There were a couple of game companies that wanted us to. Like Bethesda, but I doubt anyone bought the crap with all of the awesome mods made for Oblivion by the community. Who cares about some horse armor when we can download a mod to ride a tiger or a dragon?

Most of the time DLC is free. Back in the day it was called "new content", usually accompanied with a patch. Some companies have tried experimenting with payed new content like Dice/EA with the BF2 booster packs. However this was a massive failure as the only thing it did was break up the community into segments and enrage the fans. That's the only case I can think of right now where new content wasn't free on PC.

When I bought Mass Effect, it says on the box that we get some free content (which I believe is the DLC that 360 owners paid for). Developers know DLC is not a really good idea for PC gamers, because not every PC gamer has a credit card to make the online purchase. With consoles, you can buy pre-paid cards to make all your transactions, while PC gamers don't get that advantage. At least that's my view on it.

the fact is if they charge for it on pc two things will happen: it will be pirated instead and more importantly people will laugh that you have to pay for it and make a mod that is better and free.

Are you getting the FO3 DLC for free too? What about the ME DLC?If this is the case then I'll more than likely stop with consoles and go with PC's for gaming. That's ludicrous that PC gamers get it for free while console versions have to pay $10 more for the game (retail) and then PAY for DLC while other platforms get it for free.

Wait, Bring Down the Sky? That's been free for the PC since last summer. Or was there some other DLC I missed... but yeah, for the most part additional content on the PC is either free or they just skip releasing it on the PC. Either modders can match the content for free (Oblivion), or people can find a way to just take it for free or something.

Fallout 3 DLC is also on PC but i think it's same price as it is on 360.

lolwut? your games are more expensive and lower quality. you have to pay for almost every little piece of content for your game. 99% of content for PC games are free. The rest nobody gets for cus its a rip off and there are better mods for free lol cant even customize consoles, all you can do is put stickers on it

DLC = downloadable content map packs = DLC extra weapons and areas = DLC they are just called updates to PC gamers, but they are DLC, the free kind of DLC.

'DLC' being free is NOT a new phenomenon. In the old days, PC developers would quite often release updates and little extras for their games. Why? 1. Because it builds good relations with the guys that buy their games. 2. Because it keeps their game that they worked so hard on alive. 3. Because they were often PC gamers themselves.

Before, you'd -never- pay for new content, outside of full fledged expansion packs. Now a days, on consoles, it's pretty much every bit of content costing, while PC content is a mix, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I fully expect to start seeing more paid for content on PC though, as developers are struggling more and more to move units on the platform, with the rampant piracy. However, the PC has a phenomenal mod community, and as long as devs include the ability to mod games, there's always going to be excellent free content around.

Well, Both Mass Effect and CoD4 DLC was free. I'm sure others will list more games this gen that had Free DLC.

EDIT: All Valve games get free DLC on PC as well.

Most developers don't mind providing free DLC, its the publishers and console manufacturers that want to make a profit of it.

We have to sometimes but for common practice no, in fact a lot of us (myself included) refuse to pay for content that should have been in a game when it was released. Cutting the end to Fallout 3 and asking us to pay $10 for it is asinine, so is paying $10 for 3-4 new maps. Microsoft tried to milk its customers with Games for Windows Live (you used to have to pay just like Xbox Live), Bethesda tries to milk its customers with "dlc" which $10 for not even an hours of content probally, and EA does this on a regular basis (see sims "expansions" and battlefield "boosters") which for the core market, not casuals, it has failed miserably. If we have mods why would we pay extra for "dlc" if we could just mod it in or get something better for free?

Valve has never charged us for content on pc and they won't start now. On xbox you have to pay thanks to Microsoft.

yes, it is free, but if you think about it, it would be stupid to charge for it because the modding community would just create the same thing within hours for free :P . im new to PC gaming and thats one thing i LOVE is mods!!! I may never go back :lol: *cue evil laugh*

If they refuse to pay for it, then what's the point in offering it to sell it to them?

That said, Oblivion and Fallout 3 have paid DLC on PC - since they already had to pay to produce it for 360, any revenue they get from the PC is free money, so they might as well throw it out there and see if anyone bites.

we got it free but we also got the COD4 and ME DLC late. ME on PC did not come with the DLC at first we had to wait about 2 months for them to release a patch which included it.

So your saying that Console games have never pirated? and Stealing and pirating are 2 different things. And I really don't know what your trying to say anyway. We never had to Pay for DLC in the past so why should we start now?
