Head honcho of Square Enix Yoichi Wada has admitted that he has no idea where the Final Fantasy series should go from here. Accepting that the latest instalment in the long running RPG saga, Final Fantasy XIII, was met with a mixed reception, Wada said that the series might have to change dramatically in the future if it's to stay relevant.

"When it comes to the customers' reaction to the quality of the game, some value it highly and some are not very happy with it," Wadasaid in an interview withGamasutra.

"I think this is a product that was able to meet the expectations for those who know Final Fantasy," he said. "There are all kinds of games around in the market today. Should Final Fantasy become a new type of the game or should Final Fantasy not become a new type of game?

"The customers have different opinions. It's very difficult to determine which way it should go."

Final Fantasy XIII released earlier this year on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, making this the first multiplatform entry in the main series. It was criticized for being too restrictive and too linear, for having a rigid progression, and for having a battle system that took away from any player participation. While there was a sizeable majority of gamers who like Final Fantasy XIII, most people are known to have expressed their dissatisfaction with the title. The schizophrenic title has the lowest Metascore for any main instalmentin the series.

However, Wada was quick to add that the game has sold 5 million copies already, and that it looks to sell many more in the years ahead.

"Looking at the numbers alone, it is pretty good, because we were able to release the latest Final Fantasy in all three markets of Japan, United States and Europe in a very short period of time, and we were able to reach 5 million units rapidly - and I think this product will grow further."

Let's just hope that the next title in the series will be more properly able to realise the potential hidden away in Final Fantasy XIII. There's a very good game hidden away in there somewhere. It just needs to be nurtured and developed properly now.GamingBolt

SOURCE

How about giving it a rest, Wada? You've messed around with the formula way more than you should have, and the result is that the brand's equity is greatly diminished. Final Fantasy is fast losing relevance, it's losing ground to WRPG's, and most of all, it's losing relevance. How about you guys think the next title through carefully, and give us a game that we'll actually enjoy properly? I'm sorry, but Final Fantasy XIII isn't the game you kept me waiting for so many years.

I miss the great old FFs (FF7, FF9 & FFX). I hope Atlus with their Persona franchise revive the greatness of JRPGs.

It's not a bad game... I mean, it was pretty good, just nowhere near as good as we've come to expect from the franchise. And this one was particularly bad, it was almost on rails. I wish we could get something like Final Fantasy VI again :(

Well, you could always try out Dragon Quest. Games on the DS are mostly JRPG's, and they're really good too.

The Tactics Advance series is the wrong direction

I don't think they have it in them to recreate the magic that was the original

I'd say, let the Tactics series requiescat in pacem before it's besmirched any further

SE needs to just look back at the great things they did from FF1 - FFX, throw in some new gameplay mechanics along an interesting story and they'll surely make the next FF title a great one..

I think they're trying too hard to keep Final Fantasy 'relevant' as a series, when there is no need.

They are on life support. Anyway, that was for a last gen console. This gen I have only enjoyed LO. ToV was a disappointment. As is FF13. That is not a healthy list. Compare it to DS and PSP.

They should get the whole development team to go back and play all the older Final fantasys and take notes. Maybe they'll spot the patterns and recurring themes within the highly praised series.

I didn't like X for it's characters (especially the irritating Rikku) and XII had the worst story and battle system in the series... Hey... why isn't VII in your list?

It's just a matter of opinion, and I am not undermining what FFVII did, but I just didn't find it to be all that good. *dodges bullet*

Well yeah, I mean, I do prefer VIII out of the two. At times I felt like saying "Who the hell is Cloud in love with?! Sephiroth or Tifa, because he seems to be more obsessed with Sephiroth!!" Haha! :D

Haha, that's true. Same goes for Zack, I guess... He seems to be more obsessed with Sephiroth rather than Aerith. :P I think Sephiroth was a "shady" character. :P

I was saying this before FFXIII had been released, I'm really not surprised to hear about the backlash concerning FFXIII, it's a franchise that is becoming more and more irrelevant in a day and age of Mass Effects and Fallouts. Square-Enix as a whole needs to evolve, they haven't made more than a handful of titles worth playing this entire generation.

They did make the series more relevant with FFXII imo, they changed up the gameplay a good bit and i personally loved that game. Then with FFXIII they went back to the same ol' formula, altough it did have a good combat system and looked beautiful. And it was one of the harder FF's in a while it was still far too linear during the main story.

