Valve Software boss Gabe Newell has slagged off PS3 calling it "a waste of everybody's time" in a latest attack on the console.

"Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There's nothing there that you're going to apply to anything else. You're not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they've created", Newell told Edge magazine.

"I don't think they're going to make money off their box. I don't think it's a good solution."
It's not the first time Newell has slammed PS3. Earlier in the year he called it "a total disaster on so many levels... I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted".

"I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over", he said in January.

Despite his negative reactions to PS3, Newell says that he thinks PS3 owners who buy The Orange Box are going to be happy with their game experience and that EA - which is handling the PS3 version - will make it a good product.

"But I think it's harder to get it to the same standard as the 360 and PC versions", Newell said.

I hate to say it but this may be big considering that the "King of Optimization" made the statement.

Carmack said basically the same thing. It sucks and these guys are talented developers but are PC developers they are softweare guys the do not design hardware if the did they would be working forhardware companies. what makes me angry is that becuse their games are good it somehow means they know everything about hardware which is not the case especially for pc devs who are constantly given new hardware to cater to what they want to do unlike console developers who need to get right down and know the in and outs of the hardware to maximize performance which PC guys don't usually do. Pc developers see whats coming up in terms of new hardware and develop their game to cater to the hardware they feel will give the best performance, don't get me wrong they still have to do alot of work to optimize and make sure that some lower end systems can play their game to maximize their sales potential but the true experience of the game is usually on the most powerful hardware they have the advantage of the PC world moving so fast they can update the engine to take advantage oif all the bells and whistles of new 3d cars and harware and such.

Basically what I'm saying is the ps3 is designed to get the best possible graphics for as long as possible meaning the architecture is going to be more complicated because it works differently. It doesn't get updated so the harware engineers have to think ahead to different techniqes and possibilities in programming to squeeze as much performance as possible a PC developer may see it as unessisarly complicated because the are used to a much more familiar and streamlined programming environemnt on the PC. Thats fine but seeing as neither developer (carmack or newell) has really spent much time with the console or even released a game remember valve isn't porting the game ea is so exactly what is gabe basing his comment on either limited first hand experience or from second hand heresay both of which don't stand up in my opinion funny how he says something somewhat controversial around the launch of his brand new game just kinda convieniant.

Hideo Kojima and his team seem to think the system certainly is fine and are quite pleased with the results they are getting I honestly think ol gabe here and even carmack may changed their mind even a tiny bit if they spent some time with kojima's team real console devs.

Bottom line PC dev make comment about a console = educated guessing

Why would they? Valve doesn't make exclusively for Microsoft platforms, Valve competes with games for windows live and valve doesn't support the Games for Windows scheme (I think?)

They complain about the CPU that no one knows how to make games for, and have to put alot more money into R&D to get the standard people have come to expect for next gen games.
