Seemed like an interesting thread that could generate discussion but unfortunately it was locked due to the TC not being high enough level. What he said:

Voice acting works well with franchises like Halo and Resident Evil, but there are plenty of games that really don't need it. A lot of people have been waiting to hear someone talk in the Zelda series for a while, but those games don't really have cinematic cutscenes like in COD, and there are plenty of times when the story or objectives are explained and at the end the character asks you if you need the info repeated, and I think having to repeat cutscenes like that would be annoying. Also it's nice to skip through the talking when it's not needed.

S. Miyamoto said he would never put too many cutscenes in Zelda games because it may make the gameplay less epic, and if you find yourself plowing through enemies and waiting for the next cutscene, it makes the game less enjoyable.

In Kirby's Epic Yarn, I think I'd rather just read the words than having that annoying narrator read it for me. But that game really is targeted towards younger gamers, and a more mature narrator would be less suitable.

Does anyone else agree?conkertheking1

Personally I agree. It depends on the game. Nintendo games with VA would make me die a little.

And what does he mean, Zelda doesn't have cutscenes? It has cutscenes all the time, with cinematic camera angles etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvfcSXLRGFY

As a Sony fanboy with the majority of my PS1 games featuring voice acting, Nintendo is so far behind on this. Not having VA in a game at this day in age is just a sign of how backwards their thinking is.

It's simple, decent voice acting costs moolah. Why spend the moolah if your game will sell bajillions and doesn't need the voice acting? Like Angry Birds or Zelda.

If voice acting benefits the game, I'm all for it...but it does depend on the game. An Epic like Zelda would be first on my list to add voice acting, but I've heard it years before...a small segment of internet fans don't ever want to hear the protagonists voice ever. I don't agree with that super old argument from N64 dayz, it's like reading a book and then watching the movie later to me. Whatever though, I doubt this is going to change in the future. :P

Also, this argument I remember seeing from PSOne vs. N64 debates, lol. I saw them again in PS2-GC-Xbox gen...lol.

Depends on the game. If bioware decides to take out voice acting in mass effect, for example, guess how many people will flip out.

But overall, voice acting done right can add a lot to a game.

If a game does have voice-acting then it better be good.

That being said not all games need voice-acting.

I feel this way as well. Zelda with VA wouldn't be a Zelda game.

I think Zelda could bebefit from having okami-esque voice-acting.

past that though, I would rather Zelda not have voice-acting.

Every game should have voice acting even Zelda, Should Link talk no should Gordon Freeman talk no I'm not against a silent hero but the world around our hero should talk.

Voice acting gives me a special feeling I can not describe it. When I play through Zelda I want to claw my eyes because it is like a novel.

Yeah, that would make sense if all of their games didn't have VA... So you're wrong.

I'll re-post this. Voice-overs are an integral part of WRPGs. A great voice-over actor can have you laughing your head off. Mordin from ME2, and Kalkstein from TW1.

For some reason, most of the time it's English dubbed Japanese games that have the lamest voice acting, although there are exceptions (MGS, RE, etc).

Same with Anime.

You all seem to have forgotten that you can make a lot more complex NPC interactions when the game doesn't have VA at all, so you could make those plentiful and very complex conversation outcomes in RPG games, for example.

I enjoy voice acting, but for some classics game series like Zelda I think it would be weird. Its been text for 25 years, keep it that way.

It really does depend on the type of game, but by modern standards, you really need to shell out for good voice acting. What kind of game would Fallout 3, or GTA or Uncharted be without the amazing cast? And you can't say Liam Neeson's smooth and comforting Irish tones didn't make Fallout 3 a million times better then if it was voice free like the old Fallout games, even if you hated everything else.

It's not just the voice acting it's the writing. I enjoyed the voice actor for Nathan Dracke because of the clever witty lines written for him. But that same voice actor is in assasins creed and price of persia and when I hear him in those games its just whatever because the writing is blah.
