Not all used games are $55, and i care more about my wallet than a giant corporation. This is why i bought a used car, i buy used movies, i get books at the library, and i bought a house from a homeowner rather than pay someone to build me a new one.
Oh i forgot, games are special and shouldn't be subject to the rules and pitfalls of the rest of the capitalist market.
...and?
as you said, that's fairly obvious.
and it's also fairly obvious that used games are usually better value for the consumer.

Nothing wrong with buying used games, it's just that alot of people complain about Online passes, and seem to ignore that the developers isn't making any profit from used games.
Instead of paying $60 for a game and having most of that money going back to the game developers, people pay $55 for used games and NONE of that money goes back to the people who made it. Thats why gamestop always pushes you to buy used because they pocket all the moneyFirstinstimct
Game developers usually don't see any money from a new game purchase. Publishers have already given a developer the fixed amount to develop it, after that, any other profit usually just goes to the developer.
1. The dev's are paid up front. The publishers are the ones who "lose" a sale. Aww poor CEO's I really fell bad for them.
2. The games industry is bigger then the movie and music industry combined. Used games aren't "hurting" anything.
The industry is and has been growing every year.
3. The best selling games this gen (CoD, Wii Fit etc.) didn't come with any DRM or online pass or anything like that and they all sold 20-30 million.
4. If I buy something I have the right to sell it.
5. /thread.
There are too many threads on this.
Presumably you mean goes to the publisher with your second sentence, which is true. Although I don't know whether wholly-owned development houses receive any performance bonuses based on sales, and independent developers may have profit-sharing built into their arrangements with publishers.Game developers usually don't see any money from a new game purchase. Developers make more than enough money off of their 60$ games which are already way over priced
if they want people to stop buying used games than maybe they should charge less for them.. Quit letting these corperations brainwash you into thinking they are justified for ripping you off it is really sad.
Well when people want to buy a game that is 2 years old they definetly don't want to buy it new. Their is sometimes a big price difference in aged games when it comes to new or used and a lot of people could certainly save a couple extra bucks for something necessary like gas or food.
System Wars is really in love with the used games debate these days. So long as they are available, people will buy them to save a buck. Developers want to stave off those sales? Offer their games for less, or do what timstuff recommended in yesterday's thread: lower price on release week to stimulate week one sales.
Haven't seen one of these topics in a while. Guess you shouldn't buy used new releases at Gamestop then, especially since you aren't saving hardly any money at all. Better to buy used elsewhere.

I like the online pass deal. I very rarely play online, so this will drive the prices of used games lower on eBay (where i get most of my used games) so i'll be spending less and still getting everything i want from the game.
My only problem with the online pass is the BS excuses publishers give for it. It has nothing to do with used sales, piracy, etc. Its simply another way to squeeze more money out of the market. Like day-1 DLC and map packs that should ahve been included with the initial purchase, publishers make it sound like they are doing you a favor by charging you more for the game.
It's fine. Just don't whine about things like online passes then.I buy used games and I don't care if it hurts the industry, umkay?

A place like GameStop can still price $5 less, regardless of the MSRP and still benefit more from used sales than new. So they'd still keep pushing used and pricing agressively competitively with new games.
Stolen from a blog I read:
The launch MSRP of a game could be $40.
GameStop buys it back at $15-20 and sells it for $35.
That wouldn't particularly help.

If that's the case, then there's really nothing that can be done, is there? So long as the market for used games is open and legal, it will be used by the populace to save money, even at the cost of the industry. People don't care about anything but themselves.
I know I buy used often enough, but mainly for older gen games. And I pick up newer games on sale whenever possible. Anything above $40 these days is just out of the question, IMO.

They really need to do what Steam does.. In offering weekly, huge holiday, and other such sales.. For console games it seems like your lucky to get $10 off a game with a sale.. While Steam for instance consistently has games on sale for 50% to 80% off.
Nice, very true.the problem is tc.. you need to go see the jimquisition more.. it will reveal all:

Very true. If you want to gimp developers like that, nosmokingbandit, by all means go ahead.
I'd prefer pirating to buying used games though. They help the developers the same...but at least piracy doesn't take money out of your wallet.
Legally allowed? What? The "used games hurt us" line is simply a facade by publishers to try to get more money out of games then they are legally allowed. Once you buy a game, that's the limit of the money they get.

