After several vgchartz thread being made I decided to calculate the numbers up, the ones we know from NPD, and find how accurate it is. Well apparently VGchartz does not adjust for NPD. There is about a 366,700 discrepancy in a 5 month period between NPD and VGChartz for PS3 numbers alone. I used the months with the biggest sales for the last 2 years. All the numbers are for the PS3 monthly sales.

October 2008

VGchartz 299,010

NPD190,000

November 2008

VGchartz 439,695

NPD378,000

December 2008

VGchartz740,675

NPD726,000

October 2009

VGchartz371,729

NPD320,600

November 2009

VGchartz 840,249

NPD710,000

(For the vgchartz table, go here )

Once you add up the difference between NPD and VGchartz for the 5 months above, the difference comes to the 366,700. That's a 366,700 overstatement over that period of time.To put the number into perspective, it is about 15.77% of the total NPD sales for those same 5 months.

Assuming this same discrepancy applies to other months, we could be looking at a significant figure of error just in NA.

VGCharts factors in all retailes, including Walmart and others that NPD do not factor in. Not saying that VGChartz is definitely right, just saying it's not definitely wrong. Take their results cautiously and roll with it.

For just 5 months?! I'd say that's pretty significant, imagine the annual figure.

Vg is probably more accurate since NPD doesnt count the biggest retailer in america...

They do, they simply estimate it according to trends. It's on their site.

TC find other more accurate worldwide sales site first if you plan to bash VGCharts, it's better then nothing... but hey, 360 still 2nd place on both, VGcharts accuricy might be debetable if console sales will eclipse

So, estimate = right. I see your logic.

Not that I'm defending VgChartz, but your comparison is ridiculous. VgChartz includes Canada and Latin America in its American sales charts, so of course they're going to be higher than NPD's USA numbers. Combine NPD USA with NPD Canada and then account for what little sales come from Mexico and Brazil and then you'll have a fairer comparison.

NPD covers all of North America.

NOD doesn't get reports from all retailers but they don't need too to be accurate. If you get reports from the majority and factor in the other companies market share you get accurate numbers. VGChartz either is either lying about having sources or they are epically failing at the estimating portion so they cannot be used as a source.

Give it up everyone, VGChartz is useless. NPD. Media Create and quarterly earnings reports are the only acceptable sources.

We all do realize that every source has a different way of calculating these numbers. Neither is as accurate as going into every home and manually counting consoles.

Never said it was right but it's not anymore wrong than vgchartz for that case. NPD does gather actual information from other retailers, Wal-Mart does not share this data however.

I believe South America is included in others. In the vgchartz click on America, and you see the US flag on their banner too.

Your analysis assumes that NPD = God and anything not equaling NPD is false by default. Funny to see that all of the VG Chartz numbers are higher. That stat combined with someone actually involved in the business of selling video games stating that NPD tends to be 30% LESS than actual numbers actually makes VG Chartz look better.

No, NPD tracks Canada and the US separately.
