What happened.. Why are certain gamers trying to dismiss whole genres as if they don't exist.

Every time a list of new jrpgs are listed or a game like until dawn (an adventure game) .. They get met with the usual scorne of "they're all crap".

Variety in games lineups should be praised. People have different tastes. PlayStation was deeply rooted in RPGS in the PS1 and PS2 era. PS3 era not so much...til end gen. This influx of different style games niche or not should be celebrated, not dismissed.. Or is all you people want is steroid space shooter number 931?

I will admit, I don't like halo, gears or fable, but I won't deny their existence, I won't deny that there are people that love them... Why are jrpgs and adventure games being treated like they don't exist. Whenever list wars is mentioned, a whole vocal crowd of bro gamres will wave off the genre and say nasty things or racist comments.. It's bullshit.

BOTTOM Line: EVERY GAME EXISTS, DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM. VARIETY IS GOOD.

ADVENTURE GAMES, JPRGS, INDIES, SIMULATIONS, SPORTS GAMES, STEALTH AND STRATEGY GAMES ALL EXIST!

Why do i even need to make this statement in 2015? Are certain segments so obsessed with halo and gears that anything else doesn't exist to them?

People pulled the same thing with INDIES last year. The ps4 got tons of them and the bone not so much...all of a sudden "Indies are trash. Indies don't exist, blah blah blah... " What age group are these people as they sure act juvenile.

People don't like change, check out Rare for proof. Viva Pinata, Kameo, Banjo N&B, PD Zero and although a bit generic Kinect sports all decent games, but because they aren't same as the N64 games Rare gets bashed.

I think Until Dawn could be good, although depends if it is delivered with similar quality to Beyond.

You also have to consider that games are expensive, and a lot of gamers specifically casuals tend to only buy 1-2 titles a year such as COD or Fifa, but certainly somewhere like system wars that has people really interested in games, embracing variety wouldn't hurt.

Sadly gamers are very negative people primarily due to owning consoles.

I was so hyped about playing it and to see what the genre has to offer but after playing it I found to be one of the most overrated/boring/overhyped game ever. From then I told myself I would never play any jrpg's ever again.

I felt the same way chumling, played them all, apathy, put me off JRPG's almost wholly.

Thankfully, having binge bought shit off steam and coming across YS, a very good series of action RPG's, they don't all appear to be pishy poo.

I play literally every single genre except for MMO grind RPGs and JRPGs. I used to play some JRPGs ranging from Vandal Hearts through Vagrant Story to Front Mission 3 and while I enjoyed some I'd attribute it to transitional phase of my life. Now since I've seen through the limitations of the genre I'm allergic to them as I see a ginormous cliche gallore as far as home consoles are concerned. I hate romanticism in art, on the other hand I love avant-garde and postmodernism. And I can't get that from JRPGs. I also dread the fact they're usually done in one graphical convention. Overexcessive exposition and overabundance of cut scenes removing you from the experience are also anathemas of gaming to me. Moreover, lack of any game altering dialogue choice and usually lack of open world freedom (I realize some JRPGs offer that, tho) in an immersive environment is a turn off.

Handheld JRPGs on the other hand can at times be quite simply brilliant.

Having said all that, that doesn't make me automatically like every WRPG by default. Or any Western game for that matter. I'm all for meritocracy. I try to give credit when it's due. When there would be a JRPG transcending the genre clichés I'd give it a spin. But then again since reliance on closed codex of clichés is what defines JRPGs, that'd probably mean that that game isn't a JRPG anymore.

Until Dawn is another interactive movie like The Order and JRPG's are something which appeal to a much smaller and cornered market, not to mention the industry is constantly flooded with them so it's totally over-saturated.

That is why people dismiss these games, they're not exactly accessible, they appeal to a very specific kind of person that most people are not and general interest surrounding them is very low. Are you really so mystified and butthurt as to why people are way more over the moon for the Xbox One library this year than the PlayStation 4 that you had to make your own thread about it? Most indie games are trash and like JRPG's the market is also over-saturated with them, but on a much larger scale, that is why they are looked down upon. It just seems like you can't accept the fact that people want the Xbox One's library more and it's bothering you, like it's actually irritating you...

Agreed. I'd be interested to see if at the time of release or even now a certain Damage Controller thought Skies of Arcadia was Weaboo trash.

Hypocrisy

Oh shit would you look at that, Grandia 2 is apparently considered a classic. I wonder if it was due to the effects of radiation poisoning.

