VG Chartz: Xbox 360's lead over PS3 shrinking

Pretty much since the PS3 came out, vgchartz.com has been listing the Xbox 360 as having a lead of a little more than 8 million over the PS3, and has only fluctuated slightly every now and then. However, following the PS3's $300 price drop, the 360's lead has shrunk from about 8.5 million to about 7.29 million. That might not sound like a very big difference, but that's that smallest I've ever seen the 360's lead at, so clearly the price cut has made a difference. It'll be interesting to see if the sales race tightens up further over through the Christmas shopping season.

The Slim is the new talk of the town, and the PS3 has also finally broken the $300 barrier. The 360 has remained largely unchanged since launch (save for improved reliability, larger HDD, and an HDMI port), so Microsoft is going to have to do something big to get the spotlight off of the PS3 Slim. A lot of people are giving the PS3 a second look now that it's got a more reasonable price tag, so I don't really think that the cheapo Xbox being $100 cheaper than the Slim wil mean as much now that they're both availible for $300 or less.

You still do realize the PS3's cheapest SKU is still 100 dollars more then the 360's cheapest SKU? Christmas shoppers are stupid and they buy on impulse a lot, what's going to look better? Of course though, many gamers will be askin' for a Slim, I know I won't get one, I'll just buy one later. I expect them to hit about even. No clear winner. Toriko42

The PS3s momentum has been amazing lately. All my friends that own 360s want PS3s and have had rrods all but me lol.

I don't need VGChartz to tell me that the Slim PS3 $299 sold 1 million units in it's first three weeks.

So, I know the 360's lead was dented with that a bit, but we'll just have to see how the holidays work out.

One thing that may help the SLIM is that since 2008, Sony's been putting out HIGH QUALITY AAA Software, and consumers are bound to notice.

Blu-Ray's being cheaper, and sometimes cheaper than some DVD's hleps too (I just got Observe and Report for $15 on Blu!).

More HDTV's that want Blu-Ray's, High Quality AAA Game Software built up, Slim Model to be excited about, and the $299 seems like a great deal.

The fact that the competition's 1st Parties took 2009 less serious may help matters as well.

I still think it's funny that apparently a 120 gig drive is worth 100$.

$40 HDMI Sony Brand Cables.

Bear in mind the 360 uses HDMI 1.2, although the standard is HDMI 1.3.

I'm a good sport though, I will play along.

Assuming Sony's were $60, and M$'s were $50....That $10 difference is funny to you, or what?:)

Every Microsoft console ships with Component cables, the newer Elite does not ship with HDMI cables. But, if I look at the accesories on Best Buy, there's no standalone Microsoft HDMI cable there. There's a HDMI and AV cable package though for $50 though.

Are you sure? Best Buy doesn't list component cables as included, at least I didn't see it when I was looking at the site a few weeks ago. Also, I recall reading a gamespot news story saying they would no longer be included, along with hdmi cables.

Well, I certainly was! But I just checked the Official Microsoft Xbox website -- and they recently updated because the Standard/HD option on the Pro and Elite are no longer there; in fact, the Pro model isn't even listed anymore. Pity.

You can get very good, or even better quality HDMIs for $15. I got a Monster HDMI cable for $15, I think it was a 25% off sale, but it has lasted me for over 3 years now.

PS3 won't pass the 360 anytime soon, 3 years and the dent is only a million? Still quite a few more years until it gets within striking distance.

We all knew this would happen sooner or later. M$ is destined for 3rd this gen.

That is a pity, I thought the pro was the best looking model.

Other than the silver tray, it looks just like the Arcade/Core.

I guess you can think about it this way, in 5 years, you will have a cooler looking 360 than most folk.

The Elite's look used to be appealing, as it made one feel elite, but now it's pretty much the standard 360.

I'm glad through RROD I got to trade my old elite for a Halo 3 360 back in the day. It's cool to have a different model than everyone else. Makes for a good coffee talk.:P

Its not suprising, the real game changing difference in this race is the year's headstart, a year and half in europe.

Idk how reliable vgchartz is, but I predict the lead to be cut down to 4-2 mill by the end of next year

The 360 has about a 7 million unit lead. Assuming there is 4 years left in this gen (being generous) thats 48 months. 7,000,000 / 48 is around 150,000. So every month for the next four years the PS3 needs to outsell the 360 by 150,000. PS3 is already confirmed 3rd.

xbox sold more because most people replaced their broken xbox with a new one.
