KIngdom Hearts 2 , Tales of The abyss, tales of symphonia, ff12.

those were some great realtime jrpgs.

Now comes

star ocean 4, ff13, ff versus 13, ff7 crisis core, kingdom hearts 3, infinite undiscovery, cry on.

this will pave the way for nex-gen jrpgs with realtime battles and awesome stories.

I agree, I don't like turn-based like I did anymore. We need Pokémon to be turned into a beat'em up.

I don't think there is a place in the gaming world full of ADD people for A turn-base JRPG to be Reviewed Highly.

At least not for a Western Audience.

But those in the East Love that Crap.

Final Fantasy XII's combat was realtime as in commands are executed as soon as commanded? That's new because I could've sworn there was a delay.

FFXII is more turnbased than people try to make it out not to be. You issue a command they execute it, and wait their turn for the next command be it another input or a continuation of the last. Like Bioware's KotOR or Neverwinter Nights for instance.

There is room for both, I enjoy both and what they offer. I don't ever want one to trump the other by a majority b/c it'll get old real quick.

Nothing like a good ol' turn based JRPG thoughie, still.

That was the reason why I liked SMT: Nocturne and DQVIII so much.

Turnbased RPG's are usually more skillful then Realtime.

I mean I can't think of a Realtime RPG that is as skillful as Disgaea or Dragonforce.....*RPGGamer this is your cue to name one because I'm curious to play it*

No, it's an army vs. army strategy game, you don't control any units, just give them orders. You move in the world map in real time as you go conquering castles.

Any realtime aka action RPG that are skillfull?

Well the main issue is the fact that in most action RPG you have the ability to overwhelm opponents. The ones that take relativelymore skill are those that limit how much you can attack within a given time frame, which in turn limits (but doesn't negate) your ability to overwhelm.

Problem with RPGs in general(Miyamoto's reason for not caring about the genre actually), is that you can essentially overcome skill with time/dedication. If at first you don't succeed with skill, in most cases a quick power level can overcome what once you couldn't do with skill.

I don't know of any action RPG that actually require some skillful depth to complete. I mean I prefer setups like Seiken Densetsu II(where you essentially need to wait for your full ability to be realized, you can't just mash). Tales titles are hit and miss with skill and design (worst being prolly Tales of Legendia on both areas). Then something like Star Ocean 3 that limited the number of successive attacks before you became "tired", which is another preferred direction for me.

No way. Turn-based is awesome, at least to me. I love turn-based RPGs, as well as SRPGs. Heck, I love real-time RPGs, too, but I prefer good 'ol turn-based.

I didn't like KH2 for it's mindless button mashing and zero challenge gameplay, and I didn't like FF12 for it's sit there and watch your characters do everything while I do nothing gameplay. I want challenge in my RPGs, while it is true you can just level up to make turn based more easier, you could atleast keep at a reasonable level to make it challenging for yourself without power lvling.

Turn based hasn't gotten old, if you think that is the reason so many rpgs are lackluster these days your very much mistaken. Developers are just failing to grasp how to make good RPGs like they used to in snes / ps1 days. It's sad to say but snes RPGs like Chrono Trigger are better than alot of the trashy rpgs out now.

Why? What does handhelds and HDTV matter?

Turn-based design isn't just a choice based on limitations of the hardware, it's also a design choice.

Turn-based design isn't just a choice based on limitations of the hardware, it's also a design choice.

this is a matter of opinion, but playing on a next gen console with a full tv, you would expect to be able to take part in the action of a game, instead of chosing to attack. i am a fan of the Knights of the old republic series, but i think that type of combat just isnt appealing to people anymore, not when we have games like oblivion. it takes away the immersive atmosphere. look at blue dragon. just think if pokemon pearl was on a 360, do you think it would be as popular?

Again what does this generation do that's so different from previous generations, action RPGs have been available for generations. So why does this generation require that RPGs on the TV be different?

Pokemon on a system (besides the Xbox 360 where it would probably hinder sales in Japan) would most likely sell well any system it resides on.

Turn based and Real time just add different elements of gameplay, most RPG gamers probably woulden't like it if suddenly the only style of RPG was action, the only concept I consider tired when it comes to RPGs is random battles. Sometimes its pulled off well, but its one concept I would like to die out this generation.

I disagree.

I am not saying that turn based games shouldn't be on next gen systems, but that they are a unimpressive when compared with the action games that are being developed.

Yes but its like the argument of graphics and gameplay, is an impressive looking action game where you can mash a button non-stop but looks impressive, auotmatically better then a turn-based RPG which may not look as good but actually takes some skill?

I love both as long as they're implemented well. As for FFXII, I don't see why people call it real time. Sure, the enemies are fought on the map, but there's still a delay you have to wait for when executing commands. It's more of a hybrid if you ask me.

i dont see how kingdom hearts 2 was great. in all honesty it was too easy and boring. if they're going to make real time RPG's, they better make sure it isn't just button mashing without any strategy whatsoever.
