It's not that I don't want to hear their thoughts and comments, but the level of overhype for some titles is rediculous. It gets to the point where good titles are ruined for some gamers because they expect more from the game that was possible. Fable, Fable 2, and Protoytpe were all examples of this.
On the other turn of the coin, what's wrong with taking a hobby seriously and then talking about what developers are doing? It's part of the fun of being a gamer, and the more the issues are discussed the higher the chances word will get to developers of what we'd like to see in future games.
As far as the sports title argument goes, yearly releases basicaly just milk more money out of gamers in general. Many of the updates provided could easily be delivered via DLC, including the rosters and game engine enhancements. I can understand having to purchase a new game when new engines are provided for the game, but this yearly purchase with minor additions doesn't really cut it anymore.

choosing to buy into 'overhype' is your own choice. personally, prototype and fable 2 were not 'ruined' for me by developers talking about their games. ive had so much fun with prototype its almost embarassing to admit the time i put into it on some days. i think id be foolish not to see somebody hype their own commercial product.
the fault with taking gaming too seriously is when people get to throwing around impossible expectations (something gamers are way more responsible for than devs), expectations of miraculous 'innovation', etc. it gets to a point where it reminds me of 'foodies'. so many 'gamers' seem like they cant even enjoy a game anymore, theyre too wrapped up in being a self styled expert and critic to appreciate anything for what it is. interestingly the aforementioned prototype is a great example of this. it seemed awfully harshly critiqued to me for a game that is at its core a bit sloppy, but intensely fun. why? because it wasnt some 'masterpiece', or a technical marvel. imo part of the reason so many people burned it is because it lacked the pretention of trying to innovate and just did want i, and presumably the developers, wanted.
i am not saying its a sin to hold high standards, or to have high expections. but people are getting silly about it. and the entitlement mentality (L4D2) is also getting out of hand. people who complain about dlc so much always have the very clear option of just not paying for it; it only exists because somewhere out there people are shelling out. i know so many who have complained about dlc own some of that stuff that makes people mad, be it horse armor or sfiv outfits.
my whole thing is if people dont want to see developers talk about their games/technical limitations/etc. then that should be a two way street with their audience.
as far as the sports games go, its clear a new game per year obviously it does 'cut it', since people are still buying them. nhl, madden etc. sell enormous numbers of copies per year. i suppose hypothetically these things could be dlc, but you can make that argument for just about anything anymore (see: L4D2, most fps(X) sequels).
