When I ask people what is their most anticipated game this year, far too often do I get responses like: "GTA IV ftw!" and "I bought a PS3 just for MGS4!" and "Gears 2 is gonna be GOTY!". Technically, there's nothing wrong with this. These titles are sure to be amazing, and it's natural to be psyched about them. But what about new IP's? The games that go beyond the scope of what developers are known for? Quite a number of people don't even know about these games, and that's a shame, since they look very impressive. Heck, my own friend didn't know that Square-Enix makes games besides Final Fantasy. So, for that guy, and for System Wars, here are some upcoming games (that are not sequels, remakes, or spinoffs) that you should keep an eye on.
------------------------------------------
Alan Wake
Platform: Xbox 360 and PC
A psychological thriller set in an absolute photorealistic rendition of a quaint mountain town, Alan Wake is a title that is sure to have people talking for a while. As for the protagonist, he arrives at this town with the hopes of finding his missing wife, but slowly turns mad during the process. His enemies are mysterious, coming out of the darkness, and Alan has to fend them off....with a flashlight? Featuring weather effects and day/night cycles that actually affect the course of gameplay, this is a title that you'd do well to keep an eye on.
Alpha Protocol
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC
Borrowing a page from the Bourne movies, Obsidian Entertainment and Sega aim to deliver a heart thumping action experience with role-playing elements throughout. Most RPGs are concerned with fantasy or sci-fi themes, but Alpha Protocol is delving into the exciting world of espionage. Players will have a host of gadgets and weapons available to them to get the job done. In addition, Alpha Protocol will feature a dynamic dialogue system in which no two conversations ever play out the same way.
Borderlands
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC
Developed by the highly talented Gearbox Software, Borderlands is part FPS and part RPG. Set in a lawless planet far away from the "safety" of Earth, players will be forced to fight against fellow pirates as well as alien monstrosities. Multiple characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, are available to the player and are highly customizable in their own right. Vehicular combat is also a major part of the gameplay as well. And for all the gunplay enthusiasts out there, the game will offer a ridiculous amount of firearms, using a random gun generation system capable of producing half a million unique firearms.
Brutal Legend
Platform: Xbox 360 and Playstation 3
Inspired by the works of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath, Brutal Legend offers a rather unique way of incorporating music into videogames. The game is a hack-and-slash action title in which players will assume the role of a heavy metal star and his roadies in an alternate history where humans are enslaved by demons. Like true heroes, players will charge into the thick of battle with two axes: a regular battle axe, and your guitar to cast...magic spells? You do not want to miss this.
The Conduit
Platform: Wii
A sci-fi themed FPS that will borrow heavily from the control schemes of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, two tried-and-true control schemes. Developer High Voltage Software will attempt to bring 360-like visuals to the Wii using the Quantum 3 engine and having the game run at 60 frames per second.
Cry On
Platform: Xbox 360
Cry some moar! Mistwalker's next RPG takes place in a completely fantastical world in which humans coexist with giants. The game stars a young girl named Sally and her giant Boggle as they come to grips with the world around them in a tale of profound joy and sorrow. Sakaguchi seems determined; he dropped more than one billion yen on this project already.
Dark Void
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC
Capcom and Airtight Games have been quite busy as of late, working to bring to you a gritty sci-fi themed action title. Superhumans have engaged in open warfare with a god-like alien species known as only "The Watchers". The player, of course, will assume the role of a superhuman and engage in fast paced vertical combat mixed with mid-air and on-foot action.Dead Space
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC
Sci-fi themed survival horror has never looked better. Or more frightening. This title revolves around an engineer who discovers that a distress call from a nearby mineral gathering ship has gone awry, with a parasitic alien infestation on board. Players will fight off foes with customizable weaponry, solve puzzles in zero gravity, and even use powers like telekinesis for survival.
Platform: Wii, DS, and PC
An action puzzle game in which players are tasked to liberate a monochromatic city from corporate alien control using a blob. Players will control the blob and bounce it against buildings and people, returning color to the city one step at a time. The game will feature a single-player campaign and splitscreen multiplayer modes.

