French Ubisoft staff strike over RTO mandate amid slumping sales

Some of the 470 employees at the video production company Ubisoft gather during a strike in Montpellier, southern France.

Workers at video game giant Ubisoft began three days of strike action in France on Tuesday in a dispute over home working and pay, hitting a firm already struggling with poor sales and a collapsing share price.

Titles such as “Star Wars Outlaws”, “Skull and Bones” and the new episode of “Prince of Persia” have failed to impress, and the company spooked investors by delaying the latest release of the “Assassin’s Creed” franchise to next year.

The value of Ubisoft shares has collapsed by more than 40 percent since the beginning of the year, touching their lowest level in 10 years in September.

This week’s strike, caused by a September message from management insisting on a return to three days working in the office for all staff worldwide, follows on from another walkout in February when hundreds in France joined a dispute over pay.

Unions said they had received no response to the grievances aired in February and that the September message was “the straw that broke the camel’s back”.

Clement Montigny of the STJV union told AFP the move to in-person working broke promises made to staff and “calls into question the way they organise their lives”.

Ubisoft managers told staff in an email that returning to the office was vital to foster creativity, and promised to give workers time to adjust.

AFP saw around 50 people on a picket line in Montpellier, with Ubisoft offices in Annecy, Lyon and Paris also expected to be affected.

Imagine wanting to work for Ubisoft. Even with the know-how, I'd rather not get into the business at all and choose physical labor over a company so creatively bankrupt.

Have they already been going back to the office or are the doing this before having gone? I dunno, there may be something to the whole, "get to the WORK building for work," that could potentially help with the games quality. I know I can't work from home, I would be too distracted, and enjoy going to a "specific" workplace to get my work done. Plus separating the workplace from home is a must for me.

Apparently they want to do it at home comfy womfy.

This is what happens when you breed a culture of soft far-left victimhood. Some right-wingness needs to exist to provide balance to stop these radical leftists turning the world into cucksville.

Good on you that you seem to think developers should suffer just because their views/games don't align with how you think.

Meanwhile The Lost Crown and SW: Outlaws are two of the best games I've played in the past 12 months, and I'm willing to bet you haven't played those games nor given them a fair chance. Just watched anti-DEI youtube videos about character appearances.

Eh. Striking and protesting is kind of a French cultural thing. When I visited France, whole lines of the Metro were shut down from strikes every single day, and people just shrugged and accepted it.

It's practically a ritual to them. The Spanish have their Siestas, American Southerners wave their guns around, Gammons beat their wives, and the French strike and protest.

These are not the underdogs, the rebel alliance.

They are stormtroopers who can't shoot properly.

When the Deathstar blew up, young Luke Skywalker didn't contemplate the space nazi janitor. He bloweded it up and went "wooo" and "hee haw", and "eeee" and then it was blown up again.

you'll like this why i quit my dream job at ubisoft. it's pretty obvious after reading that why their games feel like built by committee soulless slop

...For me, this is the root of all issues on AAA games: big teams. Too many people. Syndicate was created with the collaboration of about 10 studios in the world. This is 24 hour non-stop development. When people go to sleep in one studio, it’s morning in another one...

...On large scale projects, good communication is – simply put – just impossible. How do you get the right message to the right people? You can’t communicate everything to everyone, there’s just too much information...

...The higher you go up the ladder, the less concrete impact you have on the game. You’re either a grunt who works on a tiny, tiny part of the game (“See that lamppost? I put it there!”), or you’re a high-level director who writes emails and goes to meetings (“See that road full of lampposts? I approved that.”). Both positions suck for different reasons.

Haha, this is hillarious . They went all in DEI initiatives several years ago and this is the result. You can't even critique these types without getting a harassment charge and the simple act of asking people to go back to work causes them to go on strike.

This is what happens when you let to many foxes in the hen house... this company is screwed and western game developers are going to learn they will gladly outsource your job to China and AI.

Wait, are you guys really equating WFH to refusing to work or to show up for work? I know it's SW but the dumb on display here is even embarrassing for SW standards. WFH/remote allows a lot of people to move to smaller towns/move close to their family/friends, just move to a cheaper place to live etc. etc. and many of them did precisely that, sold/ended their lease in the city and moved someplace else because the companies assured them that remote is good.

Funny thing is Remote work didn't drop any productivity and companies actually had lower costs because of it but now that the they want to lay off workers without severance pay, forcing them to come to office knowing it would be impossible for many of them is the reason or another reason is commercial real state investments are being sh*t, so force the poor guys.

Damn, Ubisoft, get your shit in order.

