This is my honest opinion. Note: it's only an opinion--I am not implying that it should be a universal opinion or a fact. I know that many reasonable, unbiased people will disagree with me. But I think Drake and his female interests' character models are some of the best I've seen yet this generation.

Part of what makes the models believable is the motion-captured animations. The best part is that unlike in most games, facial reactions will be an important part of Uncharted's gameplay presentation. In the latest gameplay video, you can see Drake visibly wince when bullets go flying over his head.

Gears of War has very detailed character models, but they look a bit clay-like and unrealistic in my opinion (of course, they are appropriate given the overall tone and setting of the game). MGS4 also has very detailed character models that animate beautifully in cutscenes, but at least in the E3 build of the game, the faces do not change during gameplay in response to different situations. So in my view, Uncharted's models shine above Gears and MGS4's models in different ways, though Gears and MGS4 models are arguably more detailed.

I just think that the overall tone, color, and expressivism of the models in Uncharted are some of the most impressive I've seen.

Yeah, agreed. It's insane how nice this game looks. I didn't expect much from it when it was first revealed but after seeing the latest footage I'm extremely excited about this game.

In my honest opinion, Uncharted is the best looking unreleased console game that is set to arrive in 2007 (I'm being specific to avoid attacks!).

What did you expect, it's Naughty Dog. ND always delivers. Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter were great, and so will this game be. I can't wait to see if the new Jak & Daxter or a new platforming IP from them.

Lol, nasty.

I actually prefer it that way compared to say DOA4 hair since it actually flows and reacts constantly. It would be more jarring to me if her hair looked like thin coloured straw bobbing up and down.

But that makes me think, who's actually done hair right this generation? FFXIII maybe? I dunno.

I wouldn't say they're the best in terms of realism, they look a bit cartoony. But if that's the style they're going for then yeah it looks excellent.

Heavenly Sword's looks great, but Nariko's facial expressions don't animate in real-time gameplay, which is why I think Uncharted has the edge.

You should check out Mass Effect's Character models and Facial Animations.

Yeah that's true. Uncharted is the only game I can think of where the characters face is fully animated and is triggered by the environment around them.

In gears the characters tend to only look pissed when the gun gets jammed but Nathan has an entire range of facial animations. Although during cutscenes Heavenly Sword does look great. ;D

It seems our focus changes with each gen. First it was how many bit characters, then polygon count and pop-up, then it was jaggies and AI and now we are onto facial animation and physics. I wonder what will be next.

now judging from the battery sysmbol and it saying recording id assume thats from a cgi cutscene. heres a screenshot from actual gameplay.

i know sony likes to pretend cgi cutscenes are real gameplay footage(from e3 killzone fiasco) but as of not it looks like platic and is jaggedy. they could tighten it up comes launch but as of now it doesnt look to good.

Uncharted does look good but those pics are misleading. The gameplay charactor models(not the cutscene ones) don't seem to look as good. I don't blame them though, almost all games do it.

Looks great, but maybe a little too plastic-y. I like Mass Effect's better. Plus, this is a cutscene. In all cutscenes, models have an extra coat of paint. Mass Effect is all in-game. Animations look amazing. Maybe the mouth-movements are a tiny bit better in HL2. This game looks interesting. I want to try it out, but too bad I don't have a PS3.

Agreed, it looks incredible. And the fact that it all really works is what I love - I have just read in an OPM preview that Drake's current feelings actually affect everything else about him. Here's how it all works..

As an example, in a gunfight the game takes a number of factors like enemy AI hostility, enemy count, environment details, things like ammo count or health and then analysis it all and picks a suitable facial expression to complement how he (and probably you) feels. Then his feelings are further conveyed in his body language, so for example if he is angry he will move sharply and quickly. The total of 3000 animations can also be layered, so the library of different emotions on show jumps significantly.

I think this will really heighten immersion in the game.

Uncharted is one of the few PS3 games that I am really pumped up about..I love a good adventure game and Uncharted sort of reminds me of "Romancing the Stone", that Michael Douglas flick from years back..It looks pretty damn cool. Now I just wish people would stop comparing it to GEOW, which has a completely different artistic style.

To the TC: Fuzzy, I see your point and I agree the facial expresions do look a lot more realistic than most games..I just hope all of the animation is as good and the collision detection isn't wonky. That would just destroy everything and make this game a mess. I have respect for Naughty's work so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Those are renders, the actual cutscene and gameplay models don't look the same.

No face looks better than those in Crysis. I wonder when consoles will start getting SSS on faces too. :/

Um, those shots are CGI models(a mix of Zbrush and photoshop). they are not the same ones from the game. :| (look them up, they say that they are not the in-game models, they are the ones the artists had to try to match for in-game)

Check out the artist's(Richard Diamant) site here for similar stuff-http://www.rd3d.com/

I agree. And aslo I think that it's the best looking games so far this gen. That is considering the huge lush environments, art design, 1000's of animations, and realistic textures (humans, items, jungle). I love Gears and play it everyday. It's the best looking game to be released on consoles. But doesn't do much more than concrete, metal, dirt, and giant toy soldiers :P.

[QUOTE="Timstuff"]What I love about Uncharted's characters is that there's something strangely familiar about them. They look like real people that you'd know in real life. :PMeu2k7

Are you sure theyre not actors... they look like 2 familiar actors to me (The renderings)

I know that Drake (forgot his first name), may be modeled after Jason Rubin...a former Naughty Dog employee. It looks just like him!
