alright guys and gals, i am a pc gamer and i own a 360, and soon too own a ps3 for xmas. But is it just me or is the unreal engine all hype that doesnt deliver. I mean i was playing unreal tournament 3 and i gotta say i wasent really impressed,i mean graphically it looked very good but the game itself was actually boring compared to unreal 2004. Also i have to say gears of war is an amazing game but once you get passed the graphics the game itself losses its substance. anyone else agree or am i the only one

I don't know what the deal is with the UT3 engine but everybody seems to be having problems with it. Hopefully the Crytek and ID engines fair better and more people start using them or Epic helps the devs out. The only developer that praises it so far has been Gearbox.

Yes. Graphics do not make a game better.

unreal engine has been hyped to heaven but realistically it's not that great anymore, the crytek engine is much better and whatever engine naughty dog used for uncharted and bioware for Mass Effect have surpassed it.

So your logic is that the engine sucks because the gameplay isn't fun? Did i miss something, or is that your argument?

UT3's main point I'd say is to show off the new unreal engine (gfx and physics)

I read people say the game's storyline is notvery good; don't expect them to do what they did for UT2004.

It's unfortunate that dev's gave up on the Doom 3 engline so early, there was a link on here a while ago showing what the D3 engine is STILL capable of - looked amazing.

THe Unreal Engine is good only for some games. Like Gears their isn't that many players in the game at once so the engine is fully used. As for like Mass Effect using the it, its modified to look better or worse at some spots. I think Square Enix will show case the engine best. White Engine!

UT3 engine is really good... look at all the quality games that came out of it: Bioshock, Mass Effect, GeoW, UT3... all of which are top tier. I don't really see what the issue is really. Sure, I think Crytek's engine is probably going to be way better - however we will only know once other games based on it's engine are released.

it looks like you have to blame epic, because an engine has nothing to do the the gameplay really its just the graphics because bioshock is all flash and substance

The UTIII engine by itself is very mediocre. That's the point though as a licensed engine so developers can add on top of it to make it even better with their own flash. The engine by today's standards though is bad. It would have been groundbreaking four years ago when they started developing it.

100% agreed, you cant blame the engine on game depth and substance. Bioshock wasnt all that great either.

The engine is great though and that can be seen by many developers that use it and it hasnt even reached its peak right now. Crytek engine will never be as successfull because their marketing is simply stupid. As far as i know they dont sell it and dont give modders enough tools to handle it. It wont succeed in the long run. (And its not all that great).

To the poster above: have you ever worked with their engine and tools?

I never said it had not, did i?

I know many people like Bioshock. But i somehow couldnt get into it. I loved the setting, but imho they didnt really use the engine to its recent limits. And, i cant get rid of the feeling, that i already had played that game before :) Dont know why, it doesnt seem that revolutionary and new to me as many reviews stated. (My gaming taste seems to be a bit unusual hehe)

It's just an Engine, Developers have to make a good deep game. It's like, hey here is a tool box and some wood go build a house. If the carpenter sucks the house will suck.
