Alright so my computer is pretty decent, only thing it'd need is a new graphics card and a power supply, which would cost around $250 (ATi 5770 and some 500W power supply). Now, should I spend the $250 and upgrade my PC, or put that towards a PS3? My TV is kind of **** a 19" SDTV and my monitor is a 22" LCD (which would get upgraded to a 1920 x 1200 monitor in the future if I do upgrade it). The only other console I own is a PS2, and I have a PSP and DSLite. I like racing games, fighting games (I'd buy a fight stick), shooting game (must be mouse and keyboard), RPGs, sports games (I can use a controller on my PC), action games, mmorpgs.

What do you want? If it is more games, I'd go for the PS3. But if it is better performance I'd go for an upgrade.

Well, I can always buy a blu ray disk drive for my PC (it's about, what, $80?). Also, I honestly don't have a TV that will take advantage of a blu ray player (besides my computers monitor), and by the time I do, a new console could be out, or something.

I may be a lemming, but PS3. top end PC gaming is nice, but upgrading a PC is simply more expensive then buying a console. If money is no object, id go for PC because you can get some amazing stuff there, but get a PS3 and its a much cheaper way to get access to tons of new games

I had the same choice to make, upgrade PC or buy a console and I was leaning toward the consoel side ebcuase I knew upgrading would cost a bit more. But I chose to upgrade in the end and I'm so glad I made the choice. I so would have regretted not upgrading.

People, read the OP. He has a 19" SDTV. No way in hell do you want a PS3 on that.

Unless you plan to upgrade to a bigscreen tv, forget about the PS3. If you had a 42" HDTV, I'd say go for the PS3. But with what you got, go with PC upgrade.

in your scenario id probably go with the computer upgrade

i personally found it very annoying playing 360/ps3 games on my old 32" tube tv compared to ps2 and other previous gen platforms, and it can only be worse with a crappy 19 incher

and im sure there are plenty of ps2 games that u havent played yet to keep you busy for your console gaming needs

btw, what are your current pc specs?

I agree with you that my TV is way too small for the PS3, that's what was stopping me at first, haha.

Yeah I just got the PS2 and have only boughten about 7 games (really cheap too, used at gamestop as long as they have the manuals, all for about $40).

PC Specs:

Motherboard - MSI P45 Platinum

Processor - Intel E8200 (stock, might overclock in the future)

RAM - 4GB DDR2 667

GPU - 7600 GS

Monitor - Hyundai 22" 1680 x 1050

I was thinking of also getting a quad core, but from some charts I saw, my E8200 performs on par or better than the quad in terms of gaming.

ya man, a video card/power supply(assuming u need a new psu) upgrade would suit u perfectly, especially since ur cpu can handle everything thing greatly when paired up with a nice video card and OC'd a bit

you'll definitely see a significant boost in performance over a 7600gs in all your games with a 5770(or another similar card)

he's buying a 5770 and a psu, that's 300 bucks tops. and i'd probably go upgrade cause dx11 is awesome (i have 5970) but if your friends have ps3 get it, it's online is awesome.

5770 has low power consumption you wouldn't even need to buy a 500watt powersupply (unless you plan on getting ati 5800 series card like I did).

If you are getting a 5770 knock off 60$ or whatever off the price. plus if you shop right and get it at NewEgg you can get it for like 150$ total.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131328&cm_re=ati_5770-_-14-131-328-_-Product

That right there is basically half the price of a PS3, and the hardware itself is potentially at the minimum 4x faster than ps3 hardware (rsx + cell) combined.

Well, there's your answer. Unless you plan on upgrading to a decent TV (37" or better), just stick to the PC.

Yeah that's fine too, just remember you don't need a new PSU, it's a total waste of money because gthe 5770 has lower power consumption than even a stadnard 8800gt. I had it for like 3 months before I sold one to get a new 5850 and the 5770 ran perfectly fine on my psu which is rated at 350watts!!

Can you connect the PS3 to your monitor? That's how I'm setup, if so I'd say go with the PS3, if not, go with the PC upgrade cause you don't have an HDTV. That's what I would do.

I wanted a 500 watt just incase I decided to go crossfire in the future or something, but If it's a decent amount cheaper, I'll get the 400W. Also I might get a blu ray drive in the future.

If you ever plan on doing multiple GPUs, I'd plan on something more like 750W, give or take. Check AMD's recommended PSU list. http://game.amd.com/us-en/crossfirex_components.aspx?p=3

If you ever plan on doing multiple GPUs, I'd plan on something more like 750W, give or take. Check AMD's recommended PSU list. http://game.amd.com/us-en/crossfirex_components.aspx?p=3

The 5770 has very low power consomption.

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/2983/his_radeon_hd_5770_1gb_video_card_in_crossfire/index14.html

a quality 400w psu would still be almost borderline enough for you're setup with a 5770...you never want to skimp on a psu

i highly suggest u bump it up to a nicer 650w like this, that way with future upgrades wheter it be crossfire 5770's or a nice 5870, etc you'll be in the safe zone and dont have to worry about getting a nother new psu, and it should still be all within your budget along with a 5770

even with a nice 400w psu, i still wouldnt feel safe with for long term use

Upgrading seems like the obvious choice to me, given what information you have provided.

yeah its better not to skimp on the psu a high quality psu with high wattage means it will be a very long time before your upgrade your psu.

Upgrade your PC for sure. I would even sugest trying to sell the TV and PS2 for whatever you can get in hopes of getting an even better GPU.

Don't forget that in order to buy all the buy-worthy PS3 exclusives you need at least another 200$. While you have steam here that sells new"ish" games for 5$.

PhilipV94

Yeah they're pretty cheap, I was thinking of getting this one;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150462&cm_re=ati_5770-_-14-150-462-_-Product

because it has 1GB of memory and the PowerColor brand is kind of ehr with me right now. It says it's on sale so if the sale ends I'll be getting;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102864&cm_re=ati_5770-_-14-102-864-_-Product

or

Get a 50$ Corsair 400w PSU, a 120$ HD 5770, and spend the rest on a blu-ray drive if you want oneGTR2addict

I wanted a 500 watt just incase I decided to go crossfire in the future or something, but If it's a decent amount cheaper, I'll get the 400W. Also I might get a blu ray drive in the future.

500w will NOT suffice for crossfire 5770's, not even 4850's. a friend of mine runs some crappy upgraded acer computer with a Q8200, 4 gigs of DDR2 and a 5770 and it runs beautifully on his corsair 400w

What do you want? If it is more games, I'd go for the PS3. But if it is better performance I'd go for an upgrade.

kolkov01

the PC has more games...

but he already has a pc he just wants to update it, id say get a ps3 so you can play games from both Pc and PS3.