I'm a collector, and the collector value of those games is quite high, I also got them for the price premium of what ended up being $0. Go back to that thread and look at what I said from that point of view, then go to Ebay and look at what those games sell for.

Nice try though lol...

P.S. Allow me.

Some are closed minded.

Its not a bad thing if someone dismisses one or two genre but because all platforms are better in some genres it causes this type of thing.

For me PC rules RTS type games , PS rules JRPGs , Xbox FPS.

Some gamers are closed minded or they play one game in a genre, they don't like it all games in that genre are trash.

People have preferences but it's good to try something different. I am not to fond of racing games but I like certain NFS or burnout games

Xbox hardly rules FPS because that genre is overpopulated in all platforms minus Wii U. That's really all Xbox owners generally play though and I do consider them to be the most close minded of all gamers.

@uninspiredcup: love Ys. sumbled on them in a steam sale...i have a good number of them now between steam and my vita. i think a new one came out fairly recently on steam. must pick it up soon.

i finshed celceta on the vita...i must finish off origins and get tucked into the rest of them (though what i have seen of Ys 1 and 2 is not encouraging :S).

*sigh* another series to tackle. thatll take a while. its hard work being a gamer :P.

on topic...aye variety is a good thing. i try many different types of games. sometimes i hate them...sometimes i get a very pleasent surprise but its good to try them out.

Variety is cool, shitty games are not cool.

Maybe certain games or even type of games are dismissed because they are garbage. For instance loot rpgs aren't fun video games, they are testament to how much a player who loves them shits enjoys being a fucking servant.

Seriously. I don't praise genres I don't like. Why should I? For variety's sake? Is "variety" going to buy games for me? I don't like JRPGs. This forum is SW. If it hurts your feelings that some people dismiss these types of games I don't know what to tell you. Yes, you acknowledge Halo, Gears, Fable exist. I acknowledge JRPGs exist. But I have absolutely no desire to play them.

Not really. Not when there's always someone, somewhere that likes something that someone else doesn't. You can't label games "shitty" based on critics' opinions or low sales, popular opinions, and you can't find a single game that every person on the planet hates.

So how are you gonna verify with absolute proof that is universally agreed upon that any particular game is bad?

You can't.

I can label games shitty simply by coming to the conclusion that they are shitty.

By your own logic, you can't really call any gamers shitty because there's someone out there that likes them! lol

Well, yes, you're right that opinions are not true or false. But I still think we all know that shitty games exist. We might disagree on which games are shitty and which ones are not but we all think some games are worse than others.

Likely because not all genres appeal to all people? (however Indie is not a genre).

personally I have a huge dislike for sports games, I can hardly see them as games at all, but I don'tthink I ever dismissed them, I simply ignore them when talking genres.

I imagine most people feel like that, some genres they just can't get along with, that don't "click" with them. That is not wrong, it is just the opposite side of having a preference, meaning that there is something you do NOT prefer aswell.

But in reality that was not what you asked TC, was it? I feel like this i some defense of Sonys 2015?

But in any case, the basic premise you have is right. Most often it ends up with "I hate what I can not have" and not genres though, you listed game series in different genres, dismissing genres because they are not prevalent on your platform of choice is fairly idiotic, dismissing them, because they are not your kind of thing is perfectly fine, as long as it is consistant, and based on the gameplay.

And if people would just own up to thier own biases theworld would be better, this hobby with it. Like I stated you will find me disliking sports games, do I dismiss them? No, I simply ignore them, I have no doubt they bring joy and entertainment to alot of people, why I will never understand, if asked I will state how Little I care for them, but I will never seek out discussions about sports games, or look Down on people enjoying them. They are not more or less important then my preferred RPG or FPS, they are not less of a game.

They just don't resolate with me.

In the majority of cases through it is simply people being childish pricks, and a case of "I hate what I can not have" Cows disliked Indies just as much as Lemmings, untill Sony began focusing on Indies, and now it is somehow the shit?" What cahnged? the quality of the games did not, so it has to be the mentality. Early last gen we even saw the opposite, MS embraced Indies, Lemmings claimed thatthey were good, and Cows dismissed them.

That has nothing to do with preference, it has all to do with having a hissy fit ofer the games you can not play. In truth I think that is the answer that is most ccorrect TC, sadly, I suspect you knew it already given how you worded the opening post. Fact is that most gamers are extremely childish, and too cheap to either buy multiple systems, or acknowlage what genres, focuses and types of games are on other platforms are just as good..
