Uncharted's demo is highly dissapointing....

I was really looking forward to this game. I wanted a Tomb Raider like adventure, and the graphics looked incredible. I remember reading the Game Informer cover story and thinking how great the game looked. When I heard there would be a demo of the game I was estatic, I was really looking forward to the game because not only did it show off the ps3's great graphic power, but I thought it could be a truely unique game.

Guess not.

First off, what is up with this not so over the shoulder, more or less looking at your shoulder view? It's not natural, it feels wonky, it just doesn't seem right. Not to mention that the aiming is jerky, and not all that precise. Played COD4 recently? Why can't it aim like that, you know, crisp.

The six axis elements are poorly implemented and frustrate more than they add to the game play. The camera is problematic at times, which while it may give you a great view of some terrific plants and trees, it doesnt help when you are tring to figure out where to go.

Enemy AI is stupid, I watched as enemies shot into walls while I casually shot at them, killing them with ease. At the point after you jump off the cliff, with ancient ruins around, I ran into the middle of the map, in between the 3-4 enemies "patrolling," stod there un-noticed for 5 seconds, before the enemies decided to clumsily run for cover and shoot into the walls, not at me.

The melee attacks were cool but felt useless because you never really needed to close the gap and punch your enemies. Explosions from barrels look god awful, instead of a realistic explosion, you get a big orange puff that is supposed to be an explosion.

The good though is the game looks simply amazing. The graphics are crisp, and even when you swim in the water, your shirt becomes noticable damp. Very impressive. Too bad the gameplay isnt.

Barely AA.

Uncharted will be perhaps the best PS3 game this year. Ratchet is going to be hard to beat though.

just sharing my opinion, first imo the aiming is really easy, and it's in the same style as gears of war where the camera is at your shoulder rather than over/above your shoulder ala resident evil, i didn't think it was that hard at all, had an easy time hitting people from pretty far away with a pistol, pretty smooth imo although it doesn't have lock-on if that's what you meant, also the right analog stick changes camera angle, and as for the enemy AI i got killed a lot, maybe you had it on easy mode, i played it on hard mode and i constantly had to take cover or else die in seconds... in fact played the demo today, died 3 times on hard mode even though i had already played the demo several times before would've died several other times but got lucky, things don't always happen the same way every time too (and sometimes i just like to try out a certain battle with different tactics)

You do realise that when you aim, your gun is pointing to the dot, not at the enemies, so it looks very ackward. Go play GeOW and youll see how over the shoulder aim should be. The game just isn't that great and you just don't want to accept somebody found glaring flaws.

nearly everybody loved the demo, ur the only guy iv seen hate it. maybe its simply a game you don't like, there no need to try and shoot it down because its not in your taste

Play on a setting other than easy. You can't just sit there uncovered shooting at the enemies. If so it won't take long before you are dead. I agree with you on the melee part though, but this is a demo and hardly shows anything of the entire game.

Loved Tomb Raider, loved GeOW. Combine the two should be heaven. Its a shame my most anticipated PS3 title is not living up to the standards cows this board said it would be. I seriously implore you not to hype AAA (you wont anyway, so you wont get ownzrored!!!) because this game is just another Graphics are better than Gamplay romp

Play on a setting other than easy. You can't just sit there uncovered shooting at the enemies. If so it won't take long before you are dead. I agree with you on the melee part though, but this is a demo and hardly shows anything of the entire game. Dilrod

played on hard, and they were still dumb as paris hilton. Unless its an in-game event where they directly see you, it can take moments for them to notice you are just chillin in the open. It was rather unsettling, and I saw one to many bad guys shoot into the wall infront of them. Played this demo some 5 times now, each setting and was not impressed on either go around.

Uncharted looks WAY worse than I expected (the foliage is perhaps Far Cry-quality), but it's actually quite fun. My purchase schedule is a little packed right now, but perhaps I'll receive it as a gift.

Demo gives you a taste of the game. When I play a demo of a game, that's what I expect the final product to reflect. It's why the Marketplace on XBL (w/e is on the PS3 as well) is such a beautiful thing: Any game interests me? I download the demo and try it out.

