It sold as well as it could have on the Wii U's install base, what did you expect? For it to sell a million or something?
Plus Mario games have long legs, this will go on to sell fairly well in the end. Like all other Nintendo haters, you just jumped the gun.
I know there are some people trying to put a positive spin on this but, both debuts for FF and Mario are very poor.
Although I do agree that these sales are s***, this is old news:

New Super Mario Bros U sold 200,000
Mario 3D World sold half that amount.
How can that be?
Are you an idiot? 2D Mario always outsells 3D Mario
That's what Nintendo gets for catering exclusively to the Wii U audience.
Should have been multiplat
Then everything should have been multiplat.
I think Nintendo should think about going multiplatform, or else their future doesn't look very bright

The "NEW" series always outsell's the 3D mario series.
Shame because it really is an amazing game. Been playing it's 4 player co-op and it's fun as hell, also quite a lot harder than I expected.
Nintendo is dead and no fresh coat of paint on Mario will change that.
So many dumb people hahaha

Yes because those that actually owned a Nes should want to see Mario be remade for the last 30 years and not want something more. I would be the first to scream from the rooftops if Nintendo had a great new IP. Unfortunately they don't. Can you imagine Disney putting out a different Mickey Movie every 5-7 years instead of new material like Toy Story, Cars, Wall E, or Incredibles?
Some of us expect more of Nintendo you don't.
Because there's been no new Nintendo IPs since the NES. Right.

There are plenty of IP's already that people are waiting for, like F-Zero, Starfox, Earthbound, etc. If there's anything Nintendo has an abundance of, it's IP's.
man i love nintendo and love nintendo games. but nintendo ****ed up big time. they could have really gained alot of ground this gen. but hte problem is they lack games. true there is alot of great game coming for it but the problem is that there are no multiplates.
i am not complaining i am catching up on wii games that i hav misssed waiting for their new nintendo game to release. i already 5 stared mario 3d world.
but nintendo has weird tactics it is too late to say 2013 was a drought they effd up. but why are their no games on the eshop. why dont nintendo release all there nes, snes, sega genesis, neogeo, n64 and gamecube game on the eshop. instead they release 1 old nes game every week. they should release the whole bunch at one time.
also there is a reason why games are being delayed like donkey kon, it is because they have nothing for 2014 exceot for what they announced and i bet some will be delayed also. they hav a great lineup but no 3rd party. they should hav used this opportunity to release bayonetta, donkey kong and mario kart along with mario3d world in order to gain ground. but with 3d world only i dont think people will be interested.
also i love 3d world it is an amazing coop game but it is not a full 3d mario adventure. it is an amazing arcady coop mario game and people where hoping for a ful fledged mario 3d adventure game.
i really hope nintendo start releasing more games, also the very few virtua console game are pretty expensive, thye should be a dollar max each.
Good now maybe Nintendo will start creating new IPs and learn that nothing lasts forever. It will be a good lesson for nostalgic sheep.

Tell that to the legions of James Bond fans after twenty something movies. I'm sorry, but if film franchises like Bond can last long, why can't game franchises?
Oh and I'm tired of the "sheep being nostalgic for supporting their favorite franchise" argument, as that thread pointed out, it is filled with irony at it's finest.

Oh man you really are an idiot.
Sheep damage control is the best damage control. Mario should have moved units. "Bu-bu-bu-but it has a small install base!" is a weak excuse for a main Mario game.
I hope it sells well in the end. After playing the game for over 17 hours, I've gotten to the point where I can confidently say that this game does everything necessary to make it the best 3D platformer ever created. They managed to trump Super Mario Galaxy 2 with a better focus on quality and precise level design that was somewhat lacking in the Galaxy games as crazy and creative as they were.

Then why did Sunshine sell nearly 300k on a similar install base? I've seen this ridiculous excuse way too many times today. A 100k opening for a Mario game is pretty sad no matter what excuse people try to come up with.
It's not surprising that Pikmin sold better than 3d Mario in a country where handhelds dominate. It's not on the 3ds. The biggest competitor the Wii U has in my opinion. Why buy a Wii U and 3d world if you can buy a 3ds and something similar on it?

yup and all the sony fanboys are crying for crash bandicoot
and xboners are gushing over killer instinct..lol
To put some positivity to this... the install base is low and 3D Mario never really sold as well as 2D Mario software. Hardware sale increases has also been historically low on all 3D Mario games when it comes to Japan, and this number keeps in line with the Galaxies. I do know SM64 sold more hardware, but I consider the first 3D Mario kind of an outlier. Sunshine I'm not totally sure about in this regard.
It's a bummer that this didn't sell well though. The WiiU might be undesirable to some consumers, but the existing ones should have jumped on that shit as soon as it dropped. I mean wtf Japan?
Go third party Nintendo for f* sake. You suck at making hardware, so don't do it. You are amazing at making games, make more of them.
@Sushiglutton: I have this nagging feeling that they actually aren't half bad at making hardware, but they just love to cram gimmicks into them for whatever reason. It must be a whole lot of optimism but I swear they could get it right if they stop with some of the stupid shit. I mean they probably got a ton of professional designers and engineers just like Sony and Microsoft, but its just this philosophy of being innovative and different that hampers some of their expertise (while admittedly increasing their creativity in some areas).
I'm okay with some innovation like Miiverse, but they need to get back to basics on all fronts of their hardware.

What, and this would fare any better on any other console? Considering Final Fantasy outsold it, I doubt it.
Nintendo fans are the lulziest. So attached to a piece of bad hardware.
Nuws flash: if Nintendo was third party, you could play their games on a superior system with !such better support for games and nintendo would thrive..
'Oh noes I need gimmicky weak hardware to play the Zelda's n marioez'