I'd start with laying off half the C-suite folks and most of the finance people. And ALL of the people that thought adding NFT's to games was a smart decision.

And look, I'm not in game development so definitely take this with a grain or two of salt, but FFS how hard is it to take EXISTING IP's that everyone loves, a substantial budget and infrastructure, and make some god damn games!??!?!

Stop trying to cash in on trends and gimmicks and stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just make some games. They don't even have to be great games; good enough is good enough.

Harrumph! I say.

I know Chinese people and eat their food (prawn crackers), they are very hard workers, they work ungodly amounts and learn this work ethic from a young age.

If these disgusting wokesters done even 10% of the hard graft the Chinese are taught they would have a breakdown.

It would be best for Ubisoft if all their French staff was replaced by the CCP. Lazy wokesters with their pink hair and first world problem victim complexes.

In China do that shit, act like a big bitch baby just lose social credit for being a stupid whiny asshole.

Pretty much.

The only rational argument against it in many situations is that the employer is falling prey to "sunk cost fallacy" and has a large lease on an office building, and they don't want to move to a smaller one or terminate their lease.

@last_lap said:

5 days a week is ridiculous though. Sorry not sorry, but we need to have this conversation as a worldwide workforce to get away from this standard.

I worked four ten-hour days for over a decade and it was glorious, now I'm back to five eight-hour days and it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks OMFG. I also feel less productive as well.

People are working harder than ever and getting paid as little as ever; if we can't earn what we are owed, then we need to take it back in other ways. In this case, we need to take back our time and location.

Obviously not all jobs can be WFH, but I think any that can be should be accommodated.

Actually the games have been pretty great for the most part. It's not the individual developers' fault they were mismanaged, mismarketed, and so forth.

It's their business practices that sucks

@mrbojangles25: I just think it's funny that they are striking about wanting to work from home when the quality of their product has gone down the shitter. The haven't been "Pretty great" lately. Prince of persia was the only game I'd call great and it was thier budget game. Star wars, Skull and bones, Avatar, flop flop flop bland bland bland. And these thing had omega crazy multimillion dollar budgets thrown behind em.

The company stock is nose diving and investors are yelling to sell to Tencent.

But yeah.. go ahead and go on strike right now over not being able to **** off while working at home as your employer circles the drain lol not a surprise that they don't want to continue the working from home strategy. Thier quality control is garbage.

Dude, I work 6 days a week, 45hrs (have done so for the past 4yrs) I have no sympathy for you. Nor any sympathy for those lazy arse Ubi workers who are crying because their boss wants them in the office 3 days a week.

If you live in a country where people are working harder and getting paid as little as ever then they need to find a better job (or country for that matter) where they and their time are paid properly.

Not asking for sympathy and don't play the martyr card, either; we've all been at the "rabble rabble I've worked 6 days a week, so can you!" grumpy phase at some point in our lives.

The trick is gaining empathy, not indifference, from that experience.

In either case, I don't want your sympathy, but you sure have mine.

Also 6 days, 45 hours? That's a really inefficient job. What are you doing that can't be done in 4-5 days and 45 hours? I mean...don't you want a full weekend?

Well that's the thing, though, they have worked hard and the company is tanking. I feel like that's sort of the best time to strike, or at least an appropriate time to strike. They're all going to be let go sooner or later, might as well stick the shiv into the company while they're weak and still have some money lol.

These people work hard, put in their time and use their talent, and through really shitty management their games sell poorly.

We can disagree over the subjective opinions of their games, but in the past few years they've released:

-Avatar. Great game.

-SW Outlaws. Fun, decent game.

-AC Mirage. A pretty good AC game. Not the best, but a return to form in some respects to their roots.

-Far Cry 6 was pretty good.

-Immortals: Fenyx Rising was also great.

-The Division 2 is arguably one of the better examples of a loot-n-shoot game. Much better than Destiny, Borderlands, etc.

Yes, I know they tend to just crank out the same schlock but it's good schlock :P

Just bad leadership, plain and simple. Blaming workers and work-from-home is a copout. How much more money would they have made if they had their games on Steam day one? How much money would they make if they sold whole games instead of a Uplay sub? I've played all their games over the past 5+ years for about 60 dollars (a half year of subscriptions, essentially). That's hundreds of dollars of lost revenue (thousands, really, since I get access to the deluxe versions of their games with a sub) because they don't want to sell copies if it means using Steam.

This is a management problem, and a capitalism problem.

