Turns out Hogwarts Legacy PC specs are far demanding then we thought!

At first, they weren't much to handle until now that is according to Avalanche Software: Hogwarts Legacy full PC specs are out

Minimum:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 (3.3 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 1400 (3.2 GHz)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4GB or AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB
  • DirectX Version: DX 12
  • Storage: 85GB HDD
  • Notes: SSD (Preferred), HDD (Supported), 720p/30 FPS, Low-Quality Settings

Recommended/High Specs:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-8700 (3.2 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (3.6 GHz)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or INTEL Arc A770
  • DirectX Version: DX 12
  • Storage: 85GB SSD
  • Notes: SSD, 1080p/60 FPS, High-Quality Settings

Ultra Specs:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K (3.80 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (3.80 GHz)
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT
  • DirectX Version: DX 12
  • Storage: 85GB SSD
  • Notes: SSD, 1440p / 60FPS, Ultra-Quality Settings

Ultra 4K specs:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 10
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K (3.80 GHz) or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (3.80 GHz)
  • RAM: 32GB
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
  • DirectX Version: DX 12
  • Storage: 85GB SSD
  • Notes: SSD, 2160p / 60FPS, Ultra-Quality Settings

32GB Ram once again proving to be the norm over 16GB Ram as we have seen for Returnal's spec. I feel if Hogwarts Legacy utilized UE5 instead of UE4 which the software DX12 RT (like in the recent Fortnite update) would’ve seen much better RT performance on AMD GPUs as well...maybe this may be an update later?

But overall should be a great-looking title that is getting the WOW factor on a major Harry Potter AAA game we've seen so far and hope we do get shader caching to boost game enjoyment rather than on-the-fly rendering popouts. I think the 3090 Ti recommended for 4k is accurate as well for Radeon RX 7900 XT since it can handle RT but is not as powerful as the 3000 series.

(I'm only speculating. Hogwarts Legacy might have RT if they're asking for a beefy GPU recommend)

Yeah I feel 32GB is a lot, 16GB has become standard and I didn't really expect an increase;

Now both Returnal and this are asking additional system memory so it seems like I'll be slotting in two additional sticks.

It's a demanding graphical game, RX 7900 XT is better than the 2000 series but not the 3000 series, but as you've mentioned it should be a powerful looking game, and remember we could always make reshade mods.

Funny enough, once I heard Returnal needed 32GB Ram, I just upgrade from 16GB to 32GB Ram a week ago as DDR4 Ram is far cheaper, especially 32GB assuming you are still with DDR4 that is.

I kinda believe that too, I'm interested to see some tests with 16gb vs 32gb.

When I heard Returnal will require 32GB I was like: oh snap, maybe TLOU part 1 will require it too and more and more current gen games will need it.

You're right another 16gb is pretty cheap (the price of one game) and I found the exact same set with the exact same Mhz and clock rates. I guess I'll upgrade soon :)

@masterkiller103: what are you smoking the 7900xt not better than 3000 series?

It’s beat by the 3080 ti at 4K RT but wins everywhere else. And yeah the 3090 will beat it but it’s also much more expensive.

I wouldn't really consider running at Ultra settings on a nearly five year old graphics card (2080 Ti) all that demanding, honestly.

Minimum specs aren’t bad at all, old quad cores and budget GPUs from 2015/16? Should run on the steam deck barring any stupid launcher or unreal engine stutter issues. That 85GB install size though… what a hog(warts).

That's unfortunate for the average PC gamer. According to the recent "Steam Hardware & Software Survey", the majority of PC gamers are gaming on lower specs than the current gen consoles.

Perhaps a reason why those AAA devs/pubs that DF pointed out the other day make PC port optimization of their games a lower priority and often turn out to be a "mess" at launch is because they know that the player population for games requiring such high specs is very small compared to consoles.

Min specs run on almost ten year old hardware (GTX 9xx series released on 2014)

Recommended specs run on 5+ year old hardware (GTX 10xx series released in 2016)

I mean, I feel for people that are running on ancient computers, but c'mon folks PC gaming is actually pretty forgiving as far as keeping up with the technology.

Unreal Engine 4

One of the most well optimized engines around;

Final Fantasy 7 remake, Stray, Gotham Knights.

Three of the best looking games of all time and they all run really well thanks to UE magic. Then there are the Gears games, Callisto Protocol and A Plague Tale as well. Though A Plague Tale is more of a fork of Unreal Engine and they probably utilise a lot of their own tech.

Yeah, big fan of Unreal engine. One good thing Epic puts out these days 😋

That's the question we should be asking, though: is this game demanding, or just poorly optimized?

The fact that my 1070 has lasted me 6-7 years makes me very happy. Odds are it will last me another 4, if AAA gaming continues to be as underwhelming as it is.

@uninspiredcup: sad that jk rowling turned out to be such a bigot. Personally I don't really like the trans stuff, but I'm not going to hate on somebody for their own choices. Got better stuff to do than hate.

JK rowling profiting from this is a real shame though. I will still get this game eventually once it's discounted, but hopefully they make a clone of the Harry Potter series and cut out jk rowling completely.

The biggest problem with this game is not that JK Rowling is a TERF. It is that the game just looks boring as all hell. Like they put every bit of AAA banality and condensed it into one steaming pile of mediocrity.

@Maroxad: yes, I'm not really a connoisseur of games, I'm simplistic like ghosts. For me the charm is in playing a 4k open world harry Potter game. I could care less if it sticks to the formula, as long as it nails that formula, then its fine. This is a series I loved as a kid, and JK Rowling the first author I really admired. The lure sure is tempting. Though I probably won't be getting this at launch. I have tons of games on the back burner.

That would make sense but folks would just jumped to poorly optimized just cause. "This game is running like crap on my ancient relic, it is poorly optimized."😂

Still not getting the game until a year has past.

There is zero chance of this being the case. Games weren't even using 16gb (far from it in most cases), and you're telling me that all of a sudden they require more than twice the amount of ram WHEN NOTHING HAS IMPROVED in the last couple of years? The game isn't even more impressive than RDR2, and i recall rdr2 taking like 10gb? When the game launches, i will make a thread about this being some real bs as it'll be shown through tests on youtube.

But that + "Harry Potter" is all you need to sell millions. Pretty sad that HP fans don't want something better, but it's not like I personally care about the franchise.

Maybe they're just listing high specs as a mean brute force the shader compilation issues rather than require users spend 15 minutes doing so before launching the game.

I could had bought incorrectly priced ddr5 7200 cl36 2x16 for $180, now it's back up to $280. Not to upset no guarantee I could get XMP working at 7200 and Newegg might have canceled the order.

One more reason why PC gaming is starting to become a joke nowadays. Nobody wants to spend $5000 just to play a Harry Potter game. No wonder more people are buying consoles just to bypass all this annoyance.

I agree the PS5 and Xbox Series X only have 16GB RAM and that RAM is shared between the GPU and CPU, not to mention the total of usuable RAM is even less since part of the RAM is reserved for the OS and background apps seeing as the Xbox Series X only has 13.5GB usuable. 16GB RAM and mid range GPUs such as the RTX 3060 12GB and RX 6600 XT 8GB should be more than enough memory for games.

8GB system RAM was more than enough for playing last gen games so why do we suddenly need 4 times the amount when the consoles have only doubled in the amount of RAM they use all together.

Wouldn't want a harry potter game even if it was free can't believe its so hyped
