Looks like Nintendo's switch concept is a success you're seeing more copy PC devices.

Would be nice. Imagine a portable system that can play everything on pc and not being stuck with 2003 resolution.
Remember the steam console failed and that's back when people use to make a hobby of building budget PCs, how is he going to make a handheld amid a silicon shortage?
Valve need to find a way to bring the price down.
If it's super high priced might as well use a laptop.
Faces the other problem of Steam... basically having no quality control where a quarter of the shit you buy won't work. Especially older titles happily dumped on the service for users to fix.
Like, that's suppose to be the advantage of console, no fucking about.
wonder if it's going to be vr ready or did value just announce they moving on from the index like they did steambox and steam gamepad. those vr guys are going to be Piss if it doesn't do vr cause they are in love with Value because of HL:A
@mane_basic: Wouldn't make much sense. Index use base stations in a fixed location, with PC centric VR titles generally being quite demanding.
Although admittedly is it possible to run Alyx on a GTX 970, albeit struggle.
Hope its affordable.
Valve's device may have all the features that PC gamers like, but if it is priced in a way that a vast majority of gamers will not buy, it will be a dealbreaker. To sell its product, Valve needs to learn the lessions of the PS3 and the Nintendo 3DS.
Well, at least they're trying. More than I can say for most other companies.
Everyone loves to hate on the winner, that's for sure. So much salt in here.
Can't see it being affordable or a success, honestly, but sure: I love the idea of a Switch that does more than my Switch
Yeah this is kind of where my head is at.
Love my Index
Love my Steam Controller
Love my Steam Link
Didn't need a Steam machine but I'm sure I'd have been happy with one of those, but again...they were contracted out to third-party manufacturers.
I would/will probably love this.
Considering that such a system will most likely use SteamOS, I can tell that it'll need a lot of bribes if it's gonna have an actual launch library (as in, literally anything other than Valve games and random indie titles that very few people care about).
IMO, i think this should be what the Steam handheld launch lineup should look like:
Rune Factory 5 (Marvelous, Inc.)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS Force* (Bandai Namco Studios, Inc.)
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (Square-Enix)
Gundam Breaker 3 Break Edition (Ilinx)
A publishing deal for modern ports of older Armored Core games (From Software)
A sequel to The Darkness II (Digital Extremes & Top Cow Comics)
Babylon's Fall and the next 2-3 non-Nintendo non-Apple games from PlatinumGames
SoulCalibur VI, with Valve funding a new Season Pass (Bandai Namco Studios, Inc.)
Ace Combat ZERO remaster (Bandai Namco Studios, Inc., formerly Project ACES)
Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 (Bandai Namco Studios, Inc., formerly Namco Tales Studio)
*Maxi Boost ON would be more ideal, though I doubt that a Steam handheld could handle that game

A bunch of niche games that wont sell?
So basically a high-end Steam/Game Pass portable device. Nintendo is doomed.
Alienware has also been busy developing a handheld similar to this.
Switch games are for the most part over priced ports ... so it really limits my enthusiasm for the system.
A decently priced handheld PC that can run Steam games (as well EGS, Origin etc) would be amazing. It doesn't need to be much stronger then a Switch for me. I'd mostly be playing older games indies .

Was thinking more along the lines of Valve paying for Linux ports of games that will never see the light of day on PC. And I wouldn't call PlatinumGames' games niche, considering that their action games can best be described as "Devil May Cry but better".
Gundam Extreme VS is probably THE best franchise when it comes to 3D anime brawlers, and I think part of that has to do with being developed by the same studio that has worked on the Tekken and SoulCalibur franchises, as in veterans in the fighting game genre. Also mentioned Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 since it seems to be put on a higher pedestal than Tales of Vesperia, and if i'm perfectly honest, Valve pumping money into Bandai Namco Studios will most likely be the only thing that will tell them to keep making PC games moving forward. At least then, Valve funding their PC ports might allow them to also develop lower spec games intended to be played on the SteamOS powered handheld device.
My point being that bribery will be necessary to give the SteamOS handheld an actual launch library and I think it'd make sense for them to bribe their way into Linux versions of games that would otherwise never be on PC.
I've been looking into a PC to hook up to my TV for a while now but don't really know what route to go. I know I want higher end and I have no interest of switching parts or building, so this might be a viable solution. However I doubt the price will be relevant to what you actually get and I may not feel like it gives a proper value. Add in the fact I don't care much about gaming on the go and I would keep it docked the entire time and I'm just not sure how I feel about this. I'll need to hear/see more but unless it's a beast that can be docked and supports a large library of controller enabled games from the start I'm very likely not interested.
With GPU prices are on sky. i hope valve make something akin to affordable PC like system.
We need to have games running on the CPU again, like the olden days.
Its WIP..kinda but not really :P:
https://airlied.blogspot.com/2021/04/doom-vulkan-lavapipe.html
I don't think we are going to get CPU rendering back in gaming though. even a pretty basic bog standard GPU is still going to give any CPU a bit of a thrashing in graphics rendering performance.
On Topic and assuming the rumour is true: valve have my undivided attention. I have wanted to get such a device. I even thought about backing the smachZ kickstarter (didn't in the end and that's now cancelled).
GPD has done some good stuff, the Aya Neo also looks interesting. Its a small market but it also seems to be slowly growing.
If valve actually pull off what the smachZ was trying to do then it could be a very neat device. in terms of library, even on just linux/SteamOS alone, there are a shed ton of games that are great for portable play available.
It's great to see these devices as another option to play PC games. now it comes in desktop, laptop and portable flavours.
A lot of work is needed on the UI side for OSs though. Steam has BPM which is ok but needs some TLC. It would be great if MS had a BPM mode for windows too. Maybe take another look at tablet mode and see if it can be adjusted (make it more controller friendly).
Just to keep expectations in check though (and again assuming this rumour is true): i don't think valve are going to try and compete with the switch in terms of sales. i don't think they are going to take a hit on the hardware (and hopefully they also don't lock the hardware down). i think this will be a 750-800 bucks device.
When the console thing didn't work, we also learned all they did was try to bring third party partners to push it, so blame deflected. If they go same route, who will they partner with?
Portable PC gaming devices is far from new. I have an old GPD Windows 10, looks like a 3ds. There's another out there thats been around for a while that looks like a Switch and even has removable controllers like the switch does.

Valve stated they aren't partnering with 3rd parties since that's kinda what killed off the Steam machines to begin with. That and the fact that game performance was worse with Linux than Windows. Trying to maintain a game performing OS is a lot more than a company like Valve could handle without a lot more serious investments, expertise and a lot more time.
