It depends what you want out of a review?
If you want a review for those who plan to rent the game, GS is terrible. They clearly focus far to much on length, challenge and replay value and if you are going to pay five bucks to rent it for a weekend what does that stuff matter to you.
If you are looking to buy the game I would say they are among the best in the business as I find they are one of the few sites that still actually treats their reviews as a tool for consumers rather then a way to playcate fanboys.
last gen: 9.9/10
Almost perfect with one or two hiccups.
this gen: doesnt even deserve a rating.
I swear I amso close to leaving Gamespot.
7.0/10 A few odd balls every now and then, but for the most part they are within a point of what I think is the correct score. the good: they don't "give away" scores. The format and layout of the reviews is well done. the bad: Sometimes they are a little too harsh. sometimes they are inconsistant with what they expect from a game. ----------- Now do your own review of gamespot's review system.jack_russelI generally agree with their reviews whether I like the score or not.
Very good, I hugely prefer their reviews over IGN's and 1up's.
That being said, there are certain reviews I disagree with obviously (TP, PDZ, WarioWare come to mind) but that's bound to happen with any review publication (after all, tastes and opinions vary.)
I find that after playing a game their opinion about it mirrors my own much more often then any other review site/magazine. So, I find them valauble when it comes to what games I choose to play (I buy, I never rent.)

... Rachet and Clank...
I'm not going to give them a standard review. Like the TC said, they seem to switch requirements of some games than others. Sometimes their reviews are spot on. At other times, they leave me scratching my head.
For instance, I thought the Halo 3 review was a little high. I thought it was more of a 8.5 game. It just didn't have enough innovation for me.
Whereas with R & C, I see it more as a 8.0 game. Their gripe with R & C was difficulty, but it's my understanding it has more than one. If you're going to slight R & C for lack of innovation, why not do the same to H3?

enough with that arrogance, seriously.
What arrogance?, Im not the one PO'd at the world because his system get yet another flop.Im not arrogant just think that GS is doing a fine job, besides I think this flop of a thread is in regards to the stickied post above, and I think cows should deal widit.

No problem. And this thread isn't? We all know the system is a bunch of crap.

Dude, put me on whatever list you want, Ill sign it for you, but do yourself a favor, and Deal Widit.Oh yeah, your poll speaks truth in volumes.
Thread fails
Every opinion on this forum has bias within it. Thus /thread.martingm1983But the thing that makes it unbiased is that everybody is coming together and sharing their opinion. So it's not like I claim that my opinion is the only valid one. By making the topic an open space for everyone's opinion the topic itself is unbiased, even if the opinions in it aren't

I like how they don't give away good scores like cookies. Do I agree with everything they write? Of course not. Have they made some obvious mistakes? Of course.
I think they should also account for a game's lasting appeal. I'm not talking about for a few months or a year or two, I'm talking a few years down the line. This would be impossible to account for when the game first releases, but maybe they should go back and acknowledge it in some way. Take a game like Final Fantasy Tactics, for which the argument can be made that it is 1 of the best Final Fantasy games. And that it was good enough to spawn a couple spinoffs/ports/remakes. People still play this game. And it didn't score AAA.
A 7.0/10
Good:
Seem to rate the hardest
Bad:
No sub-ratings
.5 increments (I thought it was good at first, now it's not - see mulitplat reviews on that one)
Incosistency (Their review scores don't match up with the written part often and trying to compare review scores makes you scratch your head often)

well, you could debate civily, instead of closing off all discussion by deeming the entire thread null and void. it's disrespectful and is the same as saying "/thread"
I would say 8.5/10, although I don't understand how thisdiscussion won't have any bias. Vyse_The_Daringthe thing that makes it unbiased is that everybody is coming together and sharing their opinion. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 says hi. That has to bring the score down to at least 9.7 by itself.
[QUOTE="Ibacai"]No worse then anyone else really and better then most. Still, there is some definite inconsistency within the standards GS uses.fixer293
Mulder and Scully called, they want their show back.
Teh magic bullit, teh conzpiracies!!!
I have already said that I don't think GS is biased towards any system or company. And I'm not saying there is a dark conspiracy GS is covering up. No, what I'm saying is that the standards between reviewers have become pretty darn loose and inconsistent. Making most numerical scores more of a hindrance then a help.Bad:
No sub-ratings

This I fully agree with,
There are many of us that have many consoles and as such the flexability to get the best version in the past GS would normally allow the 0.1 or 0.2 to reflect those changes.
The .0 and .5 really do hurt some of the reviews.
Incosistency (Their review scores don't match up with the written part often and trying to compare review scores makes you scratch your head often)

This is my biggest problem. People can definitely have different tastes and have their own opinions (I don't think Warioware is a AAA quality game, the reviewer on gamespot did) but if you review a game in such a way as to imply that it is a good but flawed game then it should have a score that reflects that.
horrible 5 outta 10. they used to be great, but in the last year or two they have had one hell of a decline in quality. jeffs and aarons are the worst by far.

the thread is a success. It's getting a variety of different opinons and views. That was the point. Just because you disagree with my opinion doesn't mean the topic fails.fixer293
This thread is DC.
I just made a topic basically bashing the whole situation not to long ago.Why would "I' be doing damage controll? The poll in this thread is worthless. Basically, fanboys here take the *number* score of games too seriously. They assume anything below AAA means an automatically horrible game, and are quick to judge without actually reading the review.
I gave GS reviews a AAAA score, why? Because anything less and I wouldn't be here. When it comes down to the actual content of the review - gamespot is ALWAYS spot on in terms of criticisms and praise. The reviews are all professionally presented and exceptionally well written. I have read to date only ONE gamespot review that made me do a double-take since it was inconsistent with the number score given (this was also a very long while ago, though.)
In short - fanboys saying you're pissed that gamespot "flopped" your big titles need to shut the hell up. A game scoring AA is an incredible accomplishment by the standards of Gamespot, and if you actually took time to *read* the reviews instead of glazing over the stupid number and ranting on forums; I'm sure you'd get alot more out of your time on this website.
You know what I would give Gamespot's review system? 7.5!
I don't like their new review system to begin with, since it's less accurate without the sub-categories but I hate the fact that the reviews come out so late compared to the other sites.
However, it's quite obvious now that they're not bothered by a game's hype and score it whatever they feel is necessary. Their reviews are fine with me, I guess.

Often times you'll read a review and it's really good, and in no way does the score match up with what was written.