Sincerely

Comrade Bojangles

Funny thing is Remote work didn't drop any productivity and companies actually had lower costs because of it but now that the they want to lay off workers without severance pay, forcing them to come to office knowing it would be impossible for many of them is the reason or another reason is commercial real state investments are being sh*t, so force the poor guys.

yeah this. if i'd taken a fully remote job living hundreds of miles away from the office, then been told later actually we need you in the office 3 times a week, i'd be upset too.

sounds like ubi are trying to frame it as a way to reignite creativity and quality but really it's probably cos they've lost shit loads of money, need to cut a large % of the work force to make them more lean and attractive for a buy out, and don't want to pay millions in redundancy. force everyone back to the office so people quit, meaning ubi don't pay a penny. big corp shitty tactics 101

Crying because they're being asked to go into their workplace 3 days a week 🤦‍♂️

I agree, all I see is lazy bastards who don't make very good games, working under the thumb (willingly) of a terrible company only caring when eh terribleness is pointed at them.

Why should I care about you? Little shits. Get up off your arse and do something.

@mrbojangles25: @Macutchi:

Yes and I'm speaking from experience, in my previous company, many people moved with their families to small towns/cities and bought properties there because company switched to 100% remote and the funny thing is all the executives back then were gloating how good remote work is for employees mental health etc. (in reality they were saving a sh*t ton of money in office expenses) while productivity increased. Once the share priced took a nose dive last year, they implemented 2 days a week in office policy to improve "collaboration" without showing any metrics etc. And there aren't any metrics because it came directly from the C-Suite, no one below them knew about it, even the Presidents and VPs were taken by surprise. Insult to the injury C-Suite was exempted from this policy because one of them work from a different city and one from a completely different country.

Not just that, I don't should I laugh or cry reading the comments and justification about "I work 100 hours a week and so should you." Just because you had it sh*tty doesn't mean everyone else also has to suffer. Boggles my mind that instead of joining their fellow working class people to improve working conditions, they side with people responsible for their sh*tty state in the first place. No they have to beat down other people to lower the standards across the board instead of improving and fighting to improve theirs.

Well, there must be some good reasons why Ubi employees don't want to go to the office, besides the convenience of remote work.

"Bu-bu-but they've made some of my favorite games!"

Well, good luck supporting one of the most toxic companies in the industry filled with sexual harassment, discrimination and labor exploitation.

Last_lap does come across as miserable, however, alot of this is simply being soft where they don't want to try. Make a leisurely space rather than a workspace.

When join the army that level of discipline makes you a better stronger person. They do not adopt this attitude because it's "lazy bastard syndrome" and creates weak people. Armed forced ofc, being a job. (which wouldn't know about)

If was to hire someone, would I want some pink haired French person who wants to sit on his ass and drink cola and play COD between working 2-3 hours a day on his comfy womfy cushion? Crying every 20 seconds about some inane shit? Or would I want last_Last ready to work 6 days a week to earn his graft. No questions asked.

Work is competitive. And should be.

Just get rid of all these people are bring in hard working Chinese people, who will appreciate it and actively make them look bad.

The truth (aside from the false claim they make good games), sadly the gaming community at large, public, are both ignorant and don't care. They simply want product.

Alas, not liking them for being lazy, doesn't equate to liking Ubisoft as a company.

On top of that these people, and similar ilk, have happily went along with shit like lootboxes aimed at children, seedy mobile games, exploitive microtransations etc..

They don't care about us. In fact, they seem happy to harm us, our children, the little ones.

Overall, they are evil too, pleb level evil getting cucked by the bigger bad. Crying about it. With cute little signs.

They chose to be part of this corrupt decadent system. Happy when it's us, not so happy when it's them.

This is not a Live Aid event. No matter how hard to try to puff it up.

As for bringing people, I'm quite sure people like IP would be: "Zey rrr taking our jobbz".

Cup is right. These employees are bums and made garbage which led to the company loosing lots of money. Now they want to strike as the company is actively dying from making poor products.

There is blame to go around, not just from leadership but the bums making garbage from home.

But yes we can blame leadership too, they hired these bums in the first place. They wanted to hire the fat pink haired French man. They got the bad quality product from them, lost money, and now the fat pink haired French men is going to sue them and say they tickled his butthole.

They hired leeches that never gave af about making a good product. They just wanted the 6 figures and to jerk off at home all day.

So in a way, yes it's leadership fault, it's managments fault for hiring the pink haired leeches in the first place.

Ah yes, the executives at companies willingly and knowingly hire lazy people who doesn't do their jobs and paying them hundreds of millions, probably billions in salaries. It's not like these bean counters look for a cent to be saved and ways to screw their workers. Please do tell me when was the last time anyone of you had a boss that did that and didn't set targets for you.
