True Next Gen Wii Coming in 2011

A true "next generation" Nintendo console, tentatively referred to as the Wii HD, will hit the market in 2011, according to the folks at What They Play. The site claimed that Nintendo is currently showing early presentations of Wii 2.0 to the game development community, and that Miyamoto's new device will be based on completely new hardware and will contain HD visuals, digitally distributed content and expanded storage.

The sources said the transition will be similar to "the shift from Game Boy to Game Boy Advance," meaning key elements (such as Wiimote-game interaction) will stay the same while the core hardware gets taken to a new level. Nintendo's not commenting, but What They Play pointed out that R&D spending at the company has more than tripled—from $103 million to $370 million—since the Wii was released two years ago. Be still my fluttering heart.

If this is even true, it makes sense. By 2011, the Wii will have been out for 5 years, which is normal. And then they can release a superior Wii. Im going to guess that they didnt release this hardware to begin because they didnt know how popular the Wii would be. Now that they know everyone wants one, then bring on the HD Wii! Oh well.... still 3 more years left in the Wii and there are still plenty of great games coming our for it.

THE PROBLEM is the PS4/720 will be out.It will still be a generation behind. The same problem.

Now, sure it's possible i'm just sounding off, but I wanted to put that out there for the TC, because he didn't seem to notice this at all. I may be wrong, but it's worth considering.

No, Nintendo told us that the Wii would definitely be nowhere near as powerful as the 360 and PS3. They never obfuscated that fact from us.

I'm talking about Nintendo said, and I'm paraphrasing, that Graphics are getting too good, and too similar that gaming needs a new direction. Something along the lines that you won't see as big a difference, because the jumps are getting smaller.

i dont see a big difference from 480i to 1080p its there but its not that big or thats just CoD4murat8

... Its true 720P is supported.. But at the same time a vastly superior format is supported aswell. The 1080p format might live for 20 years. While the 720P format might live alongside it for a while, but thats only because people actully bought it at in a relativley short transition between SD and HD, its a short lived format that was made to please peoples wallets, it wont be sold in a few years from now.. 1080P and 720P broadcasts developing at the same speed truly shows why 720P is just an unneeded format, there is no benefit.

720p is more then SD and if you define HD as greater then SD, then its HD, just like 481P would be.. But the next TV generation that we are seeing has always been intended for 1080P, nothing else. In 2 years 1080p TVs will be so ridicousley dominating that everyone who bought a 720p will feel robbed since they are not really a part of this generation.

CoD4 is 600p.

That doesn't make any sense. The GB to GBA was the equivalent of NES to SNES. ONE GENERATION. One Generation from Wii, graphically, would put the Wii2 at PS3/360 levels...instead of PS2/Xbox/PSP levels.

Yeah because the SNES had a 32 bit processor running at 16.7 mhz and 386 KB of ram. And don't mention stuff like Yoshi's Island that came out near the end of the generation and used a special chip. Gameboy Advance in console terms is in between the SNES and PS1.

Dude, no way. Sorry, just no. Forget the specs of what it takes to have a handheld operate like a console, the GBA was only a tad stronger than the SNES. It's no where near PSOne levels.

Even by your logic, that wouldn't place the Wii2 at PS4/720 levels, that would put the Wii2 at PS3/720 (Plus a little bit extra) levels.

It's not unlikely that Nintendo, nor MS, nor Sony have R&D for the PS4, Xbox 720 and Wii 2 down, now is it?

Released in 2011 though? Seems plausible, but I don't know I assumed 2012 is more accurate. :P

Well, anyways, I really hope that Wii 2 won't be as disappointing as Wii is right now. Lack of games, online structure, storage limitations, and Wii mote's use. (Wii 2 either has Wii Motion plus integrated day one, thus making games bc on Wii 2 or it forgoes a new route, but I doubt that will happen. Yet it's very unlike Nintendo to keep the same controller....)

I kinda understand, but then again I dont understand why everyone downplays Nintendo's ability to have a machine that outputs outstanding graphics. It's only this generation that they've had a home console that is a lot weaker than the competition and it's not like Nintendo has never delivered in the previous generations of gaming, but for some reason everyone acts like Nintendo's machines NEVER in their lifetime were they a powerful console.