I believe the comparison was with the way the aiming controls. He feels in COD4 it's a lot more crisp, percise, and smooth. While in Uncharted it feels clumsy to him.

it killed my expierence on Far Cry Instinct for 360 It was terrible. It is very much like Uncharted. It isn't smooth, it isn't crisp, and it just doesnt feel very natural. Like I said, play GeOW or COD4, the aiming is very crisp and your movements are smooth and very precise. I don't feel this way with Uncharted. It just doesnt work very well and the view-point your aiming from is so un-natural.

i dont like to make judgement on things I dont know very well. I played the demo the first time on easy and was kinda underwhelmed. I played it with a friend the second time and he felt the same. We moved to Medium on the third and thought the AI was just kinda meh, then went onto Hard and couldnt believe it. I played it one last time because I really was looking forward to this game, i really was. I'm just really dissapointed with how it seems to hard turned out after so much hype.

Did we play the same demo? I had almost the complete opposite experience in almost everything you touched on in the OP.

Especially complaining about the siaxis... Wtf are you talking about? If you were having trouble balacing on that log with the sixaxis... Just stop gaming. :?

so a game that is centered around shooting should not be compared to a game centered around shooting? Go play COD4 and youll see how crips its aiming controls are. Play uncharted and youll see how clumsy it feels and see how it could be frustrating.

i thought the six-axis was supposed to add fun, instead it was just lame, and the whole grenade system was meh. but your right, i guess lair should show me i should stop gaming because i couldnt handle the greatness of the six axis there either.

I disagree. In fact on hard mode I came over the hill where you are to jump and drop down by pressing O and I was seen way up on the hillside.

I disagree. In fact on hard mode I came over the hill where you are to jump and drop down by pressing O and I was seen way up on the hillside.

see i never was until i fully walked into the open and stood there for a few seconds. it happened every time but maybe there was a timing issue i.e. ai wasing looking at me or something....

I was really looking forward to this game. I wanted a Tomb Raider like adventure, and the graphics looked incredible. I remember reading the Game Informer cover story and thinking how great the game looked. When I heard there would be a demo of the game I was estatic, I was really looking forward to the game because not only did it show off the ps3's great graphic power, but I thought it could be a truely unique game.

Guess not.

First off, what is up with this not so over the shoulder, more or less looking at your shoulder view? It's not natural, it feels wonky, it just doesn't seem right. Not to mention that the aiming is jerky, and not all that precise. Played COD4 recently? Why can't it aim like that, you know, crisp.

The six axis elements are poorly implemented and frustrate more than they add to the game play. The camera is problematic at times, which while it may give you a great view of some terrific plants and trees, it doesnt help when you are tring to figure out where to go.

Enemy AI is stupid, I watched as enemies shot into walls while I casually shot at them, killing them with ease. At the point after you jump off the cliff, with ancient ruins around, I ran into the middle of the map, in between the 3-4 enemies "patrolling," stod there un-noticed for 5 seconds, before the enemies decided to clumsily run for cover and shoot into the walls, not at me.

The melee attacks were cool but felt useless because you never really needed to close the gap and punch your enemies. Explosions from barrels look god awful, instead of a realistic explosion, you get a big orange puff that is supposed to be an explosion.

The good though is the game looks simply amazing. The graphics are crisp, and even when you swim in the water, your shirt becomes noticable damp. Very impressive. Too bad the gameplay isnt.

How can it be dissapointing when that's not even a word?

I had no problem with the aiming, only reason I had difficulties hitting people is because they're so damn unpredictable and mobile. The only problem I have with the AI is that they automatically know where you are, even when they shouldn't. As soon as they've spotted you you're on their radar. Makes it kinda difficult to sneak up on people.

Balancing the sixaxis seems kinda pointless, but eh, who cares. The grenades work quite well after you've gotten the hang of it. But I guess the question is; why should you have to? Wouldn't the analog stick do just as well? Seems to be different just for the sake of being different.

