Just a rumor.

New Dota 2 Workshop tools believed to carry signs of next-gen game engine.

A group of modders and game enthusiasts suspect that Valve has quietly soft-launched Source 2, the long-awaited game engine that could be the building blocks for future games such as Left4Dead 3 and Half-Life 3.

In the early hours on Thursday, Valve announced it had released Workshop Tools for Dota 2, allowing modders to create and distribute custom game modes. Notably, the new tools have relatively high system requirements, such a 64-bit version of Windows and a DirectX 11 compatible graphics card.

"Everything in this package is a new game," he writes.

"It's all the Dota assets and code ported over to Source 2. That's why Hammer [a game editor] is different. That's why the console is different. Guys. Valve just soft launched the entire Source 2 engine."

More here.

What do you think?

I hope it means we're getting closer to the announcement of a certain game with "3" in it.

Soo... What language does it use?

I'm going to start looking into C++ with UE4, but I liked how Unity supports C#.

Too much secrecy coming from Valve. It's all in all rather pointless.

In terms of Graphics can Valve actually make an engine that lives up to all the hype surrounding it ?

Looking back to how Valve showcased Source with the HL2/Source demonstrations I doubt that Valve would publicly release it like this.

Hasn't Valve been working on Source 2 for sometime now? I wouldn't doubt if it gets released sometime in the near future. What is exciting is thinking about which game they will showcase the new engine with.

Everytime something like this happens everyone hypes it and then Valve does nothing..... Apart from release more TF2 hats.

Their secrecy is the entire reason behind the respect they get. Valve doesn't lie, because they never announce things before they are 100% sure they will be achievable. It's secrecy covered by a blanket of consumer-friendly marketing...

Hopefully it will be technologically intensive to give me strong reason to upgrade.

Looks fake to me. Looks like UE3 or something. Low poly models with a lot of bloom and ambient occlusion. That's not what a next gen Valve game would look like (it would look much better).

I just wanted to post the link because I remembered Cboat mentioning it at some point.

Heh true.... ironically except rational hermits... I can't wait to see what additions to modability it provides, and possibilities of steam intergrated features.

I remember an article about it saying how much mod support and dedicated server options will improve... cannot wait. screw graphics.

Source 2 garry's mod? yes please.

There's only one game Valve will release with a new engine. So has it been and so shall it be.

They aren't hermits... They are real PC Gamers. I like'em.

I wish they go beyond Mod support and hope they had easy to use tools like they did for Portal 2.

L4D3 files have been found. Dota 2 has a 64 bit version as well (Loading times are faster.) And, a xbox cursor for dota 2 has been found. (Console release?)

Steam now has a new icon and an overall blue look to it, it's in the beta. I'd say something is definitely going on at Valve, something new.

I don't expect much from Source 2 Engine . Just few days ago Gabe was interviewed and he once again said that they have no plans to focus on Single Player games anytime soon (google it) . On other hand we already know that Source 2's main focus will be on user generated content .

I think they'll launch Left 4 Dead 3 as launch title for Source 2 and invite players to create custom maps and weapons for it . I think then , they'll advertise it as "indie/user friendly engine with great visuals" (but nothing revolutionary) . I hope I am wrong .

I've not used the original Steam in ages but it looks a little better now.

I'll stick to my Steam skins "Metro" & "Pixelvison"

This thread deserves a huge bump. Remember that leak from January about Source 2, L4D3, and HL3? Well, this is interesting. Some people over at GAF are making a fuss about it as well. Just thought I'd share.

Left 4 dead 3 is maybe possible, MAYBE. But not Half Life 3, this game is dead.