Disaster: Day of Crisis
Platform: Wii
This is a survival game in which the player has to live through various natural disasters and catastrophes. It is a rather unique project, and Nintendo has claimed that Disaster will feature cutting-edge physics and gripping visuals to make the player feel like they really are living through the experience. Keep your eye out on this action/survival title.
Dragon Age
Platform: PC
Fresh off the success of Mass Effect, RPG powerhouse Bioware is going medieval for their next project. This RPG will cast the player in a dark, gritty fantasy world on the brink of war, and only you will be able to save the kingdom. Epic enough? Moral choices will have a significant impact to the game world, such as the crowning of a new king and the genocide of an entire race. Like typical Bioware fashion, players can expect deep character customization, multiple character cIasses, and cool powers to experiment with.
Fracture
Platform: Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC
Futuristic warfare has never looked so fun. Players will assume the role of a cybernetic commando facing off against genetically enhanced humans with a huge arsenal of firearms and abilities. Fracture's biggest tool, however, is the environment. Environmental deformation is the flavor of the day, and players will use it quite a bit (and have fun doing it). Players can reshape the battlefield at anytime by creating craters in the ground to get a clean shot at enemies, raise terrain to provide cover, and form tunnels into buildings that are otherwise inaccessible. Sometimes, destruction is necessary to complete objectives.

"Please sir, may I have some more?"
You got it!

Haze
Platform: Playstation 3
Free Radical Design, the folks that bought you Timesplitters, is going for something a little darker with their next title. An FPS with themes like oppression and drug abuse, players will fight with the use of a hallucinogenic drug called Nectar. This drug will increase your strength, speed, and accuracy, but overdose on it, and you'll find yourself in a trance-like state, detached from the world around you. In any other situation, a mixture of drugs and guns are generally a pretty bad idea, but it looks like Haze will put the matter into a whole new perspective.
Heavy Rain
Platform: Playstation 3
Developed by Quantic Dream, this title is claimed to be a dark film noir thriller with mature themes. Players will be able to control multiple characters throughout the open-ended gameplay, in which even your slightest actions can affect the course of the entire game. The game engine is particularly impressive as it is capable of producing near-photorealism and extreme emotion; tears, wrinkles, hair, and eyes are all generated in real time.
Huxley
Platform: Xbox 360 and PC
A massively multiplayer online FPS? You got my attention Webzen. After a series of natural disasters strike our planet, two factions (humans and mutants) emerge to claim an all-powerful energy source, which will decide the fate of their very existence. Cities supposedly house up to 10,000 players at a time and twitch-based firefights range from small scale 1v1 to huge 60v60 skirmishes. In addition, players will have an assortment of vehicles, weapons, and abilities available to them.
inFamous
Platform: Playstation 3
Developer Sucker Punch productions, the team behind the wonderful Sly Cooper franchise, is attempting something a bit grittier with their first current-gen foray. Infamous is a sandbox game starring characters with superpowers, such as superstrength, flight, and telekinesis. The protagonist can be either a hero or antihero, based on the player's moral choices.
Infinite Undiscovery
Platform: Xbox 360
Rolls off the tongue doesn't it? Joking aside, this looks like a worthy addition to the Xbox 360's JRPG line-up. Developed by the excellent Tri-Ace, this game will incorporate some ideas from the WRPG realm, including decision-making on the players part that will alter the overworld in real-time. Exploration will be a larger part in this game than in most other JRPG, with the player tasked to make discoveries and researching them to progress the story.
L.A. Noire
Platfrom: Playstation 3
This title, published by Rockstar Games, is set in a perfectly recreated 1940's Los Angeles. Players will assume the role of a detective solving a mysterious series of murders with underlying themes of drugs and corruption. The gameplay is completely open-ended; it's up to you to solve the case in any way you can. L.A. Noire will also have liberal use of monochromatic coloring, to make it truly feel like you're in a detective film from the 1940's.
Platform: Xbox 360 and Playstation 3
Square-Enix and new IPs are not very common, so it's refreshing to see titles like The Last Remnant on the horizon. Featuring fantastical creatures and a massive overworld, players will control generals in a search of the titular remnants, massive artifacts that will almost certainly turn the tide of battles. The battles themselves are massive, with the player issuing commands to his troops on the fly. The player also has to keep an eye out for his troops' morale, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle.
And thou shall recieve moar.
