Orange Box 'didn't put our best foot forward', developer tells CVG

Valve has told CVG that it didn't put its "best foot forward" on PS3 with The Orange Box - and that it is working to "get better" on the system.

The PS3 version of The Orange Box - a huge commercial and critical success on Xbox 360 - was criticised by some quarters after Valve outsourced its development to EA.

The game was marked down by reviewers - with frame rate issues becoming a common bugbear.

Valve writer Chet Faliszek told CVG:

"We thought that the Orange Box didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community. We don't want to do something like that again on the PS3. We want to give PS3 owners the best possible experience.

"Some of that will come from us learning and getting better. Before we can go onto the PS3 again, we want to make sure we're better at developing for it."

The comments come after Faliszek said that Valve would develop on PS3 "down the road".

So i guess left for dead 3 ps3 confirmed? (not that I care for l4d) Half-life 3 done by valve themselves for ps3 would be nice though. (although I will buy that game for my pc anyway as valve is a pc dev , they shouldn't even do console games to begin with.)

This is a couple of days old, but they obviously don't believe what they said since Portal 2 was just announced for PC/360. This is just PR talk, if Valve really gave a s*** they would develop for PS3. Plenty of other developers can do it, so there's no excuse for Valve.

Maybe they're just fronting maybe they dislike the PS3 or Sony. Either way doesn't matter to me since I tend to play Valve games on PC.

I play Valve games on the PC as well so I'm not directly affected either, but my point is don't say "oh we messed up blah blah" but then not do anything about it. It's better that you just make it known that you won't develop for a console instead of say things like this and then announce that one of your most beloved games won't be appearing on said console that you just said you "messed up on."

I just hope they can get Left 4 Dead 2 ported, as well as work towards Portal 2 and Episode 3 on the PS3.

I get what you're saying. I wonder one thing though. Do they actually care or is just PR talk, do they really want to work on the PS3? (okay I had two questions lol) IF that is the case I don't see why Gabe and Doug just admit it like Sakaguchi did (about not liking the PS3).

With all the great games PS3 has to offer both graphically and technically, it does make them look rather lazy for not stepping up, and i think they see that a good game can sell well on the system now so it would benefit them to take their time and try not to get so frustrated. Forget this we are busting our butt trying to make this work and it aint even going to sell well, is probably what they said.

LFD is awesome and all PS3 only owners are missing out on. It would be nice if they released those games on the PS3 i guess, as long as there not a mess technically.

well theyre not plenty of developers, theyre Valve and theyre their own business and can be conducted however they see fit. obviously The Orange Box was a debacle but if they never develope for the PS3 again...thats their business. they already admitted that its hard to develope for the ps3 which is why left 4 dead wasnt on the ps3. they could develope for the ps3 anytime but if you want some half assed game to complain about, thatll be the only outcome. OR they can travel the road theyre on now and actually LEARN to develope on the PS3 to make quality games and in the meantime you can complain about their lack of supporting Sony and the PS3

It's Valve's loss, from a business standpoint they lost millions, but they are financially so secure it doesn't matter.

In the end, they can do what they want, and that's fine. Keep the PC guys happy.

Hmmm...

"Valve writer Chet Faliszek told CVG:

"We thought that the Orange Box didn't put our best foot forward with the PS3 community. We don't want to do something like that again on the PS3. We want to give PS3 owners the best possible experience."

So according to Chet, the best experience Valve can give to PS3 owners is no games? Am I the only one that finds this a bit ... odd?

Or maybe they are a slightly bigger studio and have the resources to port games over themselves and not outsource the ps3 version to EA which screwed it up.

Maybe. Just maybe.

As with most PS3 users, the moment L4D is announced for it, the "not that I care for L4D" and "I'll just buy it for my PC" will fade into memory... Feel free to quote me on this.

That's how Sony entered this generation, and while they've realized they've been smacked around and plunked firmly into third place for their arrogance, Cows aren't as smart as Sony in this case. Sadly, that's not saying much...

Played both. I use my gaming PC several times a week - have for almost two decades... I'm a PC gamer. My favorite game - period - is a PC game... My two favorite games of the past six years are either PC exclusive or PC/console games (Civ 4 and ME2). I guess I haven't swallowed whatever hermit Koolaid you have because, go figure, I find HL2 to be pretty darned similar on the 360 when compared to the PC.

am i the only one who thinks valve looks stupid with all these "we must get better at developing for ps3 talk", when every other developer out there is making equal multiplats and in some cases now even better on ps3. i mean these guys act like their the gods of the gaming industry, guess what valve you've had three good games imo half life 1, half life 2, and team fortress 2. thats it, all other valve games are nothing special/average games imo.

