay interesting if they had a 100 hour campaign. On topic: Trey and Matts dislike for DLC is welcome. I dont wanna have to buy the rest of the content for the game.

Comparing games to movies, sig is a pic from a Quantum Break, XB1 supporter.... boy you sure do like entertainment mediums other than gaming. Tell me, what happened on True Blood last week? I'm interested.

Here is what I think:

- DLC isn't bad, if it exists as an add on, rather than just being left out. For example, GTA IV LAD and GOGT. But then there is bullcrap, which is what Crapcom does.

- Maybe if they had to cut stuff out, they will use those ideas for the sequel.

I would have rather they stood up by saying, "**** that, we're keeping it in the game," rather than, **** that, throw it in the trash cant." Forum dudes hate DLC but I don't see the harm in choosing make it and sell it rather than we're not going to make it unless the production costs are so high that further development will sink the product and the studio.

Tbh, its this sort of attitude that makes me dislike trophies/achievments, they make people want to "get to the end" as quick as possible for a little shallow accolade.

South Park writers working with the best story/character/dialogue writers in gaming (Obsidian), this south park rpg is going to kick some major ass.

What are you talking about? The reason I hate trophies/achievements is because i feel I should be able to get most, if not all, trophies by playing a game normall and beating it. I should have to play for a million hours to beat the game 4 times and kill 10,000 enemies in under an hour to get the trophies. That seems to be the norm...not encouraging people to rush beat the game.

Not sure who he is referring to, but either Obisdian or Ubisoft can SMD for suggesting they do that. senses_fail_06

It was obviously Ubisoft, Obsidian has no say on DLC at this point, its almost always the publisher who calls for dlc. If im not mistaken only two of Obsidians games have had DLC (New Vegas and ONE DLC for Dungeon Seige 3).

I love long games just like I love long movies. But in the same respect there is indeed something to be said for trimming the fat and not overstaying your welcome.

You bring up some excellent game examples. But at the end of the day I think it's just subjective. You can only take a game on a case by case basis. If it feels like all of the content belongs there, and is only adding to the experience and not lazily attempting to fill it out, and most importantly if the game is good, then by all means make that game as long as you can. If it's an experience that truly doesn't need more than 5 to 10 hours to get either its story or gameplay efficiency across (i.e. DMC, Gears of War, Call of Duty) then just make it a tight and well executed package. (That's what she said...)

Yes there is. Easily. If a developer make their game long for the sake of being long, it probably won't be that good or the game is gonna have horrendous pacing.

IMO there isn't, i've never played a game and thought  "gee this game is too long", sure there's been games i didn't enjoy that felt like a chore to complete, but honestly when i have a game like that i just stop playing, because its just a bad game, not because its a very long bad game.

Agreed, although I don't have anything against DLC.
