I followed the hype of this game a couple of years before release but cooled off on it when the reviews came in. I just played through the whole thing + all the side stuff and thought it was excellent. I actually thought every story beat was awesome (minus the first 10 minutes) and the Bloodsouls Lite gameplay was pretty good. I was very engaged throughout (did a pacifist run my first time) and am very much scratching my head at all the poor reviews. (70 Metascore)

What did you guys think of it? I had very few issues with it at all and actually really liked it.

Yup, definitely a very underrated game. I enjoyed in immensely. Loved the power/pacifist path.

Hmm, I forgot about it I have to admit. Looked so-so. But you could choose to suck the blood of just about anyone in the game, no? That did sound like a pretty fun mechanic. Perhaps I should pick it up instead of Red Dead, which I feel will suck the blood out of me rather than the other way around.

I bought it a while ago for cheap, but haven't really dug into it yet. Seemed decent enough, and it started to open up once I reached the hospital. Tons of people to talk to, and quests with lots of choices, it seemed like.

@Shmiity: Loved it. Of course, I am all into this style of rpg. Also was big into vampire the masquerade bloodlines. Vampyr one of those games that didn't get hype from the mainstream. Other rpgs that got panned but I thought were amazing were Kingdom Come Deliverance, Alpha Protocol (last gen) and the Technomancer. There was faults and quirks sure, but like gothic 1 and 2 were unique and engaging. Vampyr had all those traits too.

It’s one of those games I avoided at launch since it was supposed to be buggy as hell. Since then I have been meaning to pick it up, since it should a much more stable experience now, but haven’t gotten around to do it... guess that is the danger of releasing a buggy game these days, it will ( and should) hurt it’s longtime sale.

It seemed like a great combination of Dark Souls like combat with Telltale's style storytelling and moral choices, plus I absolutely loved its setting.

The game was not without flaws though, for example you could find yourself in combat situations you couldn't finish because you were not the right level, but the game forced you into combat anyway.

There are definitely a lot of moral choices in the game. What was really unique is that you could kill of questgiver NPCs, so people that still had a role to play in the story, you could kill them off.

Or what was even more fun was getting to know someone, so their blood would yield more XP, and then kill them off.

I enjoyed it, one of my favourite games of last year. Guess the dev's didn't give out enough freebees to the gaming "journalists".

I haven't played Vampyr yet but I will eventually. I love the idea of vampyer/werewolf/centaur games. I wonder if the same is true for the following two games that I have not played yet: Prey: Mooncrash and Mutant Year Zero. Both those titles were hardly mentioned by anyone in 2018. And they both seem good. I'm impressed by what I have seen of those games but it was like nobody had the energy or time to talk about them or something. Probably not enough of a marketing budget for the media to care.

I love threads like this because you encourage people to try something they may have overlooked. We should have more sleeper hit/surprise hit threads in SW.

@R4gn4r0k: I didn't run into any impossible scenarios on my first play. I didn't eat anyone and was able to make my way through well enough with the minimal EXP. It's not easy being 4-7 lvls lower than everything but it was fun!

I got about 4-5 hours and loved the setting, and what unfolded of the story... The actual combat was largely shit, but that didn't deter me. I'll have to get back into the game.

@lundy86_4: I found the "dont eat anyone" path to have an incredibly satisfying story arch. Minus the first 10 minutes and some moments at the end, the story had me hooked. I was into it. The combat is a not-as-good Souls style, but I actually thought each boss was decent and challenging. The enemies types arent super varied, though.

I had no issues with the Soulsborne combat other than repetitive enemy types. I thought it worked just fine and I didn't encounter many issues at all. It just wasn't quite as tight or stylish as Bloodsouls

Just Youtube it. The combat looks basic. I guess I will have to actually try it to fully understand its mediocrity.

Eh, no.

It's sitting around 70 metacritic which is about right. The game has flashes of brilliance but things like the dated graphics and shit gameplay hold it back from being anything special.

They should allow for mods ^__^ I know there is a great love for vampyr games and maybe people can tweak the combat.

I didnt finish it. I was forcing myself to play through it most of the time as I found it to be very boring story wise and the gameplay seemed quite shallow and clunky. It also seemed like there were small but significant parts of the main story missing, particularly parts related to two of the main characters relationship throughout the game.

5/10 game IMO

@Shmiity: My income dropped to nill, so it was one of the only games I bought last year. Really looking forward to it-looks totally awesome.

And I'm plying Remember Me right now, their first game, and it's (thankfully) awesome too.

I was actually excited for the game. I rented it when it came out and picked up the PS4 edition and just couldn't get into it. I admit, I only gave it less than two hours or so. Maybe I just didn't give it enough time. I sometimes do that when I have a backlog and can't dedicate the time to playing a title.

I might go back and try it now that it is out on gamepass.

I enjoyed it very much, one of my favorite games from last year. The reviews were good enough so that most people who are really interested in Vampires at least checked it out, I would think. I very rarely read reviews of single player games, so I cannot tell you if I agree with the criticisms, but the Metacritic score was high enough not to be a disaster, so in that sense I'm happy with the reviews it got. It's not for everyone and there is a lot of dialogue, it's a slow game for sure so I can understand the mixed reviews and that's fine.

Yeah I thought it was a diamond in the rough. Really sucked me in (haha vampire pun...) during the first hour or two; lots of good writing, voice acting, interesting characters. But I had to stop playing it because there's just too much talking. Idunno I should probably give it a second chance, I do think it's a good game, just not for me.

It was just a little overwhelming when you get to the hospital and there's like 20 people to talk to and they all have literal minutes of dialogue, you could easily just walk around that place for an hour listening to people talk. Which, like I said, is good and all, but I play games so I don't have to socialize, not pretend I am socializing in a game.

The combat is basic but that's not why you get a game like this. It is not half as bad as people make it out to be, people think combat has to be all Dark Souls now if your game has a stamina/energy bar, but that shit existed looooooooooooooong before any of the souls games. It's just your basic action-RPG combat with a mix of melee and Victorian firearms and vampire skills.

Did you go "good" or "bad"?

I know the game doesn't encourage only those two absolutes, but I am curious how you played the game from an alignment perspective.

Thanks for the tips lads, I got the game and am playing it now :). Seems interesting though I'm very early.

Went with hard because it seems to do the most with the games systems. I just hope it won't be too frustrating. But I guess it should be somewhat to make you thirsty for upgrades ;)

The game gets a lot easier once you master combat. If it is still too hard for you, you always have the option to embrace people and get strong fast.

Sounds really interesting...based on the comments here I will look into it (I’m a sucker for vampire games lol—Legacy Of Kain was fantastic on PS1 ,OH the memories!)
