Good news, Ubisoft is in trouble again.

185 people are now jobless, which would usually be sad.

Usually.

Ubisoft announces studio closure as it lays off 185 staff

Leamington closed as "targeted restructurings" hit other teams.

Ubisoft is set to close its UK studio based in Leamington, as it sheds 185 jobs across the business.

Leamington's team of around 50 people will be disbanded, while other Ubisoft offices in Düsseldorf (formerly Blue Byte), Stockholm and the Newcastle-based Ubisoft Reflections will be downsized.

"As part of our ongoing efforts to prioritise projects and reduce costs that ensure long-term stability at Ubisoft, we have announced targeted restructurings at Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Reflections and the permanent closure of Ubisoft Leamington site," a Ubisoft spokesperson said in a statement to Eurogamer.

"Unfortunately, this should impact 185 employees overall. We are deeply grateful for their contributions and are committed to supporting them through this transition."

Founded in 2002 as FreeStyleGames by a group of former Rare and Codemasters veterans, Ubisoft Leamington had most recently worked as a support studio on the Tom Clancy's The Division series, and also assisted development on games such as Star Wars Outlaws, Skull and Bones and Far Cry 5.

This was initiable and unavoidable due to Ubisoft overspend Star Wars: Outlaws and when it launched with bugs and mostly for false advertising, the game itself crashed and burn on their face, and even AC Shadows is another overspending project and having 2 delays really hurt Ubisoft as that cost extra money for those 2 delays they had.

Let this be a lesson to Ubisoft, stop overspending and stop overpromising your games. Not every game needs to be bloated open-world games. At least EA is smart enough to not do what Ubisoft is doing now...sort of but EA is still crap.

Truly sorry to hear those 185 staff layoffs. I really hope those effected will find other jobs asap. I really HATE seeing layoffs😔

The people who sign up for this know they are signing for a scummy company for their own sake at the expense of you.

They should be afforded the same empathy, none.

Great news. More developers should be laid off because they are evil and gaming needs to die.

Your sig is accurate, indeed you do mention Ubisoft more than I ever cared to read about them.

Never really clicked with many Ubisoft games, they seem to.. at least at one point have a formula that catered towards a healthy fandom with its Assassins Creed games. I generally sum them up as open world enjoyers.

Older games saw some praise too with Tom Clancy games and PoP; generally beloved and seemed cool from an outside perspective, with some random niche stuff thrown in along the years (recall a somewhat beloved Arena Fighting game around 2016)

Only Ubisoft game think I played and generally liked was Scott Pilgrim. Ubisoft soft-locked the re-release behind a Ubisoft account (which even now is the case). That's my main gripe with them honestly. Word suggests the company is managed by idiots, that doesn't shock me with the above corporate moves.

The old Tom Clancy games to this day are unique. Nothing, even games in the same genre have played like them since.

Ubisoft stripped all that away to make a shitty Gears Of War game, Americanized movie slop, then open-world busy slop.

Completely bastardized something truly unique and special. Of course game journos were jerking off to them, if could be bothered would pull out some lulzy quotes from Gamespot but it's late and i'd rather look at some shit on jjgirls.

@uninspiredcup: It's a shame corpos keep feeling the need to trace a trending game that sadly doesn't have any room to go anywhere, Gears of War is simply a meaty cover TPS and saw many clones, while I really enjoy Gears 2 it wasn't a series with enough substance to create its own sub-genre.

The only interesting 'Gears clone' that arguably did it better than the original was Vanquish, and that's because it had unique ideas and frankly far superior gameplay. Gears clones are not terrible, they're just very one-note and painfully mid, just like so many other games that clone trending success.

Don't worry about Ubisoft. They were one of the companies that invested heavily into NFTs. They're going to soar past other publishers. Not only that but they used energy efficient proof of stake blockchain technology, so they are already ahead of the curve in minimizing overhead while maximizing the benefits for the consumer.

This is what happens when you focus only on profit and growth.

And, yes: I know Ubisoft is a company and companies need to make money, but companies need to make a worthwhile product first and foremost. A good product will sell itself, and a well-run company will be able to stay in business because of it.

If not, then that company is poorly managed. Which is exactly what's going on here.

These developers aren't to blame, the corporation and management is. Ubisoft has actually managed to release some fun games and it's the developers doing that despite Ubisoft's attempts to prevent it. If they'd just manage it properly.
