I absolutley hate these video games hurt your chances at having a successful eucation arguments.

My local newspaper wrote a 2 page article on the negative affect of video games.

I play games pretty frequently. Never once have I thought that gaming has affected my school work.

Do any of you feel that your success and failures in school have anything to do with gaming at all??

Depends on the depth of someone's addiction. :P I had a friend who would frequently miss days of school to play the newest released games.

My Dads a full supporter in that argument and it gets very annoying to hear him rant about gaming affecting school and mental health, etc.

There's been a lot of crap like that going on for years, even since the Atari n' NES days. It's just as bad as the "violent video games makes kids violent" heat. I've been playing games since I was literally just one year old and they've never affected me when I was in school, if anything, they made my imagination grow bigger and as a result, I write quite a lot now (mostly medieval fantasy and psychedelic poetry). Most of the people who accuse games for making kids slack in school haven't ever touched one themselves. Sad world. It can happen, sure, I know it does, but not to everyone who plays games and goes to school.

Video games actually helped me. For me the easiest way to prepare for a test was to relax, and video games helped. It probably depends on the person though.

Video games made me smarter. All those games like Total War and Age of Mythology really get you interested in history and all that stuff.

No. But I was lazy in school, barely did any homework. Not because I wanted to play games though, just to avoid it. But I would play video games, or do other stuff in that free time. I think people who cut class when a game is released are stupid though, no offence to anyone who has done that, I have just never seen the point. There is enough time to play at home, maybe not as much as you'd like though.

Yes.

I am a high school student in IT and computer science oriented courses.

Thanks to gaming, I know almost perfectly how to use Windows OSs and how to keep them clean of trash software, how to recognize problems and do troubleshooting, where to put my hands to fix a broken computer, I know what code will work and what will not (although I'm still a newb at this, I only know the basics of C++, HTML, PHP, Java and MySQL), and most important of all, I learned english (we do not have proper english lessons in Italy).

People with no clue about gaming that writes negative effects from gaming can keep their head up their bottom, it doesn't really affect me.

lol I love it when people do that. When MW2 came out, 1/4 of my brothers school were absent. During the flu season, 1/2 were absent.

If you've got buddies to play Modern Warfare 2 with (private matches), then it's one hell of a game!

Video games have no effect on school. the people that play games and get bad grades have priority issues, that is the problem. If they didn't have games, those issues wouldn't go away, they'd simply find something else to distract them. I would know, I was once one of them.

I'm sure they liked the game if they actually skipped school for it.... No one...and I mean NO ONE at school thinks system wars logic.

Oh to be honest I skipped 3 months of my final year in secondary school to play WoW.. though I still aced the final exams looking back on it if I were a less capable student that would have affected me pretty badly.

I think this is what it comes down to. If your the kind of kid that spent hours playing games instead studying even though you had to, and then you get a bad grade, then it's your fault not the games.

back when i was hardcore into EQ/WoW in college i used to skip alot of classes, and halfass alot of assignments. I still got Bs and B+s because i always did well on exams... but i had straight A's prior.

I would have lied. I know, I was a horrible kid. I learned my lesson though, when I got like three Fs back in 6th grade one quarter. Yeah, my priorities changed after that. :P

True, but I can't help that think many share the same fate as I did except can't retain knowledge like I do. (I remember stuff for quite some time after I've heard it twice)

I can tell you now that my university was affected the day Halo 3 launched. Something like half the male student demographic was mysteriously absent.

People have been complaining about the newest form of media since forever. Greek philosophers thought that poetry had the same effects as some people complain about video games. Food for thought.

Its been along time since ive been in school. When i was in high school, i wanted to play games all the time and got pissed when i had to study or go to school. I would say yes, school was a interruption to my game playing.

Word, Plato was kind of a jerk. Part of the reason I like Aristotle more is because he didn't hate on art. :) But no, I would have been screwed in high school if I hadn't been naturally capable (I did stop doing homework for calculus eventually, but seriously, how many times can one be expected to expand a Taylor series? weirdly enough I ended up pseudo-TA'ing when our teacher was gone). Play EQ a whole lot, but never did badly, and managed to have some sort of a social life, too. I did screw up in college a lot, but that was due in no part to video games (didn't play at all in college actually--maybe that was my problem!).