Yeah, you're not making any sense. A developer is legally allowed to make as much money out of its IP as possible.
But a developer can't fully control the distribution of their IP...that's why their profits aren't 1:1 compared to a bakery, for example.
Online passes are an attempt to reclaim a slice of the pie that was lost.

They've found their solution, or so they think, until high-speed broadband becomes prevalent enough for their other potential solution DD-only distribution - their solution's online passes.Legally allowed? What?[QUOTE="shinrabanshou"]

Yep. When the online passes expire and the companies go out of business, the pirates will be there to preserve video game history.
You can't see it now, but they're doing the future world a huge favor.
It doesn't matter what you or the Gaming industry thinks. It's my right to resell if I wish to, or purchase used games. A mammoth (and continually growing) business thinks Gamestop is killing the industry? Then why sell through them? There are lots of places to sell games...
Underperforming Devs blame used game sales for their problems. Youthful, well meaning fans eat up the tripe and repeat it ad nauseum. But the publishers keep on sending games to GameStop.... even tailoring pre-order content for them. Hmmmm, could it possibly be this "problem" is being overblown?
The people who made it got their money from the initial sale.
One could argue that someone who decides to purchase a used game would have not otherwise have purchased the game until it reached the price they payed which would have taken a while for the game to reach naturally and in that time they may lose interest in the game anyway. You could also argue that people who sell their games tend to use that money for more games. And those who purchase used games will some times purchase dlc for that game(as I have done before) or online passes.
The game industry benefits from used games in one way or another. I don't really see the point in arguing this case over any other industry. There are used cars, clothes and movie sales for instance. Maybe if games started at a more acceptable price to the consumer then maybe used game sales wouldn't be such a factor that users on this board pretend it is.
Ultimately used game sales aren't the difference between a game failing or succeeding.
The devs made profit from the original purchase
RyanShazam
Sure, and then they arguably lose sales for every subsequent purchase.
Maybe they wouldn't lose the entire cut of what they'd get for a new copy (since people might have waited until sales to buy it new, or whatever), but they're still 'losing money' in the grand scheme of things.
Lol nobody's gonna pick a used game over a new one with just a $5 difference. That's not how it works and you know it.percechJoke? Gamestop sells it for $5 less because people buy it.
Joke? Gamestop sells it for $5 less because people buy it. I'm not that guy. I will jump all over it if it's more than $5. Btw, I borrow a lot of games. What do you guys think about that? Borrowing games to me is more like a "community" thing... I let my friends borrow games as well. But I'm not doing it on a mass scale like Gamestop... Gamestop's used games sells are no doubt hurting the game industry. Best Buy and Wall Mart jumping on board only adds to the problem.[QUOTE="percech"]Lol nobody's gonna pick a used game over a new one with just a $5 difference. I bought batman AA used last year, not sure if I would like it.............now i have it preordered...............just played Transformers WFC and love it..........then they announce yesterday that transformers FOC will be coming out which I will likely buy new. Sometimes used games do help devs in the long run.
Do we really need a new OMG USED GAMES HURT TEH DEVS!, thread everyday...don't think so. The games are over priced as is, and they make MORE than enough back with all the new sales, the few of us that buy used games are not hurting the industry. If a game sells 4 million and a million of them were used, who cares, I don't. They lost nothing. I usually do buy new....but their are exceptions......Dark Souls, gears 3, Borderlands....all worth the price of admission for me. Uncharted 1 and 2, resistance 2, Rage, duke nukem...not so much Gonna get them used, or already did and just don't care.
Ya know whats even better than buying used games, and screwing over devs? Selling the games you don't play anymore to your friends because they don't want to pay 60.00 or even 40.00 for a game. Its all about just screwing over even the used game stores lol.
