I'd like to point out Super Mario Bros, specifically because it's one of the most highly playable games i've come across today given the age and graphics. It's not that I don't think later 2D games don't hold up, on the contrary, to me 2D games don't age as badly as 3D games in general.

But I wouldn't find all Nes games playable saying that, 8 bit gaming is still ok, provided the games are made well. I still have a soft spot for the OLD Sunsoft BATMAN game on the gameboy which was based off the movie, It was fantastic, even the the soundtrack to the game is probably my favourite of all GB games i've played.

FPS games don't age well with me, graphics and gameplay move on. Strangely I still like PD on XBLA and I think that CoD as far back as the 2nd (which i'm on now) is still amazing, so maybe standards have slowed. But I got Half Life Source a year ago or so and didn't enjoy it much.

Super Metroid is somehow amazing even today.

AmayaPapaya

That's because, aside from the few hardcore fans who put together remakes, rebuilds and rethinkings, no one spends any time or effort capturing what made the game so amazing: the atmosphere. Graphics might have moved on since 1994... but very few games to have come out in the past 16 years have been as atmospheric as SM. All they seem to concentrate on is the gameplay, and trying to integrate new things into it... when SM was already perfect, and didn't need anything new (granted, things like the Spider Ball from Metroid II, and some of the creative items from remakes are very nice however). All they needed to do was reuse all the main elements in the game, maybe put some more pixels on the sprites, get Kenji Yamamoto to compose some great new music, and set in on a new world.

There is a reason why I've played Super Metroid probably more than 100 times (more than any other game I've ever played, including all the other games in the Metroid series combined). It's a ****ing stupendous game that hasn't been matched since its release in terms of quality (for the genre) and atmosphere. Even Metroid Prime, the game who copied a lot of what SM did with atmosphere, couldn't get it integrated as well, or as immersively as SM. Its a shame Gunpei Yokoi had to die. Though, for his last game, it surely was a masterpiece to go out on.

Hey, I freaking love Symphony of the Night... but the thing is, despite the game having deeper combat (in terms of weapon variety and RPG elements), greater non-linearity and more speed-running options... the atmosphere just isn't the same. Its just a generic castle. Super Metroid's Zebes is a living, breathing world. Sure, Michiru Yamane's music rivals that of Yamamoto's, but it doesn't suck you in as much as SM's. You don't feel like the music is actually representative of the environment you are in. Maridia's theme is calm, yet ominous, foreshadowing the trials you will soon face the deeper you go. Lower Norfair's theme is just blatantly ominous and frightening, completely representative of the most grotesque and threatening things Zebes has to throw at you. The Wrecked Ship theme makes you feel like you are in a broken down techno-marvel.

One of the most important things I see that separate the two games is this. Super Metroid offers many tiers of combat maneouvers. i.e. (1) dashing, jumping, bomb jumping (single); (2) single, or alternate wall jumping, horizontal/vertical shinesparking, pseudo-screw attack; (3) diagonal/mid-air shinesparking, infinite bomb jumping, infinite wall jumping (same wall), crystal flashing, beam-combo powerups (power bomb combos); and finally (4) mochballing, blue-suiting, murder-beaming, x-ray dashing (gets you inside walls) and various other repeatable glitches. What does Symphony of the Night offer? Double jump, bat/wolf/mist forms, a vast array of weapons (with very similar attacks), familiars (that are mostly useless due to the easiness of the game), up-dashing, shield-dashing, magic combos and special-attacks for weapons. Alucard is crippled compared to Samus in SM. And most of his maneuvers require very little skill or practice to maintain consistency. Its no wonder I highly preferred to play as Richter for speed runs... he has a much more fluid movement.

I can't help but mention that I am a HUGE Symphony of the Night fan, like HUGE (I've probably come close to 25 times through as Alucard, and maybe 50 as Richter; in the past couple years no less) but to underestimate how important Super Metroid was by comparison is a crime. Sure, SOTN is a fantastic game... but we have yet to see the actual influence in the industry that Super Metroid is capable of (aside from the not-for-profit fan remakes). When games like Metroid: Zero Mission, Order of Ecclesia and Shadow Complex are the closest we've come in the past several years to a true SM successor... we're still a freaking long way off. SOTN has influenced games like Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow and Curse of Darkness. I would personally argue that Curse of Darkness is the better game than SOTN, not only for music (more Yamane greatness) but the depth of the maneuvers, combat tactics (including familiar evolution) and overall dearth of things to do. Not to mention its diabolical "Crazy" mode that makes most action games (even Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden) wince in despair.

Super Metroid is one of the best games ever made. Period. I could probably write a 25-page essay about how great it is.