They are just fronting its pretty blatant like he stated if they really gave a damn they would have announced some titles. They must be trying to stay in Sony's good books for some reason tho? Technology perhaps? They are full of it to be honest.... I own a lot of Valve games they are great but they messed up when it came to the PS3.

yeah but its still strange a potential 30mil userbase thats prime for their games untapped :S i just find that a little strange.Hell in this day and age i think EA could actually port it better than thye did back in the day xD.Valve makes money, and everyones happy.

Thats the way i see it..If the port handnt been so bad and rushed it would have been a really enjoyable experience imo.

I don't know why people insist on trying to make fly the, "Valve is a small game dev. company", bit.

Valve is not small, they have, according to Chet Faliszek, 250 employees.

You wanna know what "small" is? Small is BRINK'S game developer, SPLASH DAMAGE. They have approx 60 developers, and guess what? Their game will be on 3 platforms (PC, PS3 and XBOX 360).

I was going to throw GEARBOX in the mix, but they aren't as small as they used to be..they have approx 170 employees. That's still significanly less than 250, and they too have no problem developing for all three platforms. In fact, remember when they, Randy Pitchford, called them out on their "fanboy'im"?

Gearbox: Valve "foolish" to snub PS3

Valve can make a PS3 game whenever they want...not that they have to, I just don't like hearing that tired excuse. It's clear Valve doesn't want to make games for the PS3 and that's fine, but from now on, they should just shut up about the PS3.

nowhere did i say valve is the smallest gaming company but they are a relatively small developer with its whopping 250 employees. im glad you think thats such a generous amount when gearbox has 170 and SD having 60 (which by chance has the technical backing of Bethesda software). theyre nowhere in the area on having over 7000 like EA or vivendi with its close to 3500. Valve has been developeing PC games for years and the PS3 has a totally different design while the 360 has relative hardware. why is that so hard to understand? is it really hard to believe that a company thats been developing on PCs for over 15 years MIGHT have some issues with developing on the PS3? Gearbox has had significant relationships with the other gaming companies through this gen and last....you dont see such credentials with Valve, with that said. do you actually WANT half assed ports from the pc to the PS3? or do you want a quality game that you can actually play without having to vomit every 5 minutes??

Who they are winning back? If they made a game, and that game was good for the PS3.. People will buy it.. Regardless of what people think they said, and if people take it personally and boycott.. Well they are little kids that some how think the product they own some how represents them.

"We messed up" isn't a quote from Valve, it's an paraphrasing of what they said. There wasn't anything keeping them from writing "We didn't put out best foot forward" in the article title, except for the fact that their version would get more hits.

I freaking hate internet video game "journalism".

It still boggles my mind why anyone would want to play a Valve game on a console.

nowhere did i say valve is the smallest gaming company but they are a relatively small developer with its whopping 250 employees. im glad you think thats such a generous amount when gearbox has 170 and SD having 60 (which by chance has the technical backing of Bethesda software). theyre nowhere in the area on having over 7000 like EA or vivendi with its close to 3500.

The difference between Valve and EA or Vivendi is EA and Vivendi are publishers their 7000 or 3500 employees are made up of multiple development houses, most of them probably smaller than Valve. Valve is not small, it just that they operatate like a small company because they don't answer to anyone but themselves mostly.

250 emloyees for an independent developer is not small. Obviously its not 5000 or 7000, but since when does it take thousands or hundreds of people to port games? For an independent game developer, again, Valve is nowhere near small. In actuality, 250 employees, and growing might I add, is actually fairly large, and they certainly aren't short of financial resources.....they are swimming in money.

Second, Valve has had other developers port every Half Life game to the Playstation brands, and most of the expansion games as well. If it was really a question of "manpower resources", Valve could obviously do this.

Third, I'm wondering, did you actually play The Orange Box PS3 version? I own it. The game is AAA quality. I bought it a year ago when I purchased my PS3. Some people spoke negatively about the game, but it plays fine. I'm assuming patch-fixes were put in long ago.

At anyrate, like I said, you don't need to be EA's size to port games. Valve is more than large enough, and furthermore, EA wants to port all of their games to every console. So in other words, slvrraven9, not only is Valve not small and has has plenty of employess (more than most), not only does Valve have spitloads of money.....but Valve has resource backing themselves, from EA. lol Do you now see the fallacy in your point now, slvrraven9?

There's actually another reason that's not related to porting/developing capabilities or abilities.

While I can't prove it, I'm 90 percent sure that Valve is paid and/or incentivised by Microsoft....at least for the L4D games.
