Not trying to downplay this bit of news, because it is an achievement, but who was gonna buy an 8 year old console (a 360, gross) when everybody knew that next gen was right around the corner?

Sony is so embarassed about PS3 sales in the U.S. that they won't even report them to the public anymore. Sales have been great for both PS4 and XB1. It means more developers will be hoping on board to make more games for these systems. That's still the most important thing. GAMES.

Is that why Sony announced that they send out 80 million after MS did a couple weeks apart and those were BOTH THEIR LATEST NUMBERS?

I'm sorry but this is not really that great of an achievement. Let's put this in proper perspective. Take the PS2, the most successful and highest selling console of ALL TIME, priced at $99 to $129 brand new at retailers by FY 2006. Guess what? It only managed to outsell the $429 Xbox 360 in 2006 by less than 4 million units worldwide. (Xbox 360 sold 10.4 million with the PS2 selling close to 14 million) Mind you, this is taking into consideration that the PS2 was available in 60+ more regions at the time and had far more hot system selling titles coming out than the 360 had in 2013. FYI, almost all of the 4 million sales gap in 2006 between the PS2 and Xbox 360 came from Europe (6 million PS2 sku sold vs Over 2 million Xbox 360 sku sold) Remember Europe was pretty much one of Sony's strongest performing regions at the time during the PS2's gen versus worst performing for Xbox brand.

Now compare that with the cheapest brand new Xbox 360 SKU in 2013 being $149 to $199 compared to a $399 Playstation 4. Granted the PS4 only had a few months, it's not completely inconceivable that this would happen in a region where Microsoft doesn't have the greatest track record with past consoles. When you look at worldwide sales, the sales gap becomes even less dramatic with the Xbox 360 probably outselling the PS4 worldwide for 2013. Compare that with the €499 Xbox one that sold 364k in UK in 2013 in the same time frame (1 extra week) as the €399 PS4. This means a €99 Xbox 360 only managed to outsell a €499 Xbox One by less than 100k units with 48 extra weeks of sales!! Again, this is not shocking stuff. A last generation console in its ending years is not going to perform sales wise up to par comparatively with new console with hot demand.

Back to scheduled programming folks!!!

TLDR; A brand new console outselling an 8 year old on its way out with dwindling demand in one of its weakest performing territories is not a big achievement, if not an achievement at all. It's like having a fresh middle school track kid outrun Usain Bolt in one lap after he's already ran 90+ laps at full capacity.

Getting a PS3 is a wise investment. Cheap. Great games. Free online. 500GB space.

Not in 2013 it wasn't, check the stats. Xbox 360 did a little over 13 million worldwide total for 2013. UK sales would've made up a whopping 4% of those sales in 2013 unless the 500k figure being sited is inaccurate. The source seems to be suspect and there are no other supporting pieces of evidence to corroborate this sales figure but let's just accept it as 100% fact for now. That 4% figure is a very weak figure comparing to previous years (10+ %) when that 2nd strongest performing region held true.

TLDR; Xbox 360 had a comparatively (to previous years) poor 2013 in UK sales. This is not out of the norm for a last generation console in its final years with new consoles coming out. That same sales trend applies even to sales juggernauts like the PS2 that saw similar subsequent sales slumps percentage wise in Europe in the latter years (6 million down to 3.8 millon to > 2 million) Mind you in sheer quantity, the PS2 was killing it and doing great for a console at its end but in percentage drops/growth, it was shrinking pretty fast in a short amount of time.

The PS2 outsold the xbox 360 for the first 2 years of its life,and almost does it on the 3rd year as well..
