In an interview with Gabe the president of Valve games he had a lot to say about the PS3 and especially the PS3 version of portal 2 noting that PS3 owners are going to start to see the benefits of having steamworks on their conosle and how if only it was also possible to do on x360 saying:

"We certainly can deliver a lot of value to customers to the degree to which we have those capabilities. With the PS3 obviously we made a lot more progress with that. The PS3 customers of Portal 2 are going to start to see the benefits of that with Portal 2 DLC coming out in September. So we'd really like to be able to do that for Xbox customers as well,"

valve also confirm that next year counter strike will do cross platform between PS3, MAc and PC but NO 360

Wait, I don't get this mumbo jumbo DLC. Why is Steamworks required for DLC? You can do that on the current system.

The platinum trophy in co-op mode, where you got to beat stages 1 to 5 or 6 i think in co-op, i already did the first 3 levels but then i ended up playing other games while my friends beat it and platinumed it which left me so behind :P. some of the levels require you to not die at all and is why i needed someones whos really good :P. i'll add you whats your PSN? or steam? we could do a view co-op once your free and try to beat the levels one by one

nothing wrong with free DLC, I can't wait to see the spin on that by good old williamDiviniuz
Spin there is no spin needed. Please explain to me why steamworks is needed to provide Free dlc on Xbox live? do you mean the loads of free dlc, avatar items, themes, gamer pics, Ms points I've received over the past 10 years are nothing? While I maybe filled with quite a bit of discontent over Microsofts attitudes right now please explain to me why Steamworks is needed for DLC to be free on xbox live? Too many in this thread seems to assume and try to claim as fact there is no such thing as Free things on xbox live when in reality compared There are more free things on xbox live then there are on psn and I've taken the time to look. but ignore all that right now and explain to me why is steamworks needed on xbox live so that these things can be free when obviously other companies have offered and managed to get free dlc on xbox live without steamworks?

Well it depends. If it turns they want to charge money for Portal 2 dlc on xbox, then steamworks would prevent this for 360 owners (as this would prevent MS from slapping a price tag on something that is free to everyone else). However, if they offer it free (which I suspect they will), then steamworks is a nice extra feature to have, but not a necessity.

Maybe Valve is just trying to twist MS's arm into having a more open network like the PSN?

But thats not really a reason for steamworks, From what I understand of Microsofts xbox live release policies is that If a developer wants dlc offered free then said developer must pay for testing, bandwidth, and server space thus that content is offered free, When cost is passed onto the consumer the bandwidth, testing, and server space are covered with any remainder going as profit to both Microsoft and said developer of the dlc or the publisher for that matter.

It seems odd that people are talking about how Microsoft is bone headed...etc when If valve really wanted this content to go out to consumers they could work out a way to get it offered free under Microsofts own system instead of having to shoehorn steamworks into xbox live. One cannot point to a thing and say its all their fault nothing in life is ever just one sides fault responsibility can and should be spread around.

Maybe Valve is just trying to twist MS's arm into having a more open network like the PSN?

and an open network is a good thing 100% of the time even though Xbox live closed network for the past 10 years has received numerous awards, loyal users and the like?

It just seems odd that a method is in place for content to be distributed and it works very well, policies are in place to charge for said content or offer it for free...But instead of working within that system which many other developers have done successfully we get you need to have steamworks dammit MS is closed evil network psn is so much better. Its even odder that not 2-3 years ago Newell was distolling the virtues of Xbox 360 and xbox live and couldn't say anything but bad things about the ps3 and psn, Then we had a major shift in his policies something outside of xbox live and psn must be at work considering both have been in their current state of open and closed their entire life span.

no...there is never a time in life when just one side is at fault there are always deeper reasons then just hey they did it because they wanted too. Blame can be spread around for anything. and no I dont mean just in the game industry it is simple cause and effect there has to be a reason for something and there has to be a reason for that reason. I just drank some water out of a water bottle, the cause was thirst the affect? me drinking, why was that thirst caused? varying levels of water in my body, the amount of time since I last took a drink...etc there is never just direct cause and effect there has to be either a cause or effect that caused the intial cause and then effect.

Valve is way too obsessed with Steam. I liked them a lot better when they were obsessed with making games.

no...there is never a time in life when just one side is at fault there are always deeper reasons then just hey they did it because they wanted too.

Wow that's some deep stuff man. :D

You literally made me lol with this response. I refuse to reply seriously. Good day, sir.

actually william is right, the law of cause and effect is universally excepted by scientists everywhere

I'm more concerned with the fact I've still not been told a valid reason why Steamworks is even needed. If Valve is so hard up for customers to have free dlc and updates *and updates were always free anyways on xbox live* then it would make sense they would work with Microsoft to release free dlc on xbox live itself instead of saying sorry Users its all microsofts fault with their closed xbox live we can't possibly offer free dlc any other way then steamworks.

Good news for the 3 or 4 people out there that still care about Portal 2....

KevinnButlerNPK
They should release it on Live and charge a ludicrous fee for it. Just for the Lulz.

I wasnt talking about science my friend, nor was I talking about anyone drinking from a bottle of water. If someone goes out and murders someone, it's their fault. It's THAT person's fault. Sometimes there might be a reason, sometimes there aint. Responsibility is in fact, sometimes only one side's fault.

Lets forget free DLC and updates then, what about Cross Platform Play? because of microsoft 360 cant even do a simple cross platform between systems. you know how AWESOME it would be if i can play CS against 360 ppl on my ps3? i'd switch to CS and leave CoD just for that but look MS and their closed system.

steamworks needed for cross platform

I don't think most 360 owners care who they're playing against. As long as they get to play.

Though it is a nifty feature.

I doubt Sony nor MS will allow cross-console play.

If Sony will allow cross platform play with PC, I cant imagine them saying no about doing with the 360.
