UK 360 sales leap 1000%

Microsoft has claimed that UK sales of Xbox 360 jumped 1000 per cent across all SKUs last weekend.

The week-on-week rise was driven by the launch of the Xbox 360 - a piece of hardware which left us very much impressed - as well as price cuts on the old Elite and Arcade models.

The Xbox 360 S has a RRP of £199 in the UK, while the Elite is selling for £149 and the Arcade unit £119.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Xbox EMEA boss Chris Lewis claimed an 84 per cent share of the hardware market from Friday - Sunday.

"[Over] this past weekend we shipped our 250GB new slimmer console that Don [Mattrick] showed at E3 and we've had a fabulous sales weekend," he said. "The UK went up 1000 per cent week-over-week with an 84 per cent market share.

"It's only a couple of days of sales, but it does further enforce the appetite that people have for the Xbox 360, and excitement for the 250GB slimmer, quieter version in Liquid Black."

GfK-ChartTrack told CVG earlier this week that opening weekend sales of the Xbox 360 S - which features one fan and built-in WiFi - were higher than those enjoyed by Sony's during the release windows of both its slim PS2 and PS3.

Microsoft yesterday announced a new, casual-friendly 4GB Xbox 360 S which comes in matte black for £149.99, which will be launched in August.

The 'new Arcade' system will eventually be bundled with motion control camera Kinect plus one game for £249.99.

Yes apparently it sold more than at launch. Slim rocks apparently. Wait till the Arcade S comes out. That should continue their momentum.

Oh wow it just now hit me whata sweet littlestrategy Microsoft has going here.

First the fire sale to eliminate inventory....huge sales.

Then the 250 GB ....huge sales

Then comes the Arcade Slim at $199 in August.....huge sales.

Then Halo: Reach in September.....huge sales.

Then Kinetic bundles in November.....and yes I'm betting huge sales there too.

Then finally, holiday sales.

They are going to dominate hardware sales from now until the end of the year in US and Europe. They have basically guaranteed themselves a big hardware sales spike every two months or less. I was wondering why they didn't bring out the Arcade Slim at the same time as the 250GB but looking at this it makes sense.

You'd be surprised how many people in the UK owned a PS3 and not an xbox 360. Glad the 360 is starting to sell better over here...did i say sell better? I meant kick total ass.

Yeah, right. Wii has won they can just cut their price to $149 and still make a great profit. Unfortunately Sony is going to end the gen solidly in last place unless something major happens.

I asked what a Microsoft sales thread had to do with Sony. Usually when a person says something like you did, they are trying to troll/start a flame war. So I asked you the said question to get to the bottom of your reasoning, to try and prevent any war.

I also read how Patcher was predicting a price cut for the 360 next year. I know Patcher is wrong a lot but that would be smart of MS> They get a huge boost from the slim and then the slim arcade,Then Halo, then Kinect, and next year do it all over again with a price cut.SilentlyMad

Impressive, although I have read a lot of people saying they will trade in or sell their old 360 and buy the new model. I wonder how many of these are genuine first purchases.

Why would you want exclusives when you already get the better version of all multiplats? Exclusives are nice but I loose in the end when I have to purchase multiple systems because of it. Yes I enjoy the game but I would have enjoyed it just as much on my PS3 versus my 360.

Man if Reach and black ops are marketed right, it's going to be an even more brutal holiday season for the competition of the 360.
