As much of a fanboy as jedigemini is, he's probably right. The PS2 succeeded because it was mainstream. Since both the 360 and PS3 are priced as "prestige" consoles, there's only really one option for all those millions and millions PS2 owners who only consider gaming to be a leisure activity.
Do you mean mainstream as in Madden fans, or mainstream as in "I don't know the difference between an X button and a start button"? I don't think the PS2s casual audience necessarily will gravitate to the Wii just because it's marked as a "casual" system and is cheap. Why not just stick with what you have?
The hardcore Madden fans aren't mainstream. Sure, there are a lot of them, but they form a niche group because they keep re-buying Madden over and over again.
"Mainstream" refers to people who play games to relax, not to compete with others or to finish as many games as possible. "Mainstream" players don't get wrapped up in all of the bluster and hype around games.
I'm sure here are many casual Madden fans who pick up the latest game just to have it when friends come over. That's the only reason I used that as an example. Looking at sales, it can't be just the hardcore, compettive Madden players supporting that franchise.
On the second point, if mainstream gamers don't get caught up in the hype around games, why would you think they'd be ready to buy a Wii, or any system? All I'm saying is, at this point, the larger majority of PS2 owners are probably still waiting for they're favorite game, for a price drop, for a tax return or whatever. That migration has not occured yet.