Melee attacks >>>>>>> chainsaw. That is all.

Definitely AA, at least.

hey armored core 4 is also centered around shooting, i guess i could compare uncharted to that too

compare it to GeOW or Resident Evil, it's not a FPS never will be, TPS and FPS are two different sub-genres of the "shooter game"

COD4 is FPS, so the shooting better be at its best because it's what you're doing most of the time. Uncharted is a different genre therefore that doesn't apply. There are plenty of other things that come into play other than just shooting. While I understand you didn't like the aiming, I completely disagree and thought it was great. And I don't really get your complaint with the A.I. They threw grenades very accurately, they flanked you, and did a great job at avoiding gunfire. I just don'tget your complaints, I had the completely opposite feelings while playing the demo.

it killed my expierence on Far Cry Instinct for 360 It was terrible. It is very much like Uncharted. It isn't smooth, it isn't crisp, and it just doesnt feel very natural. Like I said, play GeOW or COD4, the aiming is very crisp and your movements are smooth and very precise. I don't feel this way with Uncharted. It just doesnt work very well and the view-point your aiming from is so un-natural.rocktimusprime


can u tell me how aiming is crisp? it really doesnt make sense... If u mean like auto aim, then I prefer it like this--actually taking some skill

Wow, what a horrible attempt at discrediting his post. He was comparing the aiming -- not the style of it or any of that, but how natural it feels. Whether it's over the shoulder or first person, moving the recticle over the target has the same function in every game involving a gun, bow and arrow, magic missile, etc.

i suspect only 3 of you read the whole post, because very few of you have reasoned a single point I brought up or have offered a different view on it, other than typical whining about someone not liking a hyped game.

kudos to those who read it and brought up points like the six axis, perhaps we could have a real discussion of the game while other just whine that it didnt get a good write up from of all people a SW reader...

Uncharted is centered around shooting? I mean, sure there is plenty shooting in it, but there is a lot more to it than shooting. That's why it's an adventure genre. Also, the dude isn't a Marine.

Edit: Don't get me wrong though, you are welcome to your opinion. Just don't pass it off like it's a fact and we should all live by it.

can u tell me how aiming is crisp? it really doesnt make sense... If u mean like auto aim, then I prefer it like this--actually taking some skill

Go play gears of war, or every recently call of duty 4. The guns move in the fashion you want, you can pull of some really slick shots, when you see a head and want your gun there, it almost just moves there natrually.

In Uncharted the gun's dont move with the same crispness. You will have to re-adjust and re-adjust to get the shot you really wanted. Its not really anything about "skill," at all. A skilled FPS or Shooter fan will want to look at a target and just naturally move the reticle onto his head. In Uncharted I just dont get the same feeling, it might partially be JUST becase the "off the shoulder, to the side," view is very very ackward.

Part of it may have to do with the PS3 analog, which I never found that great, even in Resistance, which I thought was a great game.

The aiming just isn't crisp. Bad aiming can ruin a game, it ruined Farcry Instincts on the 360, it was plagued with the same exact problem.

I think you have lost sight on perspective. Look at the way the guy moves, talks, runs, and jumps it is all aimed at realism. How realistic would it be for an average everyday guy to shoot as well as a soldier in the Iraq conflict, or aim like some meat-head killing machine in Gears of War? He shoots clumsy, runs clumsy, and jumps clumsy because he is your clumsy everyday guy not some genetic freak of nature. Trying to compare realism in a game like this to other shooters is like comparing realism with a game like NBA jam and NBA NK8, they are both created for 2 entirely different approaches for gameplay. I for one welcome the realstic approach for once, and highly enjoyed the demo. Maybe you can try to enjoy the game for what it is, not for what it's not.

We're not talking about how much more fun that 1-2 seconds sixaxis gameplay was, we're talking about how frustrating steadying the sixaxis for 1-2 seconds was. Simply put... if you can't handle that, well I don't know what to tell you. :?

Unlike Lair, the sixaxis wasn't used in the entire game. Instead, it was only used in small segments where it might make sense to use. And it was easy to use.
