Link Think of the last scary movie you saw. Seriously think about it. Can you name one? I can't. Think of the last few scary games you played. Can you name a few? I can: F.E.A.R, RE4, Fatal Frame 2, and Eternal Darkness. Your thoughts?

I agree with your theory. When I played CONDEMNED I made the same comment to my brother. Its a lot easy to get wrapped up in a video game horror world than a movie horror world. It actually takes quite a bit of skill to make a good scary movie because its so easy to not get involved in the world. I have a lot of friends though who are "scared" of any movie with any horror elements. I guess it depends on how jaded you are. The last good horror movie I saw was probably THE OTHERS. It has to have something more than just jump scares to really work well. That movie that came out about the ventriloquist lady had some decent scenes and was kind of freaky but I wouldn't say it was good. RE4 wasn't scary IMO. With all that ammo to back you up and the science freak setting it was just a bunch of jump scares in an action genre. It was scarier when it was more about survival and counting each bullet.

Saw3. sucked btw. well actually it was 28 days later but saw3 was the newer one. I've played Fear, condemned, suffering and STALKER and they aren't the same thing. I think my mind set is different when i play games. I might get scared at some initial jump moment but after that i'm more about finding a way to kill the thing. basically once the creature is seen all my fear is gone and i'm even somewhat looking at it like a game again. for a scary movie i think i allow myself to stay it the movie a little more. maybe that's just me.

I agree, Videogames are more engaging in general. They have the advantage and when a S/H type of game is done right, no movie comes close.

FEAR uses ingame cinematics and sounds to keep up the scary atmosphere. One moment that really cought me by surprise was when i walked up a ladder and the scary little girl was right there. I really gasped and moved quickly. she was gone when i looked back.

Fear is one of the games where I was much more uneasy during it's downtime. once the action started i was completely out of that atmosphere and i think that is why i think most action type games don't do as good horror as the movies.  though close.

While I've unfortunately never played some of the 'classic' horror games like Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, Eternal Darkness or the original Resident Evils, I must say that I've had far more freaky experiences//WTF moments in gaming than in movies.

Anyone played the first Clock Tower for SNES? There weren't really many 'OMG-A-ZOMBIE-LEAPT-OUT-AT-YOU-BLARGH' moments considering the genre it's in, but that game still freaked the hell out of me. The suspense was superbly done.

Also, though it's not really a horror game, I have to say that there were a few damn freaky scenes/concepts in killer7. Curtis Blackburn, the old assassin/pedophile/child organ trader, anyone?

STALKER is a great scary game. Did a much better job freaking me out than FEAR did. I agree with Days , though. Recent horror films are hardly scary at all. They just try to gross you out. Which is a really childish tactic, to say the least. 28 Days Later was the last great horror flick that I could remember.

Last film to scare me was the grudge. Last game to scare me was F.E.A.R which had some similar elements to the grudge.

yeah that scene i mentioned was early in the game so it was still scary. Condemned was more scary throughout but still the action parts mostly took me out of the atmosphere though. I agree with TheCrazed420 , most of the horror movies today aren't scary. they are gorefests. it seems like kids these days want to see it all which can be gross but you lose some of the psychological fear and build up that made the classics so good.

I think I remember that scene, but in a different way to you:

You are at the top of the ladder,
and you press use to turn around to climb dow. The camera jerks awkwardly as you do this and as it sets you see the girl at the point where you were standing. You then slide down the ladder in fear and at the bottom the cannibal guy is just behind the ladder. Two scary moments in one scene =