I do think its an awesome game in its own way, but there's much better FFs/JRPGs out there. Maybe they should listen to all the fans (and i mean real fans not the "omg you putted it on another console QQ and it ruinzed it" supposed fans).

Just stop making them more for the girl gamer and the male characters are to pretty and look gay remember FF10, FF10 2 & 12

How about changing the style to a more gritty futuristic setting like some of the awesome japanese manga, like ghost in the shell or Akria

Or a Final Fantasy like FF 7 Advent Children

Or maybe a FF 9 style game

Just stop with the cheesy love storys and emo kids

I personally think that Sephiroth is overrated. His motive wasnt explained that good and he says absolutely nothing before you fight him in the end. Weird. Also, I think Cloud is a great character, not because of this 'emo' crap I see on the net, but because of the fact his character is developed very well. Also, I know it really isnt popular but the main villain in FF4 (Golbez) is pretty interesting as far as FF villains go.

Here's an Idea.

START FRESH.

Dump FF for a while, you can come back to it later.

Create a new idea, and use all that talent to make an awesome new game.

I don't know about anyone else, but doing the same title for so long would be very boring indeed.

To be honest it's just the stupid "Americanised" look of the characters that has put me off the more recent games.

The character designs are loosing the more traditional Chinese or Japanese Manga look that I thought worked well in the previous game and are slowly looking more and more like the bad character art from game covers back in the 80s and 90s.

It's clear they've tried to make it look more "western"to supposedly appeal to a larger audience but imo they've just made it look less appealing and stylish.

The battle system is where it failed. It was just a flat-out dumb idea which involved such a tiny amount of actual participation from the player, they may as well have just been scripted movies.

Yes, because XIII was soooo western wasn't it? With it's lack of freedom, choices, customisation, and all the emo rubbish. It was a textbook JRPG but without any charm. No good blaming the west for the state of the japanese gaming industry. If they wanted to placate the west they'd have made it freer and more open and cut characters like hope out of it.

Let's see how VSXIII does. If that one sucks as well, then SE should reboot some of their older franchises and give FF a rest for a while (at least a decade).

I thought FFXIII was pretty good. Nowhere near the best FF, nowhere near the worst. I felt it was a nice step up from FFX-2 and FFXII atleast.

It just needs to be nurtured and developed properly now.charizard1605

I completely agree. I am (used to be) a massive FF fan but my interest in the series has been decreasing since FFX. I don't understand how with all the power consoles now have, and RPGs being more open world and customizable than ever...why is the FF seriesw getting more and more linear? this started with FFX and no world map. Then with FF13 they don't even really have dungeons or anything. Everything is straight and narrow until you are almost done the game.

And when this is coming from the company who offered FF tactics, where you could fully customize your character, their abilities, etc AND still have a great story...why are FF titles still sticking you with pre-established characters with pre-established abilities? FF Tactics was originally a PS1 game for crying out loud! And for my money that is still the best FF game ever made.

So I don't understand why SE is so damn confused now. It can't be that hard to make an open world RPG where you are able to customize the character and their ablities. They USED to do it all the time!

"Americanised?" What the, the game's JRPG written all over it. Characters had blue, yellow, PINK (Lightning and Vanille) hair, along with goofy accessories, short skirts, teenage looking characters (snow and Sarah just looks wrong, Pedo--Snow?) and has still some of the traditional traps of JRPG cliche character styles. For me, I think FF XIII wasn't bad, however I want more of the freedom I got from FF XII. Evolve on the Gambit system, give me more than just missions that involve going to spot A and killing beast to complete the "mission." How about a few side quests involving Chocobo racing/raising a la VII or IX? (Loved IX's Chocobo game.) Give me a leveling system that doesn't restrict me, and makes half of the roles useless already through almost the entire game. I'd rather have characters that level up and gain multiple stat boosts, instead of grinding for a few battles just to get ONE state boost. Basically a short rundown. -Improved battle system of FF XII (no Game over when one character dies, this is absurd, and let me control the other two please.) -If not FF XII's system, make FF XIII's system better by letting me control the people, and might as well make it an action game a la Tales honesty, or KH. -Better character customization. -More freedom to do as I please. Yes, I admit it makes sense in FF XIII's story, but frankly it's still saddening to see the game not take ANY breaks from constant battles. The story could have been done better to give it better flow.

They should move back to FFX type battle system, I want me cool summons back!

I thought Summons in FF XIII were cool. The only thing I hated was there was very little use for them during the main game. Though that one part in the story where you battled that boss with Odin was cool...
