Not sure if already posted but i found this interesting.

Ubisoft confirms that they wont be making any random games anymore and that every game they make and will make from now on will be turned into franchises, it is too expensive to create new games without having them turned into franchises says Ubisoft.

This is both good and bad in my opinion, if we will see Beyond good and Evil 2 it will mean we'll get 3 and 4 but at the same time it might mean we wont ever see beyond good and evil 2

Ubisoft is a for-profit business, if they don't make games that will sell they will not make any games. Same goes for every other video game developer and producer in the industry.

Ive come to both love and hate Ubi... I love MANY of their franchises and for a bug publisher I find most of their franchises quite pallatable... but when they begin the process of sequelizing those franchises to death it drives me nuts... When will these companies look at franshices as something to nurture instead of something to bleed dry?  Mark my words, Ubi is looking at Watchdogs right now as the yearly sequel franchise they will rape sideways in gen 8.  Id bet my house on it.

I'm really starting to go off them lately, they're making good games and then forcing them into open world shells to look like better value for money, when it's mostly just unnecessary padding. I can't think of a more boring open world than Assassins Creed 3, an empty blank wilderness with a bit of boring guff to kill every few minutes, it never felt alive and it never felt interesting.

Ubi is my favorite 3rd party publisher this gen. Far Cry 3 was amazing as well as Assassin's Creed up to Brotherhood (after Brotherhood, the games got bad). Not to mention their smaller other titles, like Outland (I think it's called that) From Dust, and Raman Origins, which is amazing. Also, future titles like Watch Dogs and The Division look outstanding.

That being said, if Assassin's Creed is any indication, they have proven they can't keep a series interesting when doing yearly instalments. I don't think anyone has proven they can do that, though.

It makes sense, since games nowadays are nothing but marketing, and to play with the big boys (AAA) you need to invest in such, it's only natural that you focus your efforts in something that is growing roots instead of having to build a foundation each time...

I mean just look at Star wars, there's even crossovers with angry birds... if a franchise is well known it will sell despite it's quality (thus we have movies adaptations to games).

As for my opinion, it really deppends. If it's a franchise i enjoy i have no problems with sequels (as long as they are well made and with good time spaces between them), unfortunately for me i'm not really into ubisoft's franchises, only The Division is on my radar atm.

UBI SOFT. Rehashes Confirmed.

"Lets create a game, and reproduce it with slight changes and new levels on the same engine, We WILL MAKE MILLIONS".

Sounds like Activision's strategy.

Not to be pedantic, but I don't think Double Fine have ever made a sequel, even though it'd probably be in their best interests to do so.

I don't see how this is a bad thing. They just need to tone down the yearly releases. If you have like 6 franchises on a 2 year cycle, youre still getting 3 of them out each year. Ive never suffered from franchise fatigue before until Assasins creed.

As long as they keep dishing out great games, like they have been for some years now, I don't care if it's a new IP or a sequel or a prequel or a frigging spinoff.

This just means we know any ubisoft game from here on out will have a lame ending.

Why bother buying  (insert game here) 1

if we know we will not reach any conclusion until (insert game here) 4,5,6

Its okay if the story is imaginative and lends itselft naturally to progressive titles. But EVERY new game simply doesnt need to be strung out into 4 titles. It wreaks of a lack of imagination.

I have no idea what Ubisoft is even talking about here. THey won't make games unless it can be turned into a franchise. Uhm...okay. So I guess they won't be trying to remake Tetris or something. Didn't know that was in their plans originally, but whatever.

Seriously, what games CAN'T be turned into a franchise if they are successful enough? Hell, even unsuccessful games could be part of a franchise concept. It seems like what they are saying is they won't be making small, low budget games. But even then, big budget games are the ones that are "too expensive" and have the biggest risk.

So what...they won't make any games that aren't part of a series? When has a big budget, successful title ever NOT had a sequal and be made into a series/franchise.

Yes, every company is in business to make money. That doesnt excuse trying to make new games though as you seem to think it does. Unless of course you want every game developer to be like ubisoft, nintendo and activision where they only try to make games they can release annual releases on and never give a one shot game a chance like the last of us.

Speaking of last of us, that was a one time game that didnt have a franchise behind it and its been selling like gangbusters. Dishonored. The walking dead. Minecraft. All really great games that came out despite not being part of a franchise. Even great game franchises had to start with an original game.

If ubisoft never made a new game then they will never find a new franchise.

All this tells me is ubisoft is only about money. They dont want to make great games. If they actually wanted to make great games they would continue making new ones and try to insure they were actually of good quality.

i'm afraid so

I put it into babelfish and these alternate translations came out:

"Regardless of critical and fan reception, if a title does not meet corporate sales expectations it will not receive a sequel."

and

"We will only create games to target the masses. Our focus groups show that copying other popular titles is the most effective manner to acheive this."

Win-win for gamers. Variation is the death of creativity.

I don't see how this is a GOOD thing. Less new games, more rehashes. How can anyone see that as a positive?

Then again, Ubisoft has been doing this for awhile anyway. So really they are just confirming that they will just keep doing the same thing (Assassins Creed, Tom Clancy, Rayman... and now add Watch Dogs... and probably bring back Prince of Persia).

Is'nt this old?

And what will the entire industry do, when established IPs grow stale? Release new IPs, which we've been "raised" to disregard?

I think it only makes sense that a publisher like Ubisoft would only make a game with the kind of budget they are accustomed to if they think they can turn it into a franchise. I just wish that they would put about 10 franchises on rotation so we don't see great franchises like Assassin's Creed ruined by repetition.

Ubisoft generally puts alot of effort into their worlds and IPs, no point in spending 50 millionish on a game and not reusing the IP again.
